Over at IGN they have posted (http://wii.ign.com/articles/723/723894p1.html) some rumors from "inside contacts." While most of it has been rumored before, there's one interesting new tidbit:
Nintendo has allegedly bumped production of Wii hardware to more than five million units by the end of the year, a significant upgrade to previous numbers. The jump is purportedly based on the positive reaction to Wii from press and industry analysts at E3 2006.
Less shortages are always a good thing. The article also talks about two colors on release, black and white.

Here's to hoping there is a racially insensitive advertising campaign (http://www.joystiq.com/media/2006/07/sony_whiteiscoming_ad_large.jpg) to back it!

Now tell us how much it will be and when it will be out so I can reserve mine.

If this is true, and they can really make that many more units before the end of the year, they will have a significant advantage over Sony's estimated (and generally considered overly optimistic) system availability numbers.

I hope there's more colors avalable at launch. Not that it would keep me from buying what looks like the most fun console this generation, but it would be nice to be able to get it in OSHA Orange or Kawasaki Green. :D

For someone like me shortages are never a good thing. If I am going to buy something that costs more than a hundred bucks then I am going to do my research and make sure I am making a smart decision. If I decide to buy, and it turns out I can't find the item I want anywhere (this almost happened to me with the DS Lite, I finally found one at the last place I looked), then I am much more likely to say forget it and put off buying it till way later. Soooo....as someone who plans on buying a Wii, less shortages = happy me. I am kind of surprised too....I normally always buy appliances and electronics in black, I just like the way it looks, but for the Wii I think white looks pretty damn snazzy.

Does it mean I'm juvenile when the news post title makes me chuckle? For some reason the Wii jokes never get old, even after I've gotten used to the name O.o.

Well, the title of thist thread could also double as some type of advertised feature for a gay interactive porn game if that is what you are referring to...

Hey, I had the choice between the two (black and purple) and I chose the purple. IT at least looked more interesting. But later I traded in and bought back my Cube, so I now have the platinum one (the one that came with the Mario Kart bundle).

That's cool....purple's not my thing, but at least you had the choice
I never could make up my mind about the platinum cube though....it looks shiny and eye-catching, but then again it looks like a cheap spray-paint job
now the shiny metal japanese one that played dvds.....mmmmmmmmm, sexy

Price... announce the PRICE already. Eesh.
Then if they're feeling crazy, maybe they'll actually give us a date?

I have to wonder if they're not announcing the price or release date so that retailers get mobbed on/near launch day and it creates a media explosion. Good publicity.
Even with a ton of pre-orders, Xbox 360's launch (the long lines) generated a lot of interest. It's all about publicity.
What's more exciting?
A. "2 million people leisurely walked into their local retailer to pick up their pre-ordered Wii this morning." (2 million would be unbelievable, I know)
or
B. "STORES WERE JAMMED AS WII-HUNGRY GAMERS FLOCKED TO BE THE FIRST ON THEIR BLOCK TO OWN NINTENDO'S BRAND NEW SYSTEM."
No pre-orders = insanity. I would love to be part of that. :)

To put this in perspective, I recall Microsoft having difficulties reaching 1 million! I believe it was originally a million, then half a million, then 20% of that number were core, so it was drastically lower than the 5 million Nintendo is pushing for. Even if Nintendo misses it should do significantly better at keeping stocks replenished than Microsoft.
Another positive indicator is that I was able to get a DS within a week and a half of launch, and that was after a very large demand at launch, so hopefully Nintendo can continue this tradition of meeting supply with the Wii.

Damn, I was hoping for more color choices at launch. Come on Nintendo - cut the black and white crap and bring back the glory days of rainbow colors - the N64!! Hell Japan got an orange Gamecube. I would have loved to get that.
I may actually hold off until that wicked Lime green one hits - provided it actually does get released and not TOO long after launch.

If Nintendo can manage to make and sell that many Wii before the end of the year, they will have a damned good shot at being the first console to 10 million units.

Probably they can make that amount without a problem remember that Wii hardware is very similar to the GameCube, it seems that they have some kind of advantage using almost the same hardware as the GameCube atleast thats a good thing in some ways.

In Japan Nintendo released a very nice white Gamecube as part of a Crystal Chronicles promotion. Bastards.
