There's suddenly a ton of new 4X space strategy games to choose from in 2006. Stardock released Galactic Civilizations II earlier this year and in two week comes Sword of the Stars. However, game developer Malfador Machinations is putting the finishing touches on Space Empires V, the latest game in their own long running space strategy series that's due for release from publisher Strategy First in the next few weeks. FiringSquad got a chance to chat with Malfador Machinations co-founder Aaron Hall (http://www.firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=11601) to find out more about their plans for the game. Here is a snip:
FiringSquad: When you decided to develop Space Empires V, what were the development team's main goals?

Aaron Hall: The main goal for Space Empires V was to take it from a plain looking 2D game to a more modern 3D graphics level. Our work on Starfury created an engine that we could use for the space combat in SE5. Beyond the graphics improvement, we wanted to add more modding capabilities. Modding has taken a great leap forward in SE5, in that you can now use formulas in data fields and the AI is completely scripted.

Gal Civ II was a decent amount of fun but could really use some multi-player action. SEV wasn't even on my radar and this interview hasn't really changed that.

I blame Quicksilver and their butcher job on MOO3.

I still like Galciv 2. Can be very fun and engrossing if you can keep your suspension of disbelief active after seeing how the AI behaves (ie totally nonsensical... they keep trying to tweak it in patches but as far as I'm concerned I think it's performing it's level-best just keeping the rest of the map in motion... forget any attempt to make me think it actually knows what it's doing or why).
