View Full Version : AMD NOT Dropping ATI Brand Name

Despite previous reports (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16016), the news that AMD was planning on dropping the ATI brand name is apparently false (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060808-7446.html).
AMD is now responding to the story, saying "AMD has no plans to drop the ATi brand name or ATi's product brands. The ATi name will live on at AMD as our leading consumer brand, and so will the Radeon brand and other ATi product brands. AMD's executive management knows very well the power and value of branding, and ATi's branding is some of the most valued in the global technology industry."I'm glad this turned out to be false. Otherwise I would have questioned the higher-ups at AMD.

I knew I called it right when I said bullshit to my friend this morning.

It just seemed so foolish, why drop an established brand name that already has loyal customers?

Man, i didn't even reply to the other thread because it just sounded so stupid. Sure it's easy to be wise afterwards but damn, it just felt so akward they would just bury such a strong brand.

It would be really nice if AMD would drop the ATI moniker, or really do anything at all to show customers that they plan on reforming this underperformer.

Perhaps management "leaked" the idea of dropping the ATi name, just to see what reaction to it would be.

And have now decided against the idea.

If management decided their strategy based upon the kneejerk reactions of the interweb community, management should be neutered, then fired.
