Ok, first, I hate pronouncing it right.
Second, it drives me nuts that I can't pick up items like in Oblivion. I know the management of the item was difficult at best, but the immersion really did something for me.
I'm doing my best to not spoil anything for myself but man, it's hard not to look up the companion list for skills.

What do you mean by "pick up items like in Oblivion"? Like lift and move items? Just hold 'e' (or whatever use is on console) for that.

Been following #Skyrim (stuck at work on a long shift today :( ), and there's a ton of people proclaiming surprise at discovering there was a sprint button. heh I just happen to be that guy that checks controls before starting the game.

Wish I could find the IRL button for picking up stuff, maybe my apartment wouldn't be in such bad shape right now. :P We all become interior designers in this game. I spent at least an or two doing it in Oblivion, then I looked at my clothes and crap all strung out over the entirety of my apartment because I'm playing the damn game too much, and I HAD to laugh at myself. Loving this game, BF3 and MW3 have been put on the backburner for a while, as well as the rest of my life. :o

I was one of those weird gamers who always read the instruction book prior to actually turning on the console to play. This was a habit formed during my childhood; since I had no income, receiving new games was always a bit of an event. I did what I could to completely experience each new game, which involved pouring over the instruction book. This was also during the era where there was virtually zero exposition during gameplay...so if you wanted any sort of context for the events occurring within the game, you had to read the book.
Plus, I just liked knowing little things...like the fact that there's a sprint button.
This reminds me of all of the people who played through the lion's share of Fallout 3 without knowing V.A.T.S. existed.

Been avoiding threads with spoilers and playing the shit out of New Vegas with mods / full dlc to keep my mind of Skyrim. Just experiencing New Vegas in a complete enhanced form is such an improvement, I know I won't enjoy the bite-sized piece Skyrim will feed me for now.
It's a must wait for more patches and the modding community to awaken but I doubt I'll be able to last much longer than the new years before a purchase is mandatory.

Although I'm sure the game will be greatly enhanced by mods, and despite some really stupid technical issues present at the moment, the core game is fantastic this time. Playing without mods has been a blast for me so far.

[...] the core game is fantastic this time.
I'll second that. While Morrowind profited from its exotic and extraordinary world design, vanilla Oblivion always seemed kind of bland and hollow and needed several years of treatment by the modding community to realize its potential. With Skyrim however, Bethesda really seem to have invested a lot of thought and ressources in making the world and characters inhabiting it unique and memorable.
So far (some 20 hours into the game) I really enjoy exploring the world and don't think that will change soon, unlike what I experienced with Oblivion ("Oh look, another elven ruin! *yawn*").
I also like how they have streamlined the experience: no more weapon/armor repair, predefined spells, less incentive to power-level, more engaging combat. At the same time, they managed to keep enough depth for the game to stay interesting and challenging.
While the game is not perfect, it did manage to raise the bar for future open-world RPGs.
Sorry I haven't bothered to post, i've been too busy playing Skyrim.
Short version: I'm in love.
That's all you're going to get right now, cause I just want to go back.

It turned out a lot better than I expected on release. Of course there are some ridiculous glitches but they tend to add charm. Nothing makes being raped by a giant less miserable than being able to fly like a dragon when you die. I also had my audio quality set too high which would cause the main menu to just crash and is a widespread problem...
Luckily nothing game breaking after the audio issue. NPC reactions repeat way too damn much though and break immersion.

I have my gripes with the game. Every game has their flaws, and what I mean by flaws in this instance, is what I wanted/expected, and what they delivered.
I wanted somethings, and didn't get them, but that is ok, the game as a whole, all I can say is, it wins. Hands down, its a good game.

I wish they'd upped the complexity of armor instead of simplifying it. As in, I want to have to find left and right armor pieces like in Morrowind. It makes completing a set of armor much more rewarding.
That is the only non-technical complaint I can muster at the moment. Can't wait to jump back in tonight, I'm at 32 hours and I've been to less than half of the cities. It seems like every time I go somewhere new there's a wow moment. Riding up to Solitude, for instance, was amazing.

I'll just confirm what everyone is saying. I'm having a blast playing, and have barely stopped for anything other than work since I got it on Friday. I'm about 40 hours in and I don't feel as though I've really scratched the main quest line.
On top of that, I can definitely see myself playing through a second time as a pure caster or pure melee (I'm currently doing a stealth hybrid). Good times.

I'm enjoying the game myself. I wasn't fully in to it at first but after uncovering a few plots it has my full attention. I've only done a few of the main quests. I just joined the Dark Brotherhood and am starting on that quest chain.
I'm playing the PC version and I found a few technical bugs. Every once in awhile the game crashes to desktop but that could be anything really. Sometimes when I open doors inside building items in that room just go flying around for no reason and the sound of them clattering stays in the room. Quite annoying. Other than that the game runs great with all the graphics cranked to max.
Does anyone know if there are throwing weapons in the game? Daggers, etc?

My only gripe really is the leveling up system in the game. I guess I just dont care for it.
I dont like the spending points in the specific trees because where you want the points to go, you may not have leveled up enough. So you are left leveling up stuff you dont want to level up. And this by the way is a mini gripe, nothing that is a deal breaker, the game is amazing.

Crashing to the desktop is usually caused by your sound settings. Go into your Control Panel and find the sound settings, properties, advanced, and change your quality to a lower setting. Cant recall off the top of my head what setting was recommended, but it is a known issue.
Anyone else getting arrows stuck in them for a lengthened period of time? Haha.. it goes away eventually, but it's pretty silly.

24 bit 48000 Hz is what you should set it to.

Wow so that means there is something inherently wrong with their audio config. This really annoys me since the difference really is present and the problems itself is just plain stupid. I swear you would think these "AAA" developers would at least ensure that their products work well on modern systems...

You don't need to use that perk point, I've had 3 perks stored away during my crazy smithing/alchemy spree.

By the way, you can run the game without Steam by just running the main exectutable (tesv.exe in [Steam folder]\steamapps\common\skyrim) instead of the launcher. This may also help with random crashes to the desktop, but you lose the Steam overlay and statistics tracking. Another possible fix for crashing is to make the game large address aware (just google 4 GB patch).
Just mentioning this in case anyone else has crashing problems that are not solved by changing the audio sampling rate.

I like how they took the best parts from the Fallout games and the previous Elder Scrolls and scrapped the rest. Don't miss having to repair crap every couple fights. The perks really add to it. I was worried my level would cap out before I reach some of the better stuff, but it seems you can just keep going with levels, although it does get very hard around level 70 to keep going.

WTF perks? What is this Fallout?
Nah They killed the stat system. No more classes or primary skills. No more Farming ranks in speed (or whatever) attribute skills to nab that +5 before you level. When you create your character, all you choose is race.
What they did instead is give every skill its own perk tree. Raising a skill gains level exp, and every time you level you choose to boost either your magic/health/stamina and you net a skill perk. The old boosts you got from reaching one of the mastery levels (Apprentice, Journeyman, etc) are all there, along with stuff that boosts damage or efficiency (usually a 5 point with +20/40/60/80/100%) and adds new abilities for that skill. The higher the skill your raise, the more exp you gain from raising it, meaning there's more reason to specialize early-mid game.
It's actually really awesome, it's the first ES game I've played where you can actually define your class by playing. Before it was just kinda you picked what you started with, and it usually wasn't stuff you wanted on account of making sure you could level decently. There's a soft cap at lvl 50, and supposedly a theoretical cap in the 70's (if you put the time into it). There are 250 possible ways to spend skill points, though some of those are sub-trees in a skill where you'd likely only choose one path. Means you can still raise every skill to 100, but you can really only master a handful of them.
A bit different from Fallout's perk system, where they give you a 'power' of sorts per level. This is just advanced skill/'class' customization.

The only bad thing about it is that the UI they designed for it kind of sucks. Its really pretty to look at, but it wastes a whole lot of screen real estate when in that menu. Actually, that's my only complaint so far. The entire UI design is pretty, but wastes a lot of screen real estate space that makes everything take more time than it should when in the menus.
Capt_Thad

I like the UI in general, aside from some glitches, but can't disagree with it wasting a ton of screen space. Wish the skill menu was easier to navigate with the mouse, and wish I could hotkey from inventory instead of favorites.
Really shines for crafting though I think. Oblivion's alchemy interface was an incredible pain. Skyrim's alchemy interface really couldn't make it easier. Also a huge fan of the fact that I can hit 'm' to see the map, or 'i' to goto inventory now, instead of having to tab menu everything like Oblivion.
What's particularly [not] awesome, is that items with the same name seem to occupy the same slot in the favorites menu. Even if they're separate items, I can't favorite two of them. You lose your favorite marker on items when you're disarmed, but not when items are stored, which doesn't make sense. Too much of a pain to use it to keep track of my poisons too.
Not to mention that switching something on a hotkeyed slot (press 1 to goto hotkey 1, press 1 again to re-equip what you switched off) seems to unbind any other hotkeys that item is set to, which also doesn't make sense to me. I'll switch a spell in and have to rebind my hotkeys because I was fast swapping my main weapons. Took me awhile to figure out why stuff kept getting unbound.
Have to see what mods turn up I guess. Oblivion's stock UI was completely useless, but the UI mods were top-notch.
Speaking of hotkey annoyances, anyone know how to hotkey stuff to a specific hand? Seems like weapons default to main-hand, and spells vary depending on what's already equipped. I can lock dual daggers and my bow to the same slot, but I have to reset it every time I want to cast something. Wasn't a problem in Oblivion, on account of no dual-wield.

My biggest gripes with the game have so far all been related to the UI. The menus were obviously made to be navigated with a controller and mouse-control suffers. Clicking dialogue options sometimes doesn't work, the skill UI is cumbersome, and some of the on-screen button cues aren't accurate (they haven't updated with my new bindings). And until last night, when I found a mod, I couldn't take books - the game didn't recognize my new "activate" key and instead treated it as a hard-coded "turn the page" button.
Fortunately, UI is probably one of the easiest things for modders to fix, and I fully expect something very computer friendly in the next week or so, similar to some of the early oblivion mods.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to some quality mods coming out soon to patch some things up. But it's nice that, even without them, there isn't anything about the game in it's current form that's a dealbreaker. I can live with the UI, the glitches, bugs, occasional crashes, whatever. The game is so fun that I don't really even notice these things most of the time.

Well I know you can upgrade it. But the thing is, I want to look at something new. I liked the progression (until the progression stopped) in oblivion. You went from Iron, Steel, Silver, Dwarven, Elven, Glass, Ebony, Daedric.
I am going to do the unthinkable and look at the game guide later and see what is up with this. To see if there is a better weapon.

There's a ton of unique weapons and armor that you get from quests. Most of that will be scaled to match your level. Different regions have different min/max level ranges too, so stepping out of the Whiterun area pits against harder enemies who in turn have better gear.
Skyforge Steel Sword/Nord Hero Sword are base damage 11, which puts them at the same rank as the Elven Sword. Base types above that are glass, ebony, and daedric. I'm getting glass in my game and just starting to see ebony more regularly at lvl 33.
For higher stuff than that, you'll have to find unique weapons. heh Have the Pale Sword and Red Eagles Bane crossed over my bed. Started getting the Daedric artifact (different from daedric base) quests when I hit 30-ish, already have a couple of those weapons.

Problem is with this, the base level for this weapon goes up. My base for the skyforge sword is like 30 right now. And everything I come across, is no where near the damage for it. I can't find anything that is better. And I have been to almost every corner of the map.
Capt_Thad
11-17-2011, 12:28 PM
The base doesn't go up. Base damage is called base damage 'cause it's the stat before other stats are applied. Your 1h skill goes up and you add the damage perks, and everything is raised at the same rate. Weapons with the same base damage should all have the same damage leveled up.
The other problem you might be having is with the smithing. Upgrades for weapons are based on your smith level, and each weapon type has a different difficulty rating per upgrade stage. Better stuff is, of course, harder to upgrade. I guess skyforge steel counts as steel? Means the skill required to upgrade is pretty low relative to other weapons, so you'll be able to upgrade it a lot faster. You're not going to find many pre-upgraded weapons, you'll have to do that yourself. Might make the stats look a lot lower than it could be.
My Ebony bow has a base of 17, and I have it at superior (+3), and my archery stat is at 83 with all 5 damage upgrades (x2 damage). The bow's damage stat is at 67 now.
I have glass and ebony longswords in my storage, and I have an upgraded Blades sword and the Ebony Blade on my wall. Blades sword is the same base, but the rest are all higher stats. Just have to get the level scaling to catch up, I guess.
Have to keep in mind that uniques are usually level scaled too, so their level is decided by what level you get them at. Think picking up a unique in your 30's and 40's should outpace any steel weapons.

This was a section of about 10 doors that all moved in unison in a cave that I randomly entered. There were enough warnings near the entrances to these doors that I actually decided "now probably isn't a good time" and walked away.

As you can tell, i've mostly been using 2-handed axes for my game, i never once used the skyforge steel stuff, but smithing is my highest level skill (85 now! I've probably crafted 200 leather bracers) but between smithing and enchanting i've never came across anything in the wild that outpaces what i've created myself.
What's up with all the jacked up resolutions of your screens?
also..
Try links next time. No point in showing low quality screens. makes it look B.A.D.
ULTRA or GTFO!
So you decided to copy my entire post to tell me that, therefore making everyone go through all of my images twice?
As for the image resolutions, ask photobucket. They resize some images upon upload, not other ones.
Also, if you wanted to give me a better videocard, i'll post some "ultra" screenshots, till then I'm going to politely ask you to fuck off.

Quick question, does HDR override AA in this game like Oblivion?

11-17-2011, 03:12 PM
Well if I am not mistaken you are talking about the number under the picture of the weapon. I am in my inventory right now, and looking at the Skyforge steel sword.
The stat line reads: Damage 33 Weight 10 Value 93
I dont see where you are talkin about the base. If the damage is your base, then the base goes up constantly with this sword, and nothing has been comparing to it whatsoever.
Capt_Thad
11-17-2011, 03:20 PM
The base is a hard stat. You have to look at item tables. You can't see it in game, unless you have no skill in using the item type and it doesn't have any upgrades. Only stat you see in game is the one adjusted by your skills and upgrades. That number will constantly increase as your skill increases and you add perks.
Edit: Also of note, perks that boost for sets, like the two light armor perks (full light armor, matching light armor), only alter the stats when equipped. You'll see item without the perk when it's in your inventory, and then the stat will change on equip. Don't think there's anything like that for swords though.
some of the most fun I've ever had in a video game is walking into an inn, going werewolf, and then eating everybody.

INSTALL FXAA INJECTOR (http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=131) RIGHT NOW.
You might need to tweak it yourself to get everything just right for your taste but even Preset 1 is amazing compared to without. Just load up one of the presets and use the Pause/Break key to toggle it... Freaking amazing what a difference it makes.

I have the solution to that. Just don't spend the point yet and go work on said skill you want to add to. You can also try to find a trainer in that skill.

Wow, this is the first open-world game I've ever played that is
sooooooooooo maaaaaaaaaaaaaassive, that I feel like I'm in an
unbounded wilderness. Even in WoW, there's very clearly zones
but here you go for miles in any direction without any disctiontion,
without a single loading screen or hiccup, it's beautiful.
This game has mountains that are actually tall, like mountains
in the real world, not like little fake game mountains we're all
used to, but like mountains a mile high.
Right now I'm on the back of a horse, riding off into a snow-covered
forest on my way to a town miles away, practically lost in a blizzard,
with no idea what I might find. It's beautiful, dangerous, and the best
kind of exploring :)
I'm actually sorry I waited so long to play this >_> So what are you
waiting for? Holidays don't last forever. I can already tell that as soon
as I'm finished here, I'm starting up a new character and playing through
again <_<

You could always hook up your PC to your 52inch.
Also there is a program that allows you to convert 360 save files to PC save files so you wouldn't lose your progress. ;)

This game is a transcendent experience.
If this game is the model of things to come, then RPGs have a very bright
future ahead of them indeed.
I'm starting to think I could play this game exclusively for 2012 and not miss
a thing >_> It's that goddamn good.
I hereby declare Skyrim part of the gaming canon!
It's interesting to look at the progression of history for these games, RPGs.
Where did Square take us, and where did Bethesda take us.
Square created the genre, fine, but they became trope-bound. FFVII is heavily
shaded by gameplay mechanics created in the 8-bit era. With each succeeding
tech generation, the old FF gameplay became more and more anachronistic.
Bethesda instead said, lets take the core of what an RPG really is and bring
gameplay enabled by the most modern tech.
Skyrim is what Square would've created if the RPG genre had been invented this
year with this game. It's what they couldn't make in the 8-bit era, but what they
had envisioned originally.
It is sweeping scenic vistas, grand forests populated with creatures and monsters
alike. It is the true example of "dungeons and dragons" which typify the greatest
features of the RPG genre. It is an epic story told by essentially reality, no
game-master needed. He's there, behind the scenes, rolling the dice, but he's
invisible. I've been waiting for this.
There's minimal UI, no damage numbers, nothing to get between the player and
the game--or as absolutely minimal as possible.
This is what the game looks like while you're playing.

Contrast that with this:

That screenshot is beautiful. It is getting harder and harder to hold out.
Square did not create the RPG genre.
Yeah, square did not create the RPG genre. Hell, Dragon Quest was the first console RPG and that came out from Enix before square even knew what an RPG was, and even before then there were multiple D&D based PC RPGs.
Skyrim is the latest in the line of free roaming, western style RPGs that have been around since before graphics existed.

I hate to be a stick in the mud here, but I can't gush like everyone else is about this game. I only put about 20 hours myself into it, but I find it incredibly boring.
I keep thinking maybe its just the play style I've chosen. Being a Thief/Archer is terribly uninspired and all the exploration just leads me to the same snowy mountains or forest scenery with the occasional bear or pack of wolves to fight. Even the dungeons I come across all look the same; same boring traps with the same boring undead enemies.
The story is a mishmash with no direction. I have something like 30 quests in my log with no incentive to do one over the over. I expected some type of loot progression but itemization is terrible too. Iron, Steel, Ancient Nord, Dwarven....blah blah blah.
I'll eventually try a mage type class, but I really can't find the motivation. I really want to like this game, but I'm having a difficult time finding the allure everyone else is.

20 hours in probably isn't enough time. There aren't any character classes in Skyrim, you create one from whole cloth. Find a playstyle you like and go from there. I started as thief (sans archer) and switched to this viking concept and now I'm a stealthy viking... cat :P And carry a shield for the few enemies where it's absolutely necessary. Helps a lot with giants and trolls for instance :P

Good for you too. While I've never really let it get out of hand, my wife does have issuses when I spend the better part of a Saturday afternoon with a game rather than her and the kids, and she is right. When do I get to spend the most time with my children? On the weekend, so I play every other night between the hours of 10:30 and midnight, and once or twice a month I get a Saturday night from 9:00 until whenever to game with or without friends. I've been doing this for the last couple of years now, and my wife who had stopped getting me games for birthdays, Christmas, ect... has once again started because she knows I won't just drop out of life for weeks at a time.
But damn, this game is a digital drug that I want to hit again and again.
