North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, 69, has died: (http://news.yahoo.com/north-korean-leader-kim-jong-il-69-died-030848603.html)
Kim Jong Il, North Korea's mercurial and enigmatic leader, has died. He was 69.
Kim's death was announced Monday by state television from the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.
Kim is believed to have suffered a stroke in 2008 but appeared relatively vigorous in photos and video from recent trips to China and Russia and in numerous trips around the country carefully documented by state media.
The leader, reputed to have had a taste for cigars, cognac and gourmet cuisine, was believed to have had diabetes and heart disease.
The news came as North Korea prepared for a hereditary succession. Kim Jong Il inherited power after his father, revered North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, died in 1994.
In September 2010, Kim Jong Il unveiled his third son, the twenty-something Kim Jong Un, as his successor, putting him in high-ranking posts.
Asian stock markets moved lower amid the news, which raises the possibility of increased instability on the divided Korean peninsula.

Well, at least one terrible person is dead. Still a net gain for humanity.

Last I read, his son is much worse. More people will suffer under him than under his father.

If true, that really is too bad. I feel sorry for the people of NK.

More than all?
From that documentary on life in North Korea under Kim Jong Il it seemed like life there was already about as hellish as it could get, complete with concentration camps.

His father was pretty much the only thing left saving us from his son.

Interesting that he picked his youngest son as his successor. News indicated that SK is watching their boarders and have been in contact with US govt.

Not really that interesting. Look into his older son, he was, iirc, considered too westernized, loved money, women, and a fast lifestyle. Wasn't particularly ideological. He might've even been considered pro-western thereby.

Tim Tebow rejoices in losing because when he loses, God makes it up to him by killing a ruthless dictator.

Considering we have a couple of Air Force bases in SK, I'd say its safe to say that yes, they have been in "contact" with the US.

Interesting to me because I know nothing about the late kim jong il or his family. The documentary mentioned earlier has been in my netflix queue for a while but I never got a chance to watch it. I plan to watch it this week.

Even his own people have to be paid (in food) to care that he has died. The problem is that in tightly controlled dictatorships, transitions in power can often be accompanied by saber rattling to consolidate control and focus the population on external threats rather than internal chaos. The last time North Korea rattled its saber, it shelled a South Korean civilian population. Hopefully, their new "Dear Leader" will be content with assuming power and not require ritual bombing sacrifices to prove his control.

I don't care what his declared title is. He's the "Midget Successor" to the "Man who Starved His People," grandson of the "Guy who was a Stooge of the Soviets." They're all from the "Family of Grade-A Buttheads."

Here's an eyewitness account of Il's crimes by a former teacher of his who lived in NK and escaped, only to have his entire family murdered for his defection:
