This Sunday’s Washington Post had a full page article in the Arts section about Nintendo’s main man, Mario. It is always interesting to see what the mainstream media makes of video games and their characters, especially in this day and age of vilifying video games as a form of moral corruption and ‘murder simulators’.
Here’s a selection of quotes from the article. For the full article, click here (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/04/AR2006080400224.html) (free registration required).
"Mario never gets old, kind of like James Bond," says Michael Pachter, a game analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities. "And who doesn't think James Bond is cool?"
Twenty-five years after his debut, Mario is the angelic, lovable, all-too-recognizable face of the best-selling video game franchise ever, racking up sales of nearly $2.3 billion in the United States -- and that's only since 1995, as far back as NPD data go. There are currently more than 50 Mario-related games in the market. And the best ones attract tweens who are old enough to appreciate the games' complexity and beauty -- pipes that lead to secret mazes! Mushrooms that double your size! -- but young enough to want to have pure, easy, harmless fun. Who wouldn't want to break a brick by bopping it with your head?

1. James Bond hasn't been cool in at least 15 years.
2. "Who wouldn't want to break a brick by bopping it with your head?" Somebody get Jack Thompson on the line.

Huh, I guess he is. I always figured he was bashing them with that big melon of his, but I suppose it makes slightly more sense that he's busting bricks open with his fist.

2. "Who wouldn't want to break a brick by bopping it with your head?"
A common misconception. He always punches the bricks.
Edit: Oops, guess this has already been sufficiently covered.

Go figure. A respectible write up about a family-friendly character quickly devolves when exposed to Evil Avatar. Now the thread is about how often Peach gets nekkid.

Kamalot, we can't help how hot Peach is, or how great she is with Zelda in that quick pencil I have.
