Our man Liquidize105 hooked us up with 20 new screenshots (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15746) of Defcon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defcon_(computer_game)) from Introversion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Introversion_Software), makers of Darwinia.

This is on my must-buy list. One of those games I'll definitely pick up next year when I get a new Mac and dual boot with Windows XP (for gaming only of course.)
The ambient music in this game owns.

I've been looking forward to this ever since I first read about it a year ago... but alas, I think I'm the only person in the world that didn't like Darwinia, so I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much.
I hope my fears are unfounded.

I second that, this game looks like a lot of fun. Can't wait to blow myself up.

I dont like Darwinia.
I tried the demo (two of those) and didnt like it.
But I liked Uplink and Im buying defcon (any news about Steam delivery?)

I was somewhat neutral on Darwinia, based on the demo, and in the end didn't buy it. Perhaps I should have.
I loved the visual style, and really the style of the game in general. The gameplay, while somewhat simplistic in comparison to, say, a full-blown RTS, was still enjoyable.
But something felt missing. I'm sure the full version would probably prove me wrong on this, but it felt like the game lacked depth? After playing the demo I felt like I had seen everything I really needed to see -- the rest of the game would be variations on the same, interesting variations, possibly adding greatly to the complexity, but variations nonetheless?
Anyway, I'm still looking forward to Defcon.

Of course, I'm fairly sure Steam will carry this title :)

Darwinia was fun but waaaaaaaay overhyped.
Irregardless, this game looks intriguing, and I do believe I'll pre-order it.

Looks like shit, I bet it sucks
No bump-mapping
No high res textures
Low-poly (no poly!?) models
No physics engine
fucking pathetic

I'm not sure that's such a great idea for someone who uses the non-word "Irregardless" to be simulating thermo-nuclear warfare..
Oh and grin, whenever i feel my hackles rising over something [stupid]you post, I look slightly below your name, and then I know.

If it's not a word what is it?
I believe its a "corruption" of the word "regardless". With the latter being sanctioned by the english language.
...It’s formed from regardless by adding the negative prefix ir-; as regardless is already negative, the word is considered a logical absurdity.

It reminds me of the old Atari/Coleco Vision movie tie-in of Wargames.
That's a good thing, at least for me.

Oh right, dictionary.com is it? Hmm.. Well then, I see your "dictionary.com" and raise you a Merriam-Webster and an American heritage dictionary.

Draft's "Irregardless" is in the dictionary only to mark its status as a "non-word" (which, as a hyphenated compound word, is perfectly cromulent English).

Where's non-word???
Sorry, should have said: "non-standard" or "corruption of regardless" or "controversial and oft abused double negative" but "non-word" sounded way cooler..
Because it really isn't a word you would bring home to meet your mother. Its a word from the other side of the tracks who sells oregano as pot, steals car stereos, and kicks kittens.

the funny thing about Indie development is that sometime ppl just want to pay lots of money, because if not, they think the game suck.
Look at Valve's Portal game, its 100% based in Narbacular Drop, I d/l it and played, great game BTW, but, how many ppl here d/l it and played?
Are all holding their money to drop at the final product, just because you can pay money, so it must be a better game (the same with better graphics and some hype? ) ?
no flame here, move along!
Draft, I hope you're not serious. You can't expect to find even half of all hyphenated words in a dictionary.
And did you even read the definition you posted? It's a nonstandard word, invented in the 20th century and not considered English. Regardless, it's a double negative.
Draft
08-01-2006, 05:21 PM
Regardless, it's a double negative.I think you mean irregardless.
Irrespective of the thread tangent, this game brings me right back to 1983. "Wouldn't you prefer a nice game of chess?" "Later. Right now lets play Global Thermonuclear War".
So I guess the bar is set pretty low for me, I'll be pretty happy just to re-enact WarGames.

Enough people played it that Valve made it worth buying, I guess. I thought the game was excellent, and just needed to be full length instead of a short student project.
If Valve can preserve that gameplay while giving it the HL2 visual treatment and more levels, that's a good thing for independent and mainstream games. Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress... it's not like this is new to them.

I wish these guys the best of luck. This looks like exactly the kind of game that people would be willing to download and play.
I've got a couple of fantastic ideas that would sell thousands of copies via Steam (or Xbox Live), but I'm not a programmer.
I'm not fond of digital distribution at all - in fact I hate it - but I wish success on the people daring enough to try it and we will sure help hype them up around here.
It isn't a popular opinion, but I'm kind of in the Mark Rein camp. I think that it costs too much money to make and advertise a game for the episodic content thing to work (some people might say 6 hour games like Prey are episodic content) and I think consumers like the "I own it." feel you get with a box.
That said, I think Valve has really done an amazing job with Steam, brininging it from a bloated broken piece of crapware into a real content delivery system. I use it for Half-Life 2 and the Valve games. I'm not sure I'm willing to buy games from anyone else via that platform yet.

If this comes out on Steam then I hope I can get it to accept my credit card - I've had problems in the past. I bought Darwinia, boxed, direct from their website not long before it went up on Steam, and kicked myself when I found out.

I mean it, when this game drops, it may be the first RTS I really enjoy. I have faith in Introvision as their previous 2 games both pushed gaming in new ways.

I can't say I hate it, but the breadth of the applications of the new technology, and their possible impact on my wallet makes me aprehensive about digital distribution to say the least.

Or is it just about nuking?

If it comes out on Steam I won't be playing it.
I have nothing against online distribution as I'm big into MSFS and that's how the millions (?) of addons got to my computer.
I just don't like the spying aspect of Steam, because I believe it's going to lead to pay-per-play. That data is invaluable to Valve to learn how to milk us to the max.
But this is a nice game. Like all those nice war kill kill war war kill kill games that used to rule the gaming scene. Before fluffy pandas in tutus saving the princess games showed up.
