Go forth, slaugher zombies, raid the mall, storm the castle!
Well, not that last one, but its up, its downloading now, and its availble for UK and US residents. According to Major Nelson it's not available in Mexico, Germany, Australia, New Zealand or Asia.
Details (http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2006/08/04/Dead-Rising-Demo.aspx) of demo are here and it weighs in at almost 1 gig.

To our friends in German/Austraila/etc, just setup an American login with a free silver account, and login through it on your 360, there are plenty of online guides to setting them up.

The WHOLE POINT of online is that location really doesn't matter, why THE FUCK don't I have this? What fuckwit genius took his daily dose of peroxide for this piece of inspiration? I want a fucking name.
We get the full version later, I get that, you need to make it, ship it, all that shit. This is toggling a fucking flag on a file at most, there is no real reason on this Earth that myself and other Aussies/Kiwis so on shouldn't have access to this.

Checking the link's link, apparntly it's our laws or regulations or some shit. I really don't see how it's their business since the demos are not being sold. I can go right now, and find a picture of a girl fucking a horse in about 20 seconds, download it to my PC and enjoy it, yet a game demo is suddenly a no no. Bullshit, they don't want Aussies dragging down their severs.

Try calming the fuck down and creating a UK or US gamertag. There are instructions all over the place on how to do this. I have Japanese and German tags and have tons of content from those regions.
i'm sure it's not about aussies dragging down the servers as australia is still a somewhat small market for them. i think it's probably to play it safe since in the case of the marketplace it's connected to a device that's targetted at children. vote for some new politicians next time around.
anyway, back on topic, anyone got the demo yet? how is it? the EGM review numbers weren't so spectacular. :( god i wish work would fire me or something so i could go home and play :D

DR has a lot more gore in it than SR. Most likely the reason you don't have it is due to legal issues with releasing it in your territory. Sorry.
So, I mean, there's 2 things you can do here - continue crying about it like a little girl with a skinned knee, or go create another gamertag and grab the demo.

I found lots of impressions at the gamespot forums for Dead Rising, all of the posts were extremely positive. I didn't read anything negative at all, except how hard the skateboard is and questions on the games ability to maintain it's "fun factor" since we don't get any missions to try out in the demo.

I saw on a forum that the latest EGW only gives DR a 7.5, 7.0, and 8.0. Not bad scores, but only just above mediocrity. I wonder what caused them to score a game low that everyone is really enjoying the demo for? Length? I heard there are 9 different endings, and would it ever get old to stomp on zombies? Especially since I've learned not all zombies act the same, some run and some shuffle, some are fast and some are big and strong.
Though, that same issue gives N3 a pair of 4.5's and Prey only a 6.5, which seems pretty low for such a fun shooter as Prey is so far (I'm only on level 5 right now).

Those seem to be pretty good scores to me. I mean damn, an 8.0 is a very good game. They probably dinged it because it has no online component and after awhile I'm sure it gets old killing zombies. But I wouldn't call those scores just about mediocrity. Just because a game doesn't get straight 9.0s doesn't mean it's not a good game.

The 8 wasn't what really worried me. It was the two 7's that had me scratching my head. If I were to review a game I had a blast playing, it would get more than an 8. As such, when I see a number like 7 (or of course, less) I always assume that it was merely "pretty fun" but not a blast to play. I'm not paying $60 for "pretty fun", is my meaning. I *want* to buy this game, but not if it's like a 5 hour game with no replayability. That's what rentals are for.

The game/demo was quite good, but you can't dive into the story, so pretty much all you do is wander around thrasing zombies. Fun for 15 minutes, but I'm hoping the full version gives me a lot more than that. And I'm sure it will.

Yep, pretty much just let's you "test" zombie-thrashing. You can also see two game videos by traveling to either end of the mall. These are the psychos that you get to fight. Very cool stuff.
Zombie-thrashing is satisfying but I think that it is ultimately not what you are supposed to be doing. I think that the game is going to be more about getting through the zombies without fighting them in order to do all the plot points. . . Then, after you've learned the case, it will be all about killing zombies.
They give you really excellent starting weapons. . . extremely violent and fun. It was also a lot of fun to change outfits. :)
Oh, another cool thing is that it looks like OJ is pretty much a life-refill and that you get all that you want as long as you return to that fridge. . . Thus the time management playing a huge part in the gameplay.
I've never been much of a fan of that game dynamic. Having games that are so explorable and awesome but that have a time limit. . . well, they annoy the hell out of me. I want to go off the rails but return to them when I feel like it. . . not feel obligated to follow the main story because not doing so will mean not getting to see it. Screw that.
Also, I think it may have been disabled. . . but I hope that we have at least a little bit of direction about where to go for our next case file. The girl didn't actually give us her gun though, and we were instantly in an area far from the girl, so I suspect that intro video has very little to do with the actual goal of the demo. . . which is pretty crappy construction, but it excels elsewhere, so whatever.
It definitely FEELS like you are in Dawn of the Dead. . . shit-tons of zombies everywhere (not crazy amounts like the hordes of goblins in Ninety-Nine Nights) but still crazy amounts like we've seen in zombie pictures.
Fun stuff. . . I wish the demo had given us a boss fight though. I like being able to learn one boss before a game goes live. . . It's fun to show up and then just beat the hell out of someone because you've owned him in the demo so often. :)
Must buy for me.

By valid address and phone number they mean one that fits the following convention:
1234 Main Street
Baltimore, MD 21236
(410)555-1234
In the above example that is a valid city, state and zip code and telephone area code so that's a good start, make up the rest to fill out the fields. I don't live in Japan or England but making up valid addresses and phone numbers for both was easy enough so I could set-up Live accounts in both regions.

I've always liked that as well, though I really love it when the full version of the game turns the demo on it's ear in some way, so it's not quite like you've done it to death before you get the full game. F.E.A.R. did that too me, the demo areas were not in sequence or in the right places in the full game, and at one point I blew through one room and assumed I knew what was coming up, and got my ass blown away for my assumptions.

Oddly enough, when I have to fake a us address online, I always end up being Bob Gore, from Beverly Hills, California... since its the only valid zip code I know.

Just finished playing around with it. 3 times through and I've ended with 3 differnet cutscenes, each which clearly lead up to a boss fight of some kind. I'd have to say the best moment was flinging cd cases at a zombies head over and over until they fall down. Different weapons also seem to have slightly different uses, like the sledge hammer can do a wide arc swing if you're holding stlll, but if you're moving at all it does a head pounding smash.

I can't even say that I would trust Game Informer. The magazine is created exclusively for GameStop (and now EB). I've definately seen games get higher scores than what I would expect....because they want you to buy games. It's less an unbiased magazine, and more like sales propaganda.
Hah, why does the word propaganda always sound like conspiracy theory? :)
Oh well, I just wish I could go home right now and download that demo! If only Microsoft had given the 360 some sort of "standby" mode, like the Wii has. Then they could add some ability to use our Live accounts from a web browser and remotely have our system download stuff from the marketplace. That is my dream. Somebody make it happen!

Played through it 3 times already here, and going to do a fourth. Man, these weapons are fun. My favorite is either the shopping cart, the golf club, or the hot skillet. The skillet makes a nice *SSSSS* as you hold it up to a zombies face.
Have to admit, the controls are much nicer than I hoped, there's even a bit of auto aim with the swinging weapons. That and for some of them you really don't need to aim too much.

Even with the tie in to EB, I have never really had an issue with Game Informer. The scores seem reasonable, and they will actually nuke a bad game with like 3s or 4s, and reward good games with good scores. I suppose 9+'s tend to be a bit too common, but no worse then any other magazine. My biggest beef would be when the do developer previews for games coming soon, they hype them all to hell. Recently they have done that for Red Steal, Biohazard, GoW, etc... there are normally one or two huge hype pieces. Then again, all magazines are guilty of this too.

The point is we shouldn't have to.
The point is there are legal issues, so you might try crying to your government regulators instead of making ignorant accusations. MS doesn't control where content (other than their own) goes up. The publishers do. There are two factors that will determine if a territory gets something or not - whether or not the PUBLISHER wants it up there, and whether or not there are legal issues getting that particular piece of content up in that territory because of ratings issues.
Hate to be an ass, but this crying every time something comes out is getting ridiculous. Stop wasting your time with the belly aching and use an alternative method of getting what you want, since the belly aching is going to get you nowhere, whereas action will get you the demo.

If you go certian areas, you get a cutscene thats part of the story, also, if you wait too long (20 minutes it seems like actually) You get the day to night cutscene. Any cutscene or your death and the demo's over, but you can restart right after it.

I can go right now, and find a picture of a girl fucking a horse in about 20 seconds, download it to my PC and enjoy it, yet a game demo is suddenly a no no. Bullshit, they don't want Aussies dragging down their severs.

Censorship has nothing to do with whether it is being sold or not. You can jump on the net and find content that is illegal in this country, true, that doesn't mean that a company would not be liable if they were to directly publish it to that country.
Saint's Row is a title very similar to a series already available in this country (GTA obviously) whereas Dead Rising is a very brutal game so folks are taking it a little more cautiously until the OFLC is able to give an indication of what they think.
Don't stress though, as many have pointed out, just create a US account. I've got a US, Aus and Japanese account on my 360, it is easy.
Wow, was that a Dead Alive quote? Talk about cult classic!
Please it is called Braindead (everywhere but the US :P). Pick the Aussie. ;)
Seriously. If you want to go by reviews, then at least wait for a source that has at least a little credibility left like Game Informer or Gamespot. Otherwise, just grab the demo and think for yourself.
Please tell me you didn't just imply those sources were credible??? :P

GameSpot's reviews are generally solid; agreed (I disagree with ElPresidente on this one ;) ) I'll be downloading this sucker after work; my question is, how is this going to be substantially different from other hack-and-slash style games? I AM interested in the availability of multiple weaponry from within the environment...basically anything you can pick up, it seems, but I've never been a big fan of hack-and-slash gameplay. Will it be more than that?

Would this be a bad time to bitch about Play magazine again.
Funny thing is, every time ive mentioned the assitude that is Play, fitbabits pops into the thread and says "Dont get me started on Play magazine!".
Worse thing is, the bastard wont actually get started on Play magazine, so I havent a clue what he is talking about.
Anyways, no matter how bad a magazine is, Play is worse + 5. But it is pretty.

Try calming the fuck down and creating a UK or US gamertag. There are instructions all over the place on how to do this. I have Japanese and German tags and have tons of content from those regions.
The point is we shouldn't have to.
No, I think the point is don't bitch to us or complain to MS since it's the laws in the countries (that you live in) that are preventing or delaying the demo. People seem to whine about this issue every time there's a new download. Either stop whining or do something about it (either by using a different gamertag or better yet speaking to your representatives in your govt).

I am not a huge fan of any gaming magazine (they are shit) but the couple times I needed something light to read I picked up Play and thought it was great. Considering I have only read 3 or 4 issues over the past 2 years I am just curious as to why you find it to be worse than EGM, OPM or OXM? ANYWAY:
I liked the demo. I only played once (have to go to work soon) and I don't really have anything bad to say about it. I wish I knew what I was supposed to do, but it was a Demo, and not really a mission. More kill zmobies than anything. Which was fun. I'll have to read up a bit about the missions, but I think I'll be getting this on launch day.

Kameo is friggin' awesome. I love it. I am going to surpass 1000 on my Gamerscore this weekend as a result!
I want to get Table Tennis next, but until I find a cheap deal on it or arrange a trade with someone, I can wait a bit longer. But I really do want to pick up TT after playing the demo. I also still need to get GRAW.
I have Pac-Pix, F-Zero GP Legends, San Andreas Xbox and Phoenix Wright all still in the shrink wrap...I could start a trade thread with all the other games I have to offer as well, but I'm too lazy. (Too many games, not enough time to play them all)

OVERWHELMING BIAS... huge, disgustingly bad. See, OPM and OXM both have an obvious bias, but that should be fairly obvious up front. Besides the bias ( which is enough to make me hate the magazine ), the writers are asshats. Its as much about personal opinion and how they feel that day, then it is about what they are actually talking about. Its the type of magazine that starts an RTS article with "I dont like strategy games, but..." Um ok, if you dont like fucking strategy games, why are you reviewing them. Worse so, you cant score down a product because your not keen on the genre. Same way, jRPGs seem to be universally praised, even if they are pure shit. Finally, they worship all thing Japanese, to the appoint of obnoxious fanboy Otaku types.
Oh yeah, and the scores make no fucking sense. "The game had so so graphics, the gameplay was infuriating and their was no online play... I give it an 8.5".
Basically its like they plucked their authors from the worst of a gamespot forum argument. Its too bad to, because if reading the words in that magazine didnt cause my eyes to bleed, it would be pretty good. Its very purdy and all.

I cannot believe how fun the demo is. It is a wonderful experience. It is actually as if you are stuck in a Romero movie. Words cannot describe how much fun i am having just replaying the demo. I mean, once a slutty dressd zombie woman dropped to her knees and began to perform, what looked like felatio, except she was using her teeth and much blood was spurting from me. COME ON!!! How cool is that! :) The amount of enemies is staggering too, it does not look like they have been cut down in numbers at all, and the frameate is solid, all the while the game looks beautiful. I've noticed that the online sector isn't much better, Gametab/1up.com seem to be viciously pro-sony and simply swoon over all things Sqaure-Enix. As I've stated previously, I find it funny that it takes 5 years of hard work and pricey development to make a western style RPG like Baldur's Gate or Oblivion, but they manage to crap out a new final fantasy AND kingdom hearts nearly every year (both FF 12 and 13 and its many siblings are in production now.) Square must have one hell of a sweatshop.
Whats so great about afeminate characters chopping at each other with large, phallus-style swords?
uh, anyhow, back to this zombie thing we were talking about in the first place... anyone else find it funny that in the fine print it says "NOT APPROVED, LIECENCED OR OTHER WISE ENDORSED BY GEORGE A. RAMEO'S DAWN OF THE DEAD." ?

But they were released in consectutive years back in the PSX days. A way of making them artificaly longer is to add a whole bunch of random encounters, that will take up 60% of the game right there, just build your story around it add one main character designed in freakishly queer-eye fashion and presto- FF-XXVII

Oh dear god. Thank you for that tip, I never noticed the bleeding weapon of the gods was hiding right there. I wonder if that will be in the full version? That weapon ROCKS.
To an earlier poster who worried about hack and slash: Let me put your fears to rest. Theres hacking, slashing, smashing, shooting, and then there's sport.
I've never had a hack and slash where bowling became a weapon, or you could drive a shopping cart through a bunch of enemies, or use a golf club to drive balls as a weapon, This makes for a rather, unique mechanic on the usual pick blunt object, apply to enemy gameplay style.

Okay. I had to make another post. Two things.
One, I misspelled Slaughter in my original post, Maybe a mod could edit that? Makes me look goofier than I am, and its my first news post ever!
Two: This time around I started to play with the camera.
A female zombie in fishnets and gogoboots was walking towards me, so I put a hot frying pan to her face, she falls down, I take a picture. The outcome is a pink circle around her .. *ahem* lower parts that could be seen up the dress, and the picture is rated as "Erotica". Mind you, the picture is of a greyskinned female zombie with her face burned off.
Actually. There's probably a website devoted to that. I should get a new title. Zombie Erotica Photographer.

Just played the demo at lunch! It's laugh out loud funny. The Zombies fall down, get up, stagger around. They act just like Zombies in movies!
I expected, I'd have a few laughs, but wouldn't buy this game. Now I'm not so sure..., but I really want to get back into LOTR's (fun 8 hours so far) and pickup Prey, but I've spent 117 hours in Chromehounds and can't see a reason to stop yet... But, the Dead Rising demo was a ton of fun!
The variety of weapons is very good. Lot's of creativity. The mall is beautiful and fun to explore. I like that you have certain places to go and get a rest from the Zombies, but don't rest too long, because their always staggering towards you (the ones that see you at least...).
It's not so easy that you can coast or not pay attention. If you're not careful one of those blood suckers will manage to latch on and you'll have to shake them off.
I liked the cut scenes I saw as well. More boob physics. The blonde woman in the beggining had great hair, eyes etc. The NPC head movements and facial expressions were decent. I was thinking of Mass Effect as I'm watching the cut scenes and wondering how much more immersive the characters can get...
We are getting close to the time when the stories do matter and the characters, voice acting etc, is good enough for the average gamer to get attached or caught up in the characters and dialogue.
I know for some that's happened already, but really for the masses video game stories, acting etc, is B movie at best. I think it may be about to change in the next year or two...

The day I agree with every single review put out by a website is the day I stab my self in the eye with a satay dipped chopped stick.
Eurogamer is one of the few net review sites that has some writing talent and use a scoring system that is not artificially inflated by the strange belief that 7 should be the average point.
Anyway ON topic I'm sad because my download still hasn't finished. I was expecting to wake up and bright, shiny zombie killing goodness ready to go. :D
your homeland's semi-fascist restrictions prohibit this. You should move to the States -- here, at least it's still popular to pretend to give a shit for freedom.
Oh yay. Yet another ill informed moron passing judgement on a legal/political system they don't understand.

No, their score for Sensible Soccer 2006 was artificially inflated by the fact they got an exclusive early review and their score for Chromehounds was deflated by the fact they wanted Mechassault.
The reviewers main problem was the fact that he didn't like the style of the game so why the hell was the review given to him? Its like getting a FPS fan to review the latest RTS, of course he isn't going to bloody well like it. They lost all credibility for me with those two reviews.

I wasn't defending those reviews. Just saying on the balance, there is a much higher quality of writing on Eurogamer compared to Gamespot, Gamespy, IGN, etc.
The score comment was simply referencing that a 5 on Eurogamer is closer to being the score for an average game. On other sites a 7 is closer. The problem with that is that suddenly your scoring any halfway decent release in such a manner that you're really only rating games out of 4. (7, 8, 9 or 10).
Anyway you can find a horridly inaccurate review on pretty much any website out there. It is the joy of attempting to provide an objective comment on a subjective medium.

But why? Germany is about the only European country that is known for censorship.
Played the demo for about 5 minutes, although I will play around with it more tomorrow. What I played was fun and if I'm happy with what I see tomorrow, I'll probably pick it up when it gets released over here in September.

QFT!!! :)
I triangulate 6 things nowadays before a game purchase. Reviews and review scores are dropping a lot in my decision making since I started downloading so many games on the 360.
I've ranked them in order of importance for me, but they all play a part.
1. My interest in the genre
3. Word of mouth
3. Demo play
4. Developer/Franchise track record with that genre/franchise
5. Review content
6. Review score
Good example of why reviews can be misleading was hearing Mark MacDonald of www.gamevideos.com say, "All the maps in Chromehounds are mostly flat...". That might have been the most clueless statement I can remember reading in a long time. It was a massive hint, he didn't play more that a very few of the 80+ maps... And likely much of the rest of the game either!. Content can give you some clues about someone's review bias, but reviews typically do have a tilt and sometimes, it's difficult to determine what the tilt really is...
If I were to use review score, I'd use www.gamerankings.com as it's at least a consensus of review scores.

Awesome Dead Rising demo... but no money. Oh wait, look what came today, my housing deposit from my stay at the dorms last year.
Absolutely awesome game. As with any game, it has to be fun to execute the primary activities in the game, be it driving, shooting and even just moving the character around. Once you've got that down(as a developer), adding the details and story is just icing to a tasty cake.
Point is, the demo is 100% just about exploration and zombie killing, and that alone is just terribly satisfying. The first time you slam the sledgehammer down, you 'know' that the game is going to rock; the power of the swing, the detail in the particle smoke from impact, the 'hwamp-ting' sound as it its the mall floor...its the details that are just everywhere. Then, you add the little things like Frank laughing when something 'funny' happens to a zomibe (hot frying pan to the face [charge attack]), the most excellent golf club attack (again, charge it up and aim with the head; higher will chuck the ball up) and the shopping cart hustle.
Notable stuff:
You can mix food in the blender in the second floor restaurant. Each combination has a different effect, such as zombies temporarily being unable to 'grab' you (they can still swat), full health or having highly damaging 'spit' (ranged attack with no weapons drawn). Think of the herbs in RE, but apparently a bit more robust.
The security guards near right at the front entrance of the mall have pistols(each with 30 rounds). Speaking of which, the gun sounds in the game are outstanding.
At the first landing on the stairs, nearest to where you start, you can jump to the blue ledge(Frank grabs the edge). Run all the way towards the end for a fun hidden weapon.
Someone else already mentioned dropping down from the second floor restaurant onto a canopy for another hidden weapon.
There are several cutscenes depending on where you exit. The obvious ones are the main entrance, the movie theatre and the grand hall. You can also exit through the door right where you begin.
The fact that there is quite a variety to the game locations (from screens) and the ability to drive vehicles (including motorcycles), this is a definite winner. As I said earlier, the game is already fun just to play, and then you view all the cutscenes, and you simply cannot wait to find out where the story continues.
Cheers

I do that for console games. With PC it is a mix of looking at Gamerankings and the reviews in the mag I write for. The latter because I know the tastes of the other writers and I personally enjoy their writing. I wouldn't have read the mag so long otherwise. :P
But yes, taking an aggregate is generally the best way to go about it. Although there are exceptions. Chromehounds being one.
How one game could be misread by so many 'professionals' is beyond me.

OKay, I really liked the demo. Really. So I'll probably end up grabbing the retail game...but not at 60 bucks. That's my personal boycott. :)
I wish the demo wasn't timed. I started just killing everything and then found that time expired. The second time through I ran and explored more shops. Time expired, but at least I got to the sporting goods store to grab some awesome equipment. Anyone try the bowling ball? I also loved how I could pick up a shopping cart and throw it down the stairs, knocking tons of zombies down as it tipped end over end.
I wonder how it will be in the long run, if it will get boring or not. But I can see this game being an awesome stress reliever. The gameplay is obvious and could get repetitive, but at least for the demo it was great and had a wonderful atmosphere.
Will be avidly awaiting more reviews.

Yeah I saw the one with the father and sons with the rifles. I really am interested in the game because it has atmosphere, and I have always wanted to be in a mall by myself and run amok. Never thought about the zombies, but I guess I don't mind them tagging along.

Yeah, I'm the same way. That 1st scene with the blonde woman was pretty good. I thought it was a step above what I'd seen in Prey. I liked the story line in Prey's demo, but the man (your character) and the woman in the 1st scene seemed much more real. The way her boobs moved a little when she raised her gun or stumbled when she hurt her ankle (OK, so I was looking at her ankle too, but I'm a guy, I can't help looking at slightly giggling boobs). :) She stumbled more realistically than players in 90% of the sports games I've seen. I was looking closely at the wispy hair just below her ear, which was a different color than the blonde hair on her head, looking at her eyes and head movements ect, thinking this is good shit.
The 2 kids and the crazy dad who wanted the younger kid to shoot the human was interesting... Will he do it. Probably not, but maybe he tries and misses... maybe some Zombie jumps on them just in time and eats Dad's brains! Yeah!!!
The one with the 3 guys (they were Zombie like...) in the jeep bashing heads with the baseball bat. The I wanted to see the woman's face who knelt down and find out who she was...
Very weird. I usually skip the cutscenes, but these were interesting to me...

Did you see the cutscene where the girl in the bathroom stall is giving her boyfriend fellatio and she has an obvious cut/bite marks on her neck? Then he screams and she pulls her head back, her face all blood?
That one was fucked up.

This game's story has piqued my interest. The characters look great, and the voice-acting is anything but shab.

Demo was a lot of fun.
As several of you have mentioned, I came away interested in the story, something which I always thought was going to be pretty secondary to the game, and largely uninteresting.
The only worry I have now (and it's just a potential one) is that in the screens that list the "game features" after you finish the demo, there was the phrase "Achievements and keys downloaded from the Xbox Live Marketplace unlock rare items!"
So I'm just a little fearful now of the micropayments adding up, and that the game will ship with <1000 achievement points (I hate that, as a self confessed achievement whore). Because I can see myself really getting sucked in and paying for extra weapons in this game, so fingers crossed there're free content downloads...

That kinda bothered me as well, considering i play at a friend's place. I wouldn't mind chipping in a couple bucks for it, as it's sort of a new situation, but...why :(
Either way, me and my friend hot seated this for about 2 hours this afternoon, i totally forgot i had to go to my g/f's for dinner...
We had a blast, (try kicking the shopping carts for loads of fun (jump while holding it), beating zombies in with a megaman hat, putting hats on teh zombies and taking pictures of them...amusing, amusing for sure...going nuts with the katana/smg...totally fucking awesome. Can't wait for the full thing to come out.

Well it finally downloaded. I've been enjoying it but it is getting tired quickly. I think this is less the fault of the game and more the fault of the demo. The feeling of exploration wasn't there as the section of the mall you were confined to just isn't that big and all these tantalising locations I wanted to check out were barred to me.
Further the constant swarm of easy to defeat zombies makes the action seem a little skill-less. However hang a mission structure over that with objectives outside of seeing how many zombies you can kill... well then that all serves a great in game purpose.
In short I'm dissapointed in the demo, I thought it would tide me over til the game's full release but that is definately the problem of the demo itself. Despite my dissapointment I'm actually looking forward to the final release more than I was previously (and I already had it at the top of my must have list). The demo was like a teensy mouthfull of what looks like a grand feast. It was tasty but ultimately unsatisfying.

On second thought, I think I'm going to buy this game. Time restrictions in games usually don't work well with me because of the slow, exploratory manner I play games, but I find myself wishing the demo wasn't so feckin' short. That means I want to keep playing, and that's a good thing.
I don't know what it is...I hate repetitious gaming, but this title is really growing on me. In N3 you can kill hordes of enemies, and I hated N3, but Dead Rising makes each kill fun. Again, once those reviews come in, if they are remotely positive, I'm game.

I was pretty neutral towards the 360 when I came here but the volume and frequency of the fellating happening here has made me slightly negative towards the 360 thanks to the very shrill followers that it has on these forums. I have no problem with positive attitudes towards the 360. There are plenty of people on this site, like TrackZero and Bapenguin, who are very postive about it without being ridiculious. Then there are these other guys who rarely have anything interesting to say and whose posts mainly seem geared towards defending MS on whatever charge is being labeled (and sometimes even when no charge is being labeled at all) by compiling long lists about how wonder every MS does is.
Whenever I see those things, I just started skipping over them because they never have anything insightful or even new to say. They just sound like broken PR records. They could save themselves and us a lot of time by just replacing all those paragraphs of text with "Microsoft has beautiful dick and I love to suck it." The amount of sophistication and self respect their posts show would be about the same. Occasionally one of them will get off their banal proselytizing routine long enough to contribute to a real conversation, but mostly they just walk around with MS's hairy appendage in their mouth issuing forth muffled cries of ecstasy.

Oh I agree completely. Yesterday I even went as far as to go into the options screen and turn off signatures because Reanimated has taken sigs to a whole new extreme. Bean19 and I got into a little squabble about the price of the PS3. He said my constant rebuttal of, "No, the PS3 is 499 dollars, not 599," was retarded, fanboyish and repetitively wrong. After soothing our differences slightly, I told him I could just put the comment in my signature to save time and effort. Instead I put it in my User Title. And you know what? Before ten minutes had passed, Reanimated had put a counter of "The PS3 is 599!" in his signature.
To be an extremist in a religious organization or political group is one thing. But to be fanatical with videogames and hardware corporations? It's downright silly. I have plenty of friends here who are seriously pro-Xbox, and I have no problem with that. And they have no problem (most of the time) when I have something to say about the 360. Because the machine is not a deity, it isn't a sin to take its name in vain or to criticize it. But some people get so worked up that they begin to label me a negative fanboy who hates the 360 and anything Microsoft. That couldn't be farther from the truth.
But like trying to get the people on Trinity Broadcasting Network to listen to your views on evolution, dissenting comments fall on deaf ears. They only want to hear/think what they want. And now that my Gamerscore has soared with my love of Kameo and great comments about Table Tennis and Dead Rising, maybe they'll suddenly start showing up at my doorstep again, with their pamphlets and plastic smiles.

Get fucked over by anyone enough times and you start taking satisfaction when they get fucked. Sony has been fucking themselves a lot lately, thus the feeling of joy on this site because just about every gamer has been a victim of Sony at one point or another.
And the PS3 is $600, unlike the 360's core version (which never should of existed either), no ability to fully upgrade it, can't magically stick a HDMI slot on.

Kelegacy - And you never got the point that it was your quipping and repetitive thread hijacking onto the same old subject that was annoying. Sort of like you are trying to do now.
Eternalgamer - I'll be just as excited about other hardware when it's out, affordably priced, and has a ton of good games. While I reserve my opinion about the Wii until I can actually play one and some other questions are answered, I hope to be cheerleading for it just the same way that I love my PS2, DS, 360, Xbox, and PC. . . but I reserve the right to think that the GC didn't have enough games made for it (though some were excellent), the PS3 is too fucking expensive and doesnt' have any games that excite me until late NEXT year (except Resistance - which looks cool), and the PSP is a cool bit of technology but I only use it to play movies when traveling because like the Gamecube it doesn't have that many games - and not as many standout awesome ones like the GC.
So I guess you could call me a fanboy of a whole lot of systems, and I'm totally willing to back that up with lists of cool games and the reasons why I like those systems. If you aren't interested in hearing why people like what they like, then don't challenge people on it.
My hope is that the PS3 will be $100-$200 less next year and that it will have lots of cool games, at which point I will probably buy it and start being a fanboy for it. . . But for now. . . well, I played it at E3 and the game look like 360 games and there aren't as many games for it and it is super expensive.

I enjoyed the demo a good deal, but a few things did in fact disappoint me. For one, the combat isn't exactly what I was hoping for. Sure, the weapons are good, but I really wanted more fluid movements with better combo chaining. Something like N3 but on a smaller scale. It just seems overly stiff.
Also, loading times are longer than I'd like, and I really hope this doesn't become an issue every single time I move to a subsection of the mall. For that matter, several of the shops are emptier than I'd like, with just clothing options. While it does make finding weapons fun, it can be a bit disappointing too.

With the sheer number of things you can hit zombies with, that was never going to happen. Mind you, there's plenty of ??? in the moves area, so lvling up may open combos. As for loading times, they're a couple of seconds at most, it's not like you're sitting there waiting forever.

I'm actually a fan of the weapons breaking, forcing you to try a lot of everything. Yes, that is what bothers me. If, in the full game, it's going to have a loading screen every single time I go into a subsection of the mall -- then that will annoy me. I imagine it's caching some files though, because I've noticed on repeat plays of the demo the load times are much faster.
Schnoogs

A lot of those load times are because when you leave a section it shows a cutscene.
I'll reserve judgement on that til the final version is released. Otherwise it just seems like the necessary load time to load a cutscene.
Well the reason for my incredulity at the idea that load times would bother anyone goes hand in hand with a lack of antialiasing bothering anyone. I grew up with games, "suffering" through all sorts of technical limitations and marveling at technical achievements, and reading comments like "look at those jaggies, I'm not buying this game if they dont fix that" just smacks of ignorance. Most of those idiots probably dont even know what AA stands for (read above), yet they scream for it.
Anyway, short of notable games like GTA:SA and arguably Jak and Daxter, practically every game has loading(Oblivion loads, even for just a split second; pseudo-streaming), so I'm still not sure I see the problem in DR, as they're not long at all...what 3 seconds? Now if ALL games today were streaming and seamless, then you'd have a point, but in this space where ALL games actually load and very very few stream, I dont understand why this would be an issue. :)

One thing I've found for anyone wanting to just go crazy and smash up some zombies, you can get a book on maintenance from Bachman's Bookstore that makes the sledgehammer and the scythe last three times longer.

Most of Nintendo's games don't really load, I don't believe. I don't recall either Mario Sunshine or Wind Waker had loadtimes, but I could be wrong. Metriod Prime (sorta) has them, but it covers them up with elevators, which is at least better than stairing at a bar that completely removes you from the experience.

Damn straight! Nintendo hates load times so much that Nintendo simply stuck with a cartridge with the N64 because of this.
Even with the Cube they used a propriotary DVD format. Although it had more to do with piracy, but all the Gamecube games had a very very short load time in comparison to the other hardware guys. :D

I grew up on games as well, but there has indeed been times when the limitations outweighed the advancements. Remember when the PS2 first hit? The jaggies on Tekken Tag Tourney were just awful, showing the AA wasn't what many had hoped. Although it mattered less for the game's main genres, it was a big deal to many compared to the Xbox and GC.
Anyway, short of notable games like GTA:SA and arguably Jak and Daxter, practically every game has loading(Oblivion loads, even for just a split second; pseudo-streaming)
Oblivion, too, loads too often for my tastes. Every time you go in a building, town, you name it... loading. This is a problem I hope to see overcome. The worst offender of late in my book is Half Life 2. Mid-level "Loading..." screens pulled me right out of the experience, especially in the boat levels.
so I'm still not sure I see the problem in DR, as they're not long at all...what 3 seconds? Now if ALL games today were streaming and seamless, then you'd have a point, but in this space where ALL games actually load and very very few stream, I dont understand why this would be an issue. :)
I don't see why you're straining to see an issue. I dislike the loading times, you seemingly don't... that's that. I'd prefer my games to be either seamless, or as close as possible. I can understand having to load to go outside, but I'm hoping it's just the cutscenes causing the loading screens inside. I'm not saying I won't buy it otherwise.
I have to disagree it takes 3 seconds, the first load of the game took considerably longer for me. But, if you don't mind it then it probably feels like a lot less. Thankfully, like I said, the game seems to cache well and subsequent loaads went smoother. I assume this'll be used to good effect in the full game.

My hope is that the PS3 will be $100-$200 less next year and that it will have lots of cool games, at which point I will probably buy it and start being a fanboy for it.
I hope all of the systems go down in price by then as well, but I think it might be more likely that we'll see bundles which increase the value through next year; maybe a $100 drop at holiday '07?
I enjoyed the DR demo to a point, but it felt a bit to me like a hack-and-slash button-mash...I don't know; we'll see.

The reason its not an issue is simply that continuous data streaming is not common-place in games currently. MOST games have level loading, so by your apparent gaming tastes, you must have a problem 95% of the games out there.
A lot of you are acting like loading is so unusual? If the loads were outrageous, like in the Call of Juarez demo, then fine...that game takes forever. There will be a point when streaming IS common-place, and then I'd argue there to be no excuse for level loads, but until then, its unrealistic to complain about it.
I will agree, trying to navigate in and out of structures in Oblivion was far more tedious when you settle in to the almost continous streaming of the outdoors, but I dont feel its comparable here.
To each their own. *shrugs*

As far as I can tell, there's only a couple of us. I myself wasn't even referring much to the demo, but concerns with what may be in the full game. Though, the first load did take awhile on my system. I certainly never claimed streaming is common place, only that I'd like it to be. Honestly, you're the one making this a big deal.
You're trying to win an argument nobody is having.
why can't they just make the demo available for everyone??!!! i'm from Mexico and i think this sucks!!

Okie dokie chief...
...but you just now said you have concerns (for the full game) as have several others intially(and not just here on EA)...
...so I was asking 'why' this would be a concern to anyone, as its not unusual(loading)...
...and you and Eternal decided to chime in.
There's 'making this a big deal' out of something...and then there's talking about it. If you didn't want to talk about it, why did you bother replying to me?(that was rhetorical, feel free to move along, so a bigger deal isn't made out of all of this...no offense intended).

I figured this would be the next step in this little discussion. I think the key thing missing here is that you're including feelings from people not on this forum, and applying it to what I'm saying. I can only represent my view, not the views of others, especially views I haven't read.
I replied simply because you specifically asked for someone who complained to explain it to you. Rather than say "I see", it just seems like you won't accept that loading might be an issue for some. You're making arguements specifically saying why it's "not" an issue, but that's not something you can decide for everyone else.
Yes, I have concerns. We will see.

Get over it. I find your behavior obnoxious as well. You people keep trying to rebut me, but the fact of the matter is the PS3 is 499 for GAMING fans, not BLU-RAY LOVERS. GET OVER IT.

Okay there was something missing...
...what I was asking on why loading was an issue was in fact, why is loading an issue when 95% of the games have loading? As it is, DR does not have extraordinarily long load times...so WHY all of a sudden does it matter here? Is it some sort of "next-gen" expectation for whomever? Did they only ever play GTA and Wind Waker, never knowing of the world of data loading?
I contrasted all this by stating that games such as Call of Juarez (at least the demo), had INCREDIBLY long load times, to the point that its actually worth noting. DR's loading is about 4 seconds (not 3, sorry), so whats the deal?
This isn't 'defending' DR's loading as much as it is questioning how this is even worth mentioning, as it is NOT unique. Do you see what I'm saying? If loading in games was in fact NOT the norm, THEN it would be worth noting, but as it stands, its no different than the majority of games out there.
Regardless if one or two or twenty people said it, either here or elsewhere, my question only need be aimed at ONE person who feels loading is a problem, and have them explain why in the grand scheme of things?
I 'personally' don't care, and, if you reread my posts, my worded-inflection was more of disbelief than rabid fanboy vehemence. Hence why I continued to be baffled at me alledgedly making a big deal out of this.

I see it like this
I can have open spaces with oceans of zombies that has no chance of slowdown, or I can have seamless loading. I'll take my zombies.
And Bean, fear not, you'll always be more obnoxious then Kel, your crown is safe.

The load times were a little longer than the norm. Though remember, this is a DEMO and the area was limited to begin with. It remains to be seen how long it'll be in the retail game between load spots (for all we know, that may only happen once every half-hour -> hour). Obviously if it loaded like that every 15 minutes, it'd be kinda annoying, but I really doubt it'll be the case.

Another one? Are Evo and I the only people immune to whatever mutant warped reality this time making these small loading times so damn noticable to the average gamer? It's like earthquakes in LA, below a certain threshold, the average resident won't even notice them because it's LA and it has earthquakes.
You wanna bitch, bitch about Chromehounds, the loading times while short enough seem to appear every god damn menu screen. 3 seconds between seeing "loading" where it cuts you off from squad chat goes beyond that threshold I was just talking about.

Ill bite there, the load times in online Chromehounds whenever the room had to change from someone leaving were a little silly.
For the most part, I don't even notice load times. Even Valkarie Profile seems smooth to me. Either its that I'm a patient fellow...
Or its that at age 4, I started comupting on an Atari 800 with both Disk and TAPE DRIVE. You weenies want to talk loading: Zaxxon, 22 mintues to load off of tape. I guess when that's your start into gaming, a 3 second load time isn't noticeable. :D

I think this is exactly where Savok and I (as well as yourself Lekon) gained our immunity. For me a Vic20 with that damn tape drive and a C64 with the 1541 floppy. :D
I was just on PGR3 last night, and we were talking about how little perspective younger gamers have in contrast to the later 20 and early 30 somethings have that grew up through the emerging technologies since Pong. We see just how incredibly far games have come, and I'm continued to be thrilled with each iteration, then I read about how somone is "pissed" at the jaggies on such and such game (oh and at 1280x720 of all things  ) and it just fries a brain cell.
I just can't fathom the arbitrary things these people niggle over. So much for games being about gameplay eh?
Anyway, ultimately I dont think anyone would argue that they 'want' loading, and that an uninterrupted experience is ideal and awesome, I just dont see loading in most any game as an issue even worth mentioning (though PGR3's race launch loading is pretty long :p )

I remember playing Ghosts and Goblins I think it was (Ghouls and Ghosts the first one? I don't know anymore), on an XT. Fucker had this countdown at the top of the screen starting a bit over 400. Of course it was a lying counter in that it in no way resembled seconds and instead acted like a progress bar without the bar. It'd take something like 10 minutes to load, only for you to be dead in 5 seconds since it was G&G. Still, with a few lives and next load time being a shitload shorter, it was ok once past the initial horror.
