1Up brings us this piece of "news" which is more than a little bit suspect. According to Nintendo fansite Nintendogossip (http://www.nintendogossip.com) an anonymous e-mailer has tipped them off to a possible new feature headed to certain DS games near you. From the 1Up article (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3152687):

The scribe, who chose to remain nameless, claims that "certain developers have received a new accessory from Nintendo. This accessory for the Nintendo DS goes in the GBA cartridge... Inside this cartridge is a gyro-sensor... The sensor registers movements the same way the cartridge did in Wario Ware: Twisted." The author goes on to say that one of the first games that will use this gyro-sensor is Tony Hawk Downhill Jam for the DS, forcing you to tilt the DS to guide your skater down the hill. The letter concludes by saying that Nintendo will show off said motion-sensor at the Leipzig Games Convention.

While this is obviously far from confirmed, it's another possible cool thing to be shown off at the Leipzig convention. So my question: was the motion sensor capability in GBA games like WarioWare: Twisted... fun? It seems like it could be more annoying than enjoyable.

WarioWare twisted was fantastic, easily the best in the series, and the motion-sensor added a whole lot of fun to the mechanics of the game.

The yoshi game (I forget the name) used the motion-sensor in such a basic way, it added very little to the game, other than a silly novelty.

This might add an interesting new depth to the DS.

So basically (as is obvious now that I think about it for half a second), it's going to come down to whether or not the devs implement it in a way that's actually interesting. For some reason, I'm not holding out a ton of hope for Tony Hawk Downhill Jam. Call me crazy...

Maybe not in Tony Hawk, but the use of it in WarioWare: Twisted was fantastic. I agree with VoxProminence completely -- easily my favorite game in the WarioWare series. The trouble is, this is like any aftermarket add-ons to consoles -- if it isn't in the original package, developers won't make games for it. It was easier with GameBoy carts -- you just built the gyro or lightsensor or whatever into the thing. But with DS cards, you'll have to have a seperate GBA slot add-on. Which, I think, was clearly Nintendo's idea behind putting GBA cart holders in DS cases.

At any rate, I think it could be cool. I look forward to seeing what Nintendo does with it.

WarioWare: Twisted does indeed kick ass. Mind you, I played it on the DS and spinning the whole thing around was somewhat of an issue with how awkward it is being twice the size of a GBA opened up.

Hey, I've got more hope for Downhill Jam than I do the latest iteration of the regular Tony Hawk series...

Twisted was great. Driving a car in that game is what actually sold me on the idea for the Wii.

From the video I saw of Downhill Jam on the Wii, the DS could use a similar control scheme to tilt the skater in an intuitive way.

Echoing the others, let me also say that WarioWare: Twisted! was an wonderfully fun title. And the most amazing achievement of that game to me is, at the same time it's fun for me, my 3 year old nephew is successfully playing and enjoying the game (he's actually quite good at the game, and passed the first stage the day he got it). THAT is definitely a first in my experience, and a sign that Nintendo is light years ahead of any other mainstream company when it comes to developing intuitive control schemes.

Oh, and for the record, WW:T! plays best on an original GBA with an Afterburner kit installed. The only reason I ever even put Twisted in my DS's GBA slot was to unlock the special Mona Pizza Video toy. (Yes, I'm completely aware of how sad that is for an adult. :) )

Actually, I'd make the arguement that it plays best on the Gameboy Micro.
Works awesome with mine.

One more praise for WW:T. On top of the excelent use of the motion sensor, the cart had rumble too. It was just a subtle click that you felt but it let you know when you were turning it and approximate how far it had registered. It really just felt right. Im looking forward to seeing this for the DS. Also I imagine that the Wii-mote will use its rumble pack to similar effect. It might not be used so much for intense "vibrate-its-way-off-the-coffee-table" but more for that subtle feedback you need when manipulating a virtual object.

That's not sad at all because Mona Pizza is an awesome song. :P
