According to an official release (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/11520/BioWare-Licenses-Simutronics-HeroEngine/) on TeamXbox (http://www.teamxbox.com/), Bioware has licensed HeroEngine for their new MMORPG.
"At BioWare we selected HeroEngine because it had the most sophisticated and complete development tools available for building an amazing online experience," said Gordon Walton, Co-Studio Director of BioWare Austin. "Our team wanted a great rapid prototyping environment and to work with experienced MMO developers. The HeroEngine from Simutronics is a perfect fit for BioWare Austin's requirements."
Anyone get a look at the HeroEngine during E3?

When did Bioware open an Austin office?

I am confused, I thought Bioware was using the UE3 engine for their MMO. Maybe Hero Engine isn't a graphics engine?

Damn, a Bioware I'll probably have to pay to play.

I like that Bioware doesnt stick to one engine and looks into other avenues to best suit their content. So far they have only used the UE3 engine for "Mass Effect". Maybe the UE3 engine didnt fit their needs for an MMO design?

They picked up a bunch of SOE Austin people. Mostly old SWG staff.

Possibly. I fondly remember Simutronics for their text based MMORPGs. Dragonrealms was one of the best online games I've ever played to date, and it had no graphics!

Star Wars MMO? Galaxies is about it. :-P
But Bioware just says they want to grab them a billion dollar maker. Who wouldn't. But they've done fantasy just as much as sci-fi. Can't really tell where they are going to go with it, and they have yet to say.

Just what I've been hoping for. :p

Whoa, you old. Must be like over 30 or something. I remember my Pa telling me about "textual adventure games" back in the PC XT days. But I thought he was lyin'. ;)
Ok, seriously now. My favorite adventure games of all time we text based, PlanetFall, a Mind Forever Voyaging, Pyramid, the Zorks ... tons of them ... all great stuff.

I don't think bioware will do another star wars game or another licensed game. Supposedly the owners of bioware were very upset at how good knights of the old republic was and how little money they got. Honestly, for a company like bioware, the licensed world just doesn't make sense. They are to the point where they can make their own IP and not need to share the money with anyone.

"In the latest big-name middleware deal, Simutronics today announced that it has licensed its HeroEngine massively multiplayer online role-playing game tool to BioWare. The program, which can be used by developers for everything from game design to billing players, is at the heart of Simutronics' own Hero's Journey MMO game, set for release in 2007."
I personally doubt the engine includes graphics rendering, but we'll see.

Well it's nice to see them stepping up with the MMO. Now please make it be a Star Wars MMO. Galaxies had a good idea, then they fucked it up. And something to dethrone WoW is a long time coming.

From what I've gathered about the Hero Engine, the goal is to have everything set up so that you can make a full MMO in two years, including design. To do that, the graphics rendering engine probably would need to be included.

I'm sure it'll be better to just replace that as well. U3 engine is behind huxely so it's adaptive enough, and pretty.

Bioware has yet to dissapoint me.
They've done nothing but disappoint me since they decided to focus primarily on shallow console titles.
In a related note, I miss BIS so much it hurts, sniffle. FU, Interplay.

UE3 certainly looks much better than what I've seen of the Hero Engine; I wasn't really expecting much from the screenshots on the Hero's Journey website, but man that game looks bland. Of course, that could very well be attributed to the artists and not the engine, but it isn't comforting.
Not that graphics make the game, but after seeing what Bioware artists can do with UE3...

No that engine is ass... Bioware is making something to rival WoW. Not be the next galaxies...
