FiringSquad chats with Relic's Jonny Ebbert as gives us more info on Warhammer 40,000 Dawn Of War: Dark Crusade, the upcoming second expansion pack for their hit RTS game. You can check out the interview right here (http://www.firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=11579). Here is a snip:
FiringSquad: First, it's rare that a game gets a second expansion pack. How did the idea for Dark Crusade come about?

Jonny Ebbert: Fan after fan has told us how happy they were to see their favorite units rampaging around the battlefield. It’s one thing to paint a Dreadnought model and set it on a table; it’s another thing entirely to watch a Dreadnought stomp across the battlefield and literally tear enemies in half.

Players really loved seeing their table-top armies come to life in Dawn of War. So when we sat down to plan out the next Dawn of War product, we asked ourselves: What do the fans really want? More races seemed to be the obvious answer.

Ebbert is pretty reserved in this. He hasnt even pointed out the fact that DoW is the best RTS ever made yet.

I thought this series looked pretty cool when I first saw it, and the more I looked into it, the more I wanted it. Oddly enough I bought it about a year ago and haven't even installed it...also got the expansion pretty cheap and obviously haven't installed that either.

Not sure why I haven't mustered up the desire to install it, though to be fair I do buy a lot of games and dvd's that I play very little or not at all, but it's rare I'll buy an expansion pack for it if I don't play it at all...

I guess I'm usually pretty crappy at rts games and am worried I'll just get frustrated, but I do want to get into this eventually...lately the only games I ever finish are fps and third person shooters, with the occasional rpg thrown in...

Me and a bud were argueing if DoW would get a second expansion, when we first got WA.

I said no. I've never been more happy to be proven wrong.

It's a cool game, but I found the the units really lacked depth and that was an uninspiring mechanic. New units mostly just are the same thing as the ones the obsoleted without really adding new dynamics to the combat. One thing shoots, then something that replaces just shoots harder and takes more damage.

Unfortunately, the game is top quality in every other department. I'm playing Company of Heroes Beta and you can really see the next level that relic took the mechanics they added in DoW and it's pretty exciting.

Are we playing the same game? I'll have to confess here and say my preferred faction is the Space Marines and this just isn't true at all for them, but I have played all the races at least to some extent and don't think it's true for any of them, either. I can't think of any units that get replaced by others... much less others that simply shoot harder and take more damage.

Unfortunately, the game is top quality in every other department.
Uh, yeah, that is a bummer, isn't it...?

Looking forward to that game very much! :D

I need this. I've wanted a kick ass RTS for a while, and when I heard Tau were going to be in it, it sealed the deal.

Very excited about this. However, does anyone know if Winter Assault will be required? Ive been wanting to buy WA for some time now, but I realized the second expansion might include WA, kind of like how Civ3 Conquests came with Play The World.

If anyone has heard anything about this, let me know!

Winter Assault will only be required if you want to play the game as the Imperial Guards faction. Although, the files for them will be on your computer. Apparently, you'll be able to play against the IG in multiplayer, but not as them. At least, that's the way it is supposed to work if everything holds until launch. I'm happy also that they have confirmed this expansion will *finally* add support for widescreen monitors. Yay, no more res. hacks!
