Two questions:

1. A good cheap alternative to the ipod as an MP3 player.

2. An alternative program to run music instead of Windows Media Player or iTunes. I think both are bloated pieces of shit. A friend of mine in college used a good alternative program a lot of tech heads seem to like, but I can't remember.

Thanks peeps!

1. I have an old Creative Zen. Works decent enough for me. http://us.store.creative.com/Creative-ZEN-MX-SE-MP3-Player/M/B00314DC3E.htm

2. Winamp?

1. Sansa Fuze (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=50001404&IsNodeId=1&Description=sansa%20fuze&name=SanDisk&Order=BESTMATCH), check out the Sansa Clip+ (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=50001404&IsNodeId=1&Description=sansa%20clip&name=SanDisk&Order=BESTMATCH) too if you're interested in it for running. You can catch woot sales on them every now and then.

2. Foobar (http://www.foobar2000.org/)

Honestly, I would just go on Craigslist and get a used iPod. I'm not into the whole Apple thing myself but those seem the norm these days.

Edit - Local pickup of course on Craigslist. :)

My 30GB Gen 1 zune works just fine. Heavy use, about 40 hrs a week. Apparently the sound quality is better then ipod. Got mine for 60$ off ebay. As with any mp3 player the stock headphones are crappy, i suggest JVC or pioneer in-ear buds. 20$

Zune software has nowhere near the bloat itunes has, easier to navigate also. Only downside is if in the winter you are in a static electricity situation and you touch the wrong thing, the shock will go into your dam ear and the zune will reboot (common prob with zunes). Lol that only happened twice though.

The lightest badassest media player of them all is media player classic, VLC is good to.

I use Spotify to stream and listen to music. And since I'm a subscriper I also have access to the Spotify App (Android and iPhone) that can stream or download and play ofline. Works pretty darn good imo. But a dedicated mp3 player is perhaps more what you want.

I belive Spotify is pretty new in the US? I have a couple of invites if anyone wants one, just shoot me a PM.

Sony Walkman mp3 (get the s class ONLY or A series) However if you feel like music is your life and you need moar sound quality get the COWON D2+.

MEDIAMONKEY IS BETTER THAN WIMPAMP! Trust me it is a great program!

I've been looking at MediaMonkey and WinAmp... both work with iPods/pads/phones...
