At 10am PST the demo of the promising 4X space strategy game Sword of the Stars (http://www.swordofthestars.com/) will be released. The demo features 2 races, limited technology, 40 star galaxy, 4 player multiplayer(sweet) and unlimited turns(yay).
Sword of the Stars is a breakthrough 4X Strategy game brought to you by the core team behind the highly acclaimed title, Homeworld: Cataclysm. Sword of the Stars returns gamers to the action-packed roots of the 4X genre with some new twists, including a 3D starmap and real-time combat resolution in a 3D environment
The demo sounds delicous! Good thing some devs still provide demos that last longer than 10 minutes.

Ironically, the only two games where I played the demo and immediately (like the same day) went out and bought the game were Roller Coaster Tycoon and Heroes of Might and Magic 1. Both those games had demos long enough to act as a game in and of itself.

any early word on how this might stack up against GalCiv 2?

They are pretty different. SotS is a bit like Master of Orion so the galaxy aspect is simpler than in GalCiv but the tactical combat has much more depth.

Excellent, another demo in recent memory with a sensible filesize. :)

It needs a heck of a lot of work if you ask me, the interface in partiular was downright confusing, but it shows all signs of being good fun when complete.

I need have to agree with you about the interface. It was clunky at best. The combat also didn't quite feel right.
It will probubly be a good game, but I will stick to GalCiv 2 :(

That was horrible!
I had not a clue as how to really get anything done, even after the tutorial!

Please, I hope it's true that this could be the successor to MOO after all of these years and failed attempts (MOO2 and MOO 3, anyone?).
I tried GalCiv 2 - it has some *great* features, don't get me wrong, but it's not MOO-ish like I want it to be.

Just remember, HoMM5 had that horrible, horrible... thing, and it turned out fine once the devs got to finish the game.

MOO2 a failed attempt?!! Blasphemy.

What thing? I liked the HoMM5 demo and the actual game.

Like greenapple, I'm astonished... Moo2 a failed attempt? Crazy talk.
The only thing that bugs me about Moo2 is that you have to choose to either micro-manage all ship combat, or let the computer crunch the numbers and decide the outcome in a couple seconds. That all-or-nothing approach irked me greatly. I miss being able to control the battle myself, and then with it was a foregone conclusion I was going to win or lose, let the computer finish up, or skip inconsequential battles altogether instead of wasting an absurdly disproportionate amount of time on them. =(
But other than that, Moo2 was/is great.

The Beta they released months before the demo. The Internet was out for blood.

i pretty much hated moo2 as well, all of the changes they made seemed to be for the worse - mostly making things needlessly complicated. i've still got moo on my machine, and still play it. it = t3h aw3som3. n stuff.
back on topic, this demo = donkey-balls. i thought the interface was supposed to be easy to use- and, well, good? as a whole it felt like it was half-or-less-finished, and that some of the fundamental ideas were just plain bad.
