Gamespot's "GameFAQ's" (http://www.gamefaqs.com/) brings us their list of Top 10 Greatest Gaming Achievements (http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/top10/511.html).

There are certain games that are so difficult, or expansive, or demand such a level of time, effort, and skill, that they are known forever for their demands of a player. This list shows the Top Ten Greatest Achievements in Gaming. These achievements heralded the coming of a truly great gamer, for only someone with a wealth of time, skill, and patience could manage to accomplish these incredible feats.

The list is made up of mostly things from older generation games, but is still pretty concise, nonetheless. I've gotten #10 through #7 - I didn't think #3 or #2 was possible... and my brother has gotten #1. Don't know if I'm too proud of that.

I just thought of a couple I'd add:

-Beat Mike Tyson in Mike Tyson's Punch Out! (NES)
-Beat Tetris in Mode B, Level 9, Height 5 (NES)
-Get 100% completion in Super Mario World (SNES)
-Beat the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES)

I'm sure I'll think of others.

reaching lvl 60 in wow as a great gaming achievement? hardly. Now if you want to talk about MMORPG achievements, how about hitting lvl 126 in Asheron's Call pre allegiance chain whoring. Now THAT took some skill, dedication, and an unhealthy amount of time.

Was going to ask the same, haven't played WOW, hence the asking. I figured hitting level 50 in EQ1 would have ranked over that. Or maybe the raised limits post expansion if you prefer.

I'll take a shot:

-256th board in Pac-Man (arcade)
-Beating Battletoads (NES)
-Beating the Weapons in FFVII (PS1)
-Ascending in Nethack (various)

Getting to lvl 60 in WoW is not that hard. Just takes a bit of time. Doing it in EQ was a whole nother matter entirely... much more difficult, but still not a gaming achievement in my mind. There were much, much more difficult games out there --- I recall doing something heroic one day with Contra, but I don't remember what it was... Just that it took a buddy and I literally all day to do it.

Haha. I thought it meant Live Achievements before I read the link.

I'm getting close to having #1 done. I went to a Pokemon event in DC recently that completely renewed my interest in the game series once I saw how many grown adults were playing in the tournament, and playing in general!

"#5: Reach Level 60 - World of Warcraft (PC)"

What bullshit is this? I played EQ for twice as long as I did WoW, and I only made level 30. Getting to 60 in WoW is a fucking joke by comparison to any other MMO.

Pretty lame list actually. "Finding all the warp pipes in mario 1" is the 10th greatest gaming achievement of all time?

This list speaks more of the list writers gaming experiences than anything else. Especially since the PC rpgs seem to start at WoW, thus omitting Ultima, and countless other PC rpgs with a more difficult achievement.

Hmm, to add to the list "Finished 'Mad Maze' on Prodigy online." Those damn invisible mazes later on...

I thought the same thing myself at first. But then I thought back about the VERY FIRST time[s] I'd played the game... and discovering those for the first time was pretty much the most amazing thing I'd ever thought possible. I guess you just have to think in retrospect for most of these to have any value.

Except for maybe the WoW thing, but I've never played it, so I can't say anything about it.

I don't like the list because a lot of them are just things that require time, not skill.
Reaching level 60 in an MMO?
Any one can do that given enough time.

The DDR one is the only one I really consider any kind of great achievement.

Mine list would be things like... beating all Amplitude song on the hardest difficulty.
Completing any level 9 song in Beatmania.
Completing a game like Ikaruga (or any other of the insanely difficult shooters) without using continues.

Things like that. Things that actually take skill and not just time.
It's cool that people complete the Pokedex, but really... all that takes is time.
Not that the list aren't good achievements... but the 10 greatest? No freaking way.

But then... it did come from Gamegaqs...

These Top 10s at Gamefaqs are submitted by Gamefaqs users, btw. They're hardly definitive lists.

Indeed--that one is hardly a notable achievement, as ANYONE can do it given a few months of regular play. Now if they wanted to list a NOTABLE achievement from WoW, they should have said "Achieve Rank 14 in PvP".

As for some other more modern achievements, you CAN'T leave this one off the list:

"In Guitar Hero, get a 90% or higher on 'Cowboys from Hell' in Expert mode."

-Beating Battletoads (NES)
You sir, hit the proverbial nail on the head. I distinctly recall a hover-jet type level mid way through that I never once got past. WTF is up with that? Fifteen years later, I'd punch the fucker that made that level.

That ZAMN one would impress me the most. Heck, even being able to beat that thing is an achievment. I think my personal best is around level 27 or so with only a couple neighbors left.

Whoa, I'm going to pull a QFT. I'd completely forgotten about that rage-inducing Battletoads level. I was reading an article on the "Top 10 Hardest NES Games" once, and I'll never forget this line:

...I wish that the person who designed this level would choke to death on a condom full of bees...

I still laugh myself to tears at that.

Ascension is pretty straightforward once you know the usual traps.
I ascended twice, but read enough spoilers first.
Even with a "complete walkthrough", it's tough and you'll die a lot of stupid deaths.

now.. level 256 of pacman. That's impossible to get to without slowing down the game with an emu. It's called the Split Screen level (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac_man#Split-screen_level). (wiki)

Beating level five in Dragon's Fury for the Genesis. Most frustrating pinball game ever.

Agreed!!! OR how about obtain a full set of Teir 3 armor in WoW?

Opening the gates of Ahn Quaraj was also pretty unique...

Beating Marble Madness on the NES.

17 years later, still being able to sit down, cold turkey, and beat Marble Madness on the NES.

Terrible List.

#1 deserves to be beat Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1.

I have to say that as much "zombies ate my neighbors" as I played, I can tell you it was pretty fucking impossible to save all the victims, 1 or 2 players didn't matter at all.

Why isn't beating the original contra without the konami code up there? I have never even heard of anyone doing that.

Beating Actraiser 2 for the SNES would be a minor miracle.

Haha .. that "WOW lvl60" is a joke.
I would much rather have seen 7xGrandmaster in UO on retail servers.
Now that was a challenge.

Or completing the marathon in the old C64 game Track&Field! I managed to do 800m with a friend and we were wasted. Imagine a marathon? hehe.

I don't understand how this is a front page news story. As somebody already pointed out, this list is user submitted. It is not somebody who works for gamefaqs, but a message board user. They have a new list every day by somebody different. Most of them are pathetically retarded, like the top ten compilation games, which has Sonic Collection twice on the list, once for the Gamecube and once for the Xbox, because it had more.

For me, these lists are more for a laugh. Please don't put anymore of these on the front page. This one shouldn't have made it in the first place.

Finishing Diablo 2 Hell Difficulty in Hardcore mode online would have to be up there.

Lag deaths were a challenging little "the Fist of God randomly smites you into paste" feature that made it oh-so-unpredictable.

Shit, there were so many old, unpopular Nintendo and Sega games that were impossible to beat it's ridiculous. Does anyone remember Werewolf or W.U.R.M.? 2 games I got that I couldn't even get like half-way through. And I did manage to do about half the things on that list, so it's not because I suck, those were hard-ass games. Has anyone managed to beat God of War on god mode? I did, but had to cheat for the part at the end when he fights the clones of himself (gameshark, but I only used it for that part), I don't know how anyone could beat that part on god mode I tried so many fucking times I was ready to break my PS2 and call it a day.

Dear lord. Actraiser 1 was bad enough. The sequel nearly made me burst into tears.

Yes and yes.

Werewolf, I remember, confused the hell out of me to boot. I couldn't understand why my werewolf had giant blades for arms.

Once I played through the game a few times by using the Konami code, I was able to do it without losing more than two lives. It's just pattern memorization after awhile.

That is the biggest gaming achevement ever. I didn't even know anyone had done it.

I have a friend who plays Nethack religiously. He's ascended nearly every class type. I think he's working on doing the archaeologist, now. He's gotten as far as finding the Amulet, but died (stupidly) on the way back out. He's got screenshots of his best achievement: beating it as the tourist.
