View Full Version : Dead Rising Reviews

GameBrink (http://www.gamebrink.com/) is the first to weigh in (http://www.gamebrink.com/xbox-360/1697-Dead_Rising-reviews.html) on Dead Rising giving it an 84.

Dead Rising comes so close to greatness it hurts. Smashing zombies with a huge variety of skills and weapons scattered throughout a seamlessly never-ending mall is always a lot of fun but the case game structure and RPG like leveling system sadly feel out of place. Kudos to the devs at Capcom for breaking out of the mold of standard videogame structure, but while playing through Dead Rising I couldnt help but wish that the mashing was more open ended.

Team XBox (http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1203/Dead-Rising/p1/) also has their review up scoring it an 8.7. (Thanks Rirath)

A lot of what's said here is what I've expected, as is the score. Thankfully, the game's still everything I'm looking for right now, and I can't wait for it to come out.

Gotta say though, I generally like Gamebrink, but that review is just full of simple grammar mistakes. Is there an editor in the house?

That review sounded like what I expected. It would be a little more fun to just run around doing what you want to all the time instead of timed missions. Still, I love it when they get leveling into my action games.

I just pre-ordered. $75. Jesus.

Also, I just saw the TV ad. Notable is how they managed to show in-game action with ZERO, that's right ZERO bloodshed. There is no blood at all. They show a soccer ball shot, an umbrella shot, and the main char shoving through a crowd of zombies. Not one smash or slash at all.

Amazing.

I'd be excited about Dead Rising but I generally can't stand time limits and escort missions.

Got a bit better score than I was anticipating. The actual review sounds about what I expected. Save system doesn't sound that bad. At least you get to keep your PP and get to retry the level. I like that. Anyway, I'm getting this day 1 (or 2, depending on work). I like killing zmobies.

I heard from following the developement of the game that the whole forced time limit thing was added rather late , most previewers said they were disapointed at its addition as it seemed to put a damper on the free-roaming aspect of the game. hopefuly Capcom has a few cool unlockable modes like killing spree or free roam modes, I know they are already planing XBL content.

I dunno, I feel like I learned little to nothing from this review, other than that it's going to be fun. (?) Even if he gave it a 70, I'd probably still pick it up because so little of the game seems to be talked about.

There is a free-roam mode after you beat the game. Looks like most reviewers didn't beat it because they all complain about the lack of free exploring.

Not saying that this was Capcoms reasoning, but the blood inside a dead/undead body would have coagulated, so tehnically there shouldn't be bloodshed.

As for the game, me wantee.

Yeah, the only thing that seems like a downside to me is having to be somewhere at a specific point in time in the game, and the possibility of the escort missions being the traditional entering a murder-suicide pact with the AI you're protecting.

Oh well, I'll enjoy it anyway. I'm curious, though, if there are a stable number of zombies or if they will respawn endlessly, no matter what mode you play in.

"....the texturing suffered quite a bit. "

Huh. The textures are what attracted me to this game, I think they look friggin awesome.
This game looks great, I played the demo at work today and now I'm planning on getting a 360 just for it, and I'm a total pc fanboy who hates consoles.
Damn you capcom, your've ruined me!

Why is it this review mentions nothing that can't be found in the demo? They don't mention the outside areas, they don't mention the vehicles, they don't even mention the Unlimited and Survivor modes. It sounds like they're faulting the game for actually being a game, and not a sandbox.

It's not quite certain what the difference is, but my understanding is that Survivor is the Xbox Live ranked mode where food and weapons do not respond, and you see how long you can survive. Unlimited mode is an unlock after getting the 'perfect ending' that lets you tell the helicopter to come back, giving you more time to play.

I'm not sure this guy understands the game mechanics. The "harmless" items change the PP type of the zombies, and there may be a book that makes them more useful. Also, books do not give you new abilties when you read them, they only work when you have them in your inventory.

There is also a review up by Team Xbox:
http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1203/Dead-Rising/p1/

That withstanding the biggest problem we had with Dead Rising was the loading times. For whatever reason each section of the mall requires a reasonably lengthy loading period, making the mall feel less like one cohesive unit, and more like an area situated into different levels. It would have been a much more enjoyable play experience if you weren’t constantly waiting for new areas to load up.

I feel both vindicated and slightly disappointed, but oh well.

I must be odd. I don't mind the timed thing on a game that's supposed to be taking place over only 72 hours. It would likely feel a bit odd if you could just blow off for 65 hours and then suddenly do every case at once.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned though, is if you miss a case, if you automatically game over, or if it just stops giving you cases? If it just stops giving you cases, then hell, Sandbox it for awhile, get to your 72 and start a new game + (If there is one) Or heck, play once or twice without worrying about the big plot.

Besides, Survivor mode is still in, so we DO get the sandbox, just as an unlockable.

Uh, if a feature that adds something to the game is unlockable only later when the game has already been completed, it's perfectly reasonable to complain about the lack of it seeing as you were forced to play through the entire game without it. Stop bitching about reviews and throwing around accusations just because they didn't praise your favorite game enough for crying out loud.

This is one game where the demo absolutely sold me on the full version. Hell for 15 minute demo, I've played this one to death. I've found every weapon in the demo, been to every store, taken pictures, found pp stickers, tried on outfits, gone riding on a skateboard, plowed through dozens of zombies with a shopping cart, bowled, golfed, and (most importantly) shotguned my way through scores of zombies. Hell, I restart the demo just to get my shotgun back and blow the crap out of zombies:) I look forward to unlocking the longer play modes and just running around aimlessly.

From what I gathered in the demo, there are lots of these stickers in the game. If you go into camera mode, zoom in on the sticker and get it to 100% (look at the % counter at the bottom) you will get 1000 PP for that sticker. Some that I have found: Upstairs jewelry store has a green vase in the middle and on the back side of it is a small white pp sticker. There is also one on the Jill's Sandwiches sign and on the cutout of the girl in a bikini top at one of the music stores. There are several others but I'll leave you to hunt those down :)

The smashing zombies thing got old pretty quick.
It really did feel just like State of Emergency 2: Zombie Attack!
Granted, more weapons... but they get old pretty quick.

it didn't help that when i played the demo, I apparently went the 'wrong' way twice, making both sessions last less than a minute. not a great first impression.

loading - movie - loading - hey, whats to the left?

loading - movie - loading - thanks for playing!

Agreed, plus people are going to start doubting the hype before too long, and that could lead to being disapointed at launch. However, a pre-emptive demo release of some carefuly selected awesomeness would be able to help spread that all important word of mouth buzz, which is how I think Dead Rising will become a sleeper, people are just gunna start tellin thier buddies. The first (and there by the second couldn't have been without it) Halo wasn't a success because of a billion dollar ad campaign, it was spreading the gospell.

I've been wondering, in the free roam mode do you still get to complete all the side missions and level up your character? For some reason in just about every game I play I feel the need to complete everything in a single play through.

Same. I have given up waiting for the PS3, I know at this point I do not want to spend six hundred bucks on the thing, and honestly, it's not going to be any better then the 360, I have no idea what exclusives are going to hit it, Gran Turismo obviously, but hopefully Forza 2 can take over there. I bought my Xbox late, only had it about two years now, but it was a much superior system then the PS2 in my opinion.

Dead Rising looks like an absolute blast, but I am having a hard time justifying a console purchase, one that will still set me back $500 after a game or two and an extra controller, ect.

I think I'll just start putting fifty bucks aside a week, I still need to pay off this computer yet anyway.

I hear ya man, but I chose last year when the price for the CCCLX was announced to start saving up my tiny paychecks for one. Its an investment, but it's been worth it, I can honestly say the 360 is the best console I've ever owned, even over the mighty dreamcast. It takes alot of the great ideas and engery for gaming that the DC had, adds its own awesome online and delivers big in the gaming department.

That is my idea at this point. I only owe a few hundred on this computer yet, and really, it is the only bill I have to pay outside of necessities.. such as food, a roof, and gasoline.

I was very close to going out and buying one this weekend though, but then I started looking at game prices, and not much that excites me has really dropped. Ghost Recon, used even, is still $55. I kind of want to wait until I can throw down for the system, and get a handful of games for another hundred.

I've waited this long, I'm sure I can wait some more.

EA editors: For the sake of my eyes, I'd appreciate it if you didn't allow links to GameBrink in news posts anymore. The review was so horrific, I am sure they farm out their writing to 3rd-grade classes. Or perhaps they only write while drunk, and refuse to use a spell/grammar-checker for religious reasons.

Might I suggest a guideline? Unless there is no relevant news for the day, and I'll be so liberal as to include "Paris Hilton having sex" as news, don't link to them. They just want friends, like the dirty kid on the playground that gets beaten by his father every night. Just because you feel sorry for them doesn't mean you want to go there.

What is it that everyone "really" sees in this game? Don't get me wrong, I pre-ordered it and I can't wait for it to get here.

I am just wondering why everyone is so extremely enthralled with this game. Is it the fact that everyone else thinks it's super-rad? Maybe it's Capcom-love. Or does everybody really have personal reasons for getting this other than the fact that you get to bash on zombies. That novelty will surely run thin quickly. And with what little experience we all have with the game it's hard to tell what else is in store for us.

Just curious.

Welcome to EA, hope you stick around. My opinion? I think what most people love is the idea of using practically anything in this whole giant mall as a weapon against zombie hordes. It's jut a cool, fun idea, and it sounds like they pulled it off fairly well.

Ok.... tell why the diffrence in scores...

GameSpot: "Dead Rising's gory, ridiculous, and entertaining action, coupled with its real-time structure and campy stylistic touches, make it one of the most unique games currently available for the Xbox 360. " Score: 8.4

This was for the jack of all trades, master of none : GTA San Andreas " With its strong story, well-written dialogue, terrific voice cast, impressive graphics, great in-game sound, and extremely entertaining and varied gameplay, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a stupendous thrill ride that shouldn't be missed." 9.6

someone tell me why GTA is loved so much by the game reviewing community... so much of the game is composed of many mini-games, with shotty controls and blocky graphics.

This is just a guess here, but I'm guessing it's because GTA is a better game, especially in the opinion of the editor at Gamespot who reviewed GTA:SA as compared to the opinion of the editor at Gamespot who reviewed Dead Rising. Personally, I wouldn't go so far as to say "much" of GTA:SA is mini-games.

I would. if you defined mini game as anything other then running around smashing people in the face with things and stealing thier cars. Which I guess isn't a very good definition.

GTA would be great if 1) the driving controls were better 2) the combat didn't suck because the AI is dumber then a sack of hammers. it has a higher score then Oblivion for cheeses sake. Dead Rising I can see, but Das Elder Scrolls? Ock, Nien.

Its like Game Informer saying "Kefka isn't Sepharoth, but he sure is scarey!"

Yeah, Kefka is a Psychotic clown bent on blowing the world up... Sephy is a girly boi with a huge Penisword and a unhealthy fixation on his mother.

Driving's not amazing on GTA, but I don't think it's bad either. I agree about the combat, too, but not really because of the AI. More just that the controls for aiming/fighting need to be tightened immensely.

The Kefka thing was obviously going right for the heart for me, huh? :p

Its a personal crusade of mine really, I don't have anything against FF VII per say.. it just happens to be the darling of alot of PS3 fanbois (like a dude who came in today saying he loves sony forever because they brought FF VII into his life.) VII is when the series jumped the shark in my opinion. Im glad to see that the classic Kefka laden FF is coming out on GBA this year. Kefka, the true love child of Stephen King's IT and the burger king.

And as a side note, I love the Edit button.

Keep in mind the major diversion from the Dawn of the Dead/George A Romero style zombie and the Capcom style is that a Zombie bite isn't fatal to the main character and doesn't result in zombification.

Now, when you say you wish the "driving controls were better", are you talking about GTA:SA, and if you are, do you have Carl's (or whatever his name was) driving skill maxed out? Theres a pretty good difference in the handling of the cars once you level his driving skill up.

Hehe...

You've noticed the staggering amount of zombies on screen and/or attacking at once, right, Kef?

I'm very impressed. 65 bucks (CA tax) will be well spent, I think. Although, the demo is just fine, for now. I'll wait 'til I hear everyone's reviews. Same with Saint's Row. Fry's tempts me, but I have just as much fun in the demo as I think I might in the whole game, unless someone tells me otherwise.

I'm pretty sure both are worthy of a buy... at least, Dead Rising.

It looks like fun, but my biggest concern is if the thrill of bashing zombies with various and sundry things will last for very long or if it will simply be fun for a few minutes and then grow old. Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is a good example of a game that is great at first but grows old very, very quickly.

Oh wow, that shot was awesome - even if it did destroy page 2.

Are there really that many enemies coming at you at once?
