Strategy Informer (http://www.strategyinformer.com/) has posted up 30 new screenshots for Sonic the Hedgehog which is set to be released on the Xbox360 and Playstation 3. These screenshots are high quality and they do bring back some grand memorys, for me anyway.

Third bitchy post of the morning: I hate Silver, and I hate Shadow. For that reason alone, I won't be buying this game. Shadow is trying way too hard to be bad-ass (he gets a friggin Warthog in this game), and Silver is just... wrong. I dunno how to phrase it, but they both seem represent the polar opposite ends of the Emo Spectrum.

Give me back Knuckles and Tails, and I might consider buying another game in this franchise.

Looks terrible. Sure this isn't the Wii version?

Man Sonic has not really transitioned into 3D game thats fun. :(

memorys

I hope Sonic dies in this game and returns to 2D heaven. While he's up there, dancing with Cream, the camera cuts back to the 3D world where Shadow, who killed him with his Uzi, gets eaten alive by Tails and Knuckles.

See here (http://www.xboxyde.com/news_3273_en.html) for the pics with fewer compression artifacts.

One thing that I find very interesting is that Sonic himself is anti-aliased, while the environments are not.
It seems like the "free" anti-aliasing in the 360 is probably not free, and they're using AA selectively to push up the frame rate. Smart idea though.

Is this gonna work in 3D? I mean, to me the best part of the games was the 2D speed, and I don't think you can keep that speed up in 3D.

The first Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast was a very enjoyable game, proving that Sonic can be done well in 3D. Their efforts after that, however, have been pretty underwhelming.

I'm mostly worried about the camera, which I've heard had problems as of E3. As long as that's sorted out, I'd be interested in this. In fact, if Sega drops an Xbox Live demo that proves just how good this game is, I'm sold.

Dear lord, this looks bad. Is this supposed to be next-gen?

Sonic and co. look alright, but the rest gives off a resounding "meh". Also, keep in mind that these screenshots don't really show off how the game will play - the camera being stuck behind the characters all the time, making for a far less exciting ride.

I don't believe the backgrounds are going to matter, considering the speed you travel around and the camera effects that are used. Seeing it in motion, it looks good.

While it did play decent, I must admit playing the game with the remaing charchters going through the same level with no mix up in design totally ruined the Dreamcast game for me, plus those stupid little blue blob baby things...ugghh just thinking of them makes me want to hurl :o

Man, EvAv is full of graphics whores, eh? :p
At least wait until you see the game in action until you say it looks like ass. Keep in mind that Sonic games are some of the fastest around... all these "horrible textures" will be flying past you so fast that you'll barely have time to look at them anyway. Couple that with on screen blurr and whatnot...
Now why bother putting tons of details into textures you're not going to see when actually playing the game? Unless you guys aren't into actually playing your games, and rather just boot it up... stand there... and bitch about how bad the textures look.

Devs aren't going to waste time on bumping texture quality when it's not going to make the game look any better and will just serve to make it run worse.

That said, I'm sure this game will suck. That's hard for me to say because I love Sonic and Sega, but he hasn't had a good game in a long time. Plus, after the Shadow game, I never want to see that character again.

Yeah, that does look quite poor, for a next gen game the non-character textures look extremely bland and flat (bump maps, hello?, where are you?).

Whoever said that they should bring back Knuckles and Tails is 100% correct, i haven't played a single Sonic game (not including dissapointing demo's on the last gen of consoles) since the Mega Drive, Knuckles and Tails are the true sidekicks of Sonic, they should get rid of these wannabee 'cool' and 'grittier' characters like Shadow.

Why dont they just make another side scrolling 2D version of Sonic, but with updated 3D backgrounds etc, that would be much better imo.

You need bump mapping on things that will be going by you at 200mph? I'm glad you're not the one designing this game.

You should try Sonic Rush.

Inevitable Winter let me borrow his copy. I'm totally digging it. They really captured the speed of the first few sonic titles.

See I think Sonics problems lie partly with the power of nostalgia.

If you've still got you Megadrive/Genesis, play the first Sonic again. It's fast but it isn't THAT fast. Sonic 2 admitedly ramps it up a good bit. It's fun is actually in managing an unusual ammount of speed with platforming which is still technical enough to provide positive challenge. Where the 3D games go wrong is in making these super fast rollercoasters without all that much interaction. Maybe this game will sort that, who knows.

On the graphics side, look at Sonic Heroes. It looks like ass stood still! However, as you speed along the gameplay, whilst not the best the character has ever been featured in mean that it looks more than fine. I think the game will look pretty fantastic in motion although I would like to see the PS3 version.

I thought it was the Dreamcast version that taught us that 3D doesn't work with Sonic.

The game looked pretty sharp in motion when I played it at E3. It's the vibrant colours.. or maybe they just had the colour saturation cranked on the TVs. Either way, clipping along at 60fps, it looked nice, though I detest the Sonic Heroes-style exaggerated animations they put on Sonic. SA1 remains the most all around well done 3D Sonic game... which may not be saying much.

As I've told TrackZero though, the camera was terrible. Not improved at all from previous 3D Sonics, and Silver's camera (remember, Silver moves slowly [walking speed] and is practically a walking gravity gun, that's his gameplay) is the same as Sonic - meaning that he's mostly locked into one view. It doesn't work at ALL since you need to swivel the camera around to see enemies, and the camera simply doesn't.

From what I played at E3, this game will not be any different than any other 3D Sonic game. I enjoyed Sonic's levels in both Adventure 1 and Adventure 2, but Heroes and Shadow were garbage, so I don't hold out much hope for this one either.

I read a preview for this game a few weeks ago. It started off with some of the developers saying that they were going back to the roots of the series by getting rid of the side levels that made Sonic Adventure 2 onward such a bore. I thought this sounded great. Then they proceeded to go on and on about playing as Shadow and Silver. WTF?

I have no interested in this title - Sonic as a character has some promise, but SEGA has managed to fuck up Sonic games for so long now that I fail to see why ANYONE would look forward to this. :(

I really liked the Sonic stages in Sonic Adventure 2, and that is what Sonic felt like at the E3 demo. The Silver stage sucked to high hell though. I wish they would just stick to Sonic and fuck off with the additional characters.

This was pretty much exactly what I was going to say. As someone else mentioned, I'd rather have Sonic by himself than Sonic with Shadow and Silver.

The only sonic games I've liked since sonic and knuckles are the gba ones.

Because conventional wisdom says 2D gaming is dead.

That's why New Super Mario Bros. has sold over a million copies in a few months.

That's what the GBA titles are, and most recently DS title is. Did you miss that? I'm a huge Sonic fan, and love the Adventure series on DC. Can't wait for this one. I'm surprised this is getting do much crap. Yeah, I don't care for Shadow and those other random characters, but sonic's main game is fun as hell, and has always been.

Sonic rush was good, but not quite right. It just felt a bit off.
It was just lots of running, then a fight room, then running, then a fight room etc. Although there were a few bad guys placed randomly around the levels.
The game got more frustrating as it went along aswell. You'd be running really fast and then.. A pit! ha your dead fuck you start the level again.
I managed to finish the game with both characters and I got all the chaos emeralds, and your reward for getting all the emeralds?. A super frustraiting boss!! Which I didnt beat. I assume that once you beat him you get a message about the value of freindship or something retarded.

Still it was an ok game. But I liked the old ones and gba ones better

Have to agree with you there, something doesn't feel right about Sonic Rush. It does capture the frantic 2D gameplay quite well, but the added fight rooms and extremely unfair and stretched-out boss battles aren't good. I dig the music a lot, however.

They could have thrown out all those "cutscenes" where the characters interact with each other, spewing amazingly dull dialogue.

Alright game, but I, too, like the GBA ones better. If anything, it's that the levels in Sonic Rush don't manage to be as fun as in the other games.

Am I the only one who has always liked Knuckles better than Sonic? I see Sonic 3/Knuckles as the pinnacle of the entire series. Of course, I also liked it back when the story was conveyed without any of the characters saying a single word...

Sonic Adventure was excellent, and remains as one of my favorite 3D platformers. It's sequel was horrid though, and going back now I can definetly see hints of where they were taking the franchise (Sonic Heroes, and now this piece of shit).

Also, people over-state the "speed" element of the old Sonic games. The only time it was really, really fast was when you hit a bumper, and those sequences essentailly took control out of the player. They have also never left the series, and bumps make you go just as fast as always, even in the 3D games. Platforming and puzzle solving has always been the real focus of the series, and the first Sonic Adventure captured this well.

I'll always have fond memories of Sonic Adventure. Just of how pretty it was, how comfortable those analog triggers were on the Dreamcast controller, but most of all the jungle area. Not any level, mind you, but the large area you could run around in, created as a series of tunnels with vegetation covering up most of the skybox.

It was a huge step forward in one of my most treasured goals for games: realistic organic environments. Before the best I'd seen were rooms with tree wallpaper. But this actually had a canopy! And was large!

Since then we've moved on to much greater realism (I count Far Cry and Oblivion as milestones), but I still like to run around in that jungle and groove on the music every once in a while.

I find it soo funny how this is "next gen" , man pc was pumping this stuff out like 10 years ago! I think the console market gets suckered in by buzz words like "next gen graphics"
Although I'm sure its fun, theres nothing ground breaking here.

No that's Mecha Sonic i think... Super is when you collect all the emerald or choas crystals or something, and it more or less faster and like mario with a star. I think, been a while.
