Where the hell are the games? Or any peep about them. An article on Next Generation (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3502&Itemid=2) has details on how many PS3 Dev Kits are floating around.

He noted that top publishers and developers are still strongly tied with SCEA. "The best and brightest development teams are hard at work creating familiar franchises and original IP for the PS3 including – EA, Konami, Sega, Rockstar, Activison and our own internal studios just to name a few," Bowling stated.

He also offered the latest PS3 dev kit shipment figures, in an effort to exhibit Sony's commitment to developers. "To date we have shipped more than 10,000 development systems to 208 companies in 11 countries, the largest number ever for a PlayStation platform."

10000 / 208 = ~48. That can't be true. How can developers afford this? Especially when next gen is supposed to be so expensive to develop for...

PS3 is one year behind with an even less affordable console including a blueray drive nobody really needs at this point (HD movies are not the craze DVD was).

They need to deliver some amazing games and online functionality to keep the number 1 spot.

not every dev gets the same amount, big dev's like EA or something would get tons of kits, while smaller dev's might only get a few.

Also keep in mind that that 10,000 number includes alpha, beta, and final kits that have been shipped.

That's still a lot. That would mean that developers under big publishers would get like 60 dev kits (or how ever you want to divide them) while independants would get like 20, or whater.

Also keep in mind that that 10,000 number includes alpha, beta, and final kits that have been shipped.

Yeah that sounds more reasonable. If the distribution was equal, that would mean around 16 dev kits, which seems much more realistic for the number of companies they've provided.

Perhaps in shipping so many they are trying to make it as easy as possible for developers to get games ready in order to close the gap on the 360s library.

I wouldnt worry too much about the (apparent) lack of announced games. Why announce something now for its publicity to be lost in the launch hype?

I call bullshit...there's no way they've shipped THAT many kits with such few games announced.

Where the hell are the games? Or any peep about them.Seeing as how these statements have absolutely nothing to do with the article mentioned, at the very least they should be italicized at the bottom, or even better in a separate reply. I really don't want to have to sift through people's whines/complaints/caveats when trying to figure out what the newspost is about.

Click on the link to read the article. Problem solved. It's ironic that someone complaining about whining and complaining is whining and complaining :D

Can you please reference the universal constant that defines the relationship between devkits shipped and games announced.

I can't seem to find it, much less take the next step and call bullshit because Sony may be violating it.

"Bob, the PS3 devkits just arrived via Fedex."

"Oh shit! Bill, we're going to have to send them back, we've not announced to the world what games we're working on."

"Bob, we're keeping them. I know we've not announced yet, but since we're just storyboarding and tossing around play mechanic ideas at this point, I don't feel the need to start the hype machine yet. Lets wait till we have an alpha on the devkits that gives us a good idea of what the final game is going to be like, then we can start the hype engines."

On a serious note, I do have to give H. Bogard credit for reading every press release from every development house in the world that has ps3 devkits. I give him particularly high marks for reading the ones in languages he doesn't even know. That is quite a bit of research to do just to call bullshit on Sony, the man must be on a mission. :)

Not in the smartass way someone like Perigon would ask, but how is this news? A bunch of dev kits have been sent out to a lot of dev houses. Did Sony think shipping a bunch a dev kits would sound like success? Is it? Have they named one launch game? Isn't it time for them to announce the list of games that scream "Worth $600"?

Why announce something now for its publicity to be lost in the launch hype? Because people are buying XBOX360's and in many cases a family cannot afford 2 consoles - especially now with the hefty PS3 price. Being the last of the next-gen will have a huge impact I think. Not in Japan offcourse, but around the world.

If PS3 delivers more than XBOX360 people will pay more. If the games visually and gameplaywise are equal or inferior to the XBOX360 they will get hurt. Imagine Halo3 surpassing the launchgames PS3 has planned (and they release at the same time) then SONY will be in trouble.

Developers have claimed the PS3 is hard to develop for and the XBOX360 easy. If true, this means developers will get the max out of XBOX360 quicker and for the PS3 slower. This again suggests the PS3 launch to be inferior to the games scheduled to release on the XBOX360 at the same time. I'm sure PS3 will surpass the XBOX360 in 3-4 years, but until then MS could sell ALOT of consoles. I think SONY will get beaten slightly by MS, and the big final battle is for the next-next-gen consoles. If SONY stumbles again with the PS4 they will get creamed. MS is probably already hard at work on the next XBOX.

Notice they just say "Dev Kits" They don't actually say "beta Dev Kits". This number could easily include all the alpha and pre-alpha dev kits that have been shipped out.
The performance on those is horrible, compared to final dev kits and not that useful.

THe other problem is to just test a PS3 game your going to need 10+ dev kits or final units so the testers can really pound on the game. Final units don't exist and our company is operating at about 25% of what we need for test.

Why announce something now for its publicity to be lost in the launch hype?Damn! You are so right! Why would anyone want to hear about an upcoming game like Gears or War or Metal Gear S? Oh wait, people DO want to hear about upcoming games! Silly me! And Sony should announce a ton of games to prevent people from buying the 360. The games Sony announces should look like they are worth $600. Come on now, it is just common sense.

They need to announce something now to create launch hype. At least around here, people aren't particuraly excited about the PS3 launch. If we don't hear of some promising games, why consider a PS3 purchase? The "cheap" Blu-Ray player? At that price, it better make me toast.

The devkits probably don't have or need blu-ray drives.

Blu-ray is just a storage medium, easily emulated.

Notice how they don't state *which* dev kits these are. Everyone here assumes that there are 10,000 final kits which just started shipping. This isn't true, they are including Alpha and Beta kits in this number which have already been recalled by Sony now that final kits are going out.

You're at least the fourth poster to point this out - obviously "everyone" didn't miss that.

I fucking hate it when people do that. I get the impression that they read the newspost, assume that everyone else is stupid, and then post with that assumption in mind. It happens far too often.
