GameBrink (http://ww.gamebrink.com/) reviews Bomberman on the DS

Hudsons Bomberman series has been around since 1983 and even now, the games are going strong. While in the past, players mostly had to compete against AI opponents, bombing each other until only one remained standing, the formula has changed slightly for the outing this time. In Touch! Bomberman Land, it is rich Gold Bombermans birthday and his dad has given him and his friends a chance to spend the day on Bomber Island, a popular adventure pirate themed park filled with all sorts of attractions for the gang to enjoy.

I've got the first Bomberman DS. Great game, and WONDERFUL to boot an 8 player game w/ only one cart. However, I actually prefer the GBA Bomberman to it.

I picked up the DS version because it was on clearance and the 8 multi with a single cart sounded cool. The reason I never got the GBA one was because the multiplayer was supposed to take forever I heard. Plus playing wirelessly makes it so much more convenient on the DS. Is the reason you prefer the GBA one because of the single screen and 4 players? Because I wish they had some single screen 4 player maps. The DS version is great though.

We tried out Bomberman on DS single cart 8 player multiplayer and it was amazing. Set it to remote control bombs with the mic as the detonator. Insane. Everyone in the room screaming every time they want to detonate a bomb, accidentally (or intentionally?) deotnating their neighbours' bombs with increasingly stupid words. It sounds stupid but it's great fun for a party.

I see a Wi-Fi Connection logo on the game box art, which was the reason I held off on buying original Bomberman for DS, because I heard the new one would have online capabilities. Wish the review gave more info on how that works. I imagine only 4 player, but is it on 4 player sized maps or the 8 player sized ones?

I've played Bomberman since the NES, and played TONS of SNES Bomberman 3-5 w/ my dad, when I was living at home. (4-5 were Japan only, I think; thank you emulators!) The GBAs multiplayer link takes just about the same amount of loading time as the DS version, but the wireless thing makes the DS version way easier. (My dad and I played the GBA one at his house alot.) I prefer the GBA version because the maps stuck to the variety from the old Bomberman, especially Bomberman 4. The GBA version had REAL environments including classic layout, winter (with snowmen and igloos), underwater and other levels; the DS version is just classic block layout w/ varieties of play style. The GBA just felt more familiar to me. Also, the characters move faster in the GBA version, the speed of the original Bomberman. In the DS version, you have to pickup several speedups to get to "real" speed. It makes the beginings of rounds feel TOO sluggish. I still have my GBA copy and I'll keep it around.
