This is very cool of them to do. Don't think F.E.A.R. multiplayer is very special from what I've heard, but still.

Hey, free is free. I have been curious to see how F.E.A.R. would run on my rig, and this might be a way to do it without shelling out thirty bones or whatever F.E.A.R. is going for now. It would be really nice if some sort of modding community came in behind this.

F.E.A.R. 360 demo is suppossed to be on next OXM disc as well. I've seen someone playing the demo on my friends list.

From what I remember, the F.E.A.R. multiplayer demo was pretty fun. Opening fire down a hallway and creating tons of dust, smoke, and debris was a good time.

fear multiplayer sucks.
it looks pretty, just like the singleplayer game, but it plays like crap.
We're past the day when a title got cool marks for just implementing multiplayer. Nowadays they have to have great netcode, great weapon balance and maps that you don't get sick of by the third round.
Wonder why they're even bothering, some new FEAR spinoff/sequel/port coming down the pipe soon?

2K Games? I thought F.E.A.R was made by Sierra (Vivendi Games)?

So this is the big announcement? It's decent for 0 dollars I suppose, I can't think of any other multi where you scissor kick somebody else.

Boomtown screwed up, it is Sierra.

Meh, I gave F.E.A.R. multiplayer 2 hours of my life and that was enough. Mediocre is the word we are looking for.

It is, the www.joinfear.com website says nothing of 2k Games and the press release on that site says Sierra. Boomtown just messed up. Someone should change the news post to reflect this.

F.E.A.R. was a very over rated game in my opinion. It was okay, but no where near the popular opinion it seemed to have gathered. To me the weapons just felt sluggish.

That's because they were. They used animation keys to fire the weapons, and this results in a noticable lag between when you click fire and when the weapon fires. I had the same complaint.

Yep I got the credit on the story wrong. The PR guy I know here in the UK recently moved from 2K Games to Vivendi and popped up in my email as 2K. So writing the story in a hurry...blah...blah... :o

The weapons feel so sexy in that game...it's great for a LAN, not for online. I'd like making small maps for it like I did in the old Q3A days.

My buddy has been trying to get me to buy it, and I almost did. Not doing so now.
The F.E.A.R single player was bloody excellant, I enjoyed every last minute except for the slightly dodgy "youve crashed in the middle of a derelict area" filler level. It was well paced with a fantastic story, solid mechanics, fantastic graphics and weapons that suited it rather than ridiculous garage sized shotguns.
The multiplayer....crappy maps basically. It's all narrow corridors and blind corners that just lead to player dominance based on who knows that slightly hidden corridor that puts you behind everybody.
Free is nice but if Sierra wanted to impress releasing the multiplayer wasn't the way to go.

FUCK YEAH, BITCHES
Bow down to the greatest FPS game released in the last 5 years, and now the most generous as well. I expect all of you to download this post haste and report online to get your faces kicked in (literally.)

They should definitely do this on the X360 as well. I've been thinking recently that single player centric FPS games (HL2, FEAR, DOOM, etc.) would probably do very well by releasing their multiplay portion as a free download.

The beta multiplayer demo seemed pretty solid, though the performance was pretty iffy (thankfully I've upgraded since then). I'm looking forward to giving this a go. It might not be the deepest strategic online FPS around, but sometimes solid deathmatch is all I need...

greatest? I can think of 4 in the last 5 years that I rank higher... and I'm not even trying very hard.

neither of which would change the fact that I can think of 4 FPS in the last 5 years that are better than FEAR.

I'm not half as hardcore into F.E.A.R. as Draft, but I did enjoy it a lot. So I guess what I'm saying is, spill the beans already. :)

This is good news. My friends and I had a good time playing FEAR CTF on the lan back in the beta days. I might still play this occasinally but there just werent that many servers running this online. Most of them weren't even using the Slo-Mo modes which I thought were lots of fun. Hopefully this free release will lend itself to at least a short burst of Multi-FEAR popularity.
