FiringSquad has a lengthy interview today about the AMD-ATI merger, interviewing AMD's Jon Carville and ATI's Chris Evenden on the biggest PC hardware merger in recent memory. We also have comments from NVIDIA's Derek Perez on the merger, a (very brief) response from Intel's Dan Synder and comments from a number of game developers including Gearbox Software's Randy Pitchford, Iron Lore's Brian Sullivan and more. Check out the interview right here (http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/amd_ati_merger/). Here is a snip
FiringSquad: Are there any possible anti-trust concerns for this merger at this time?
Chris Evenden: Well as a result of this merger there will still be two graphics companies and two processor companies. Anyone competing in the same industry as Intel, you know you have a hard time complaining about the market power when you’re in the same industry as Intel. So if you were to propose that ATI and AMD merging together was anti-competitive then you’d have to expect that Intel would be broken up first.
Jon Carvill: And ultimately from a monopoly perspective, ATI-AMD is nowhere near that, so from our standpoint, we don’t expect to have any issues there.

nVidia's Director of Public Relations reponds:
So if you think about it, it’s kind of like ATI’s thrown in the towel right? Getting beat on both ends, looking for a way out, a little bit like 3dfx a few years back.
Uh...ok.

Uh...ok.
My thoughts exactly. That didn't make any sense at all.

No... but Nividia still delivers a product that works. That is more than I can say for ATI. Hopefully a little AMD rubs off on the fuckers.

Soooo working with others as long as the others are fine with it. Nforce chipsets are still a go as long as Nvidia wants that action. But it's like all in house now so whats to stop AMD and ATi making sure their own product is that much badass so that it's a step above others offerings. Althought I wouldn't see any reason for ATi to screw up their Intell boards because overall it would be money in the bank for them.
The seem like they want to be seperate as much as they are together. Atleast now. Wanting to continue relations with third parties atleast.

Nvidia delivers a product that works. Yes they do... in windows. While you are criticizing ATI's drivers... try setting up xserver-xfree86 sometime and see what happens when you try to detect an Nvidia video device. Nvidia's DCC information sucks ass. Period. While that probably means nothing to most of the market... there are those of us who use our old systems (or upgraded systems) for other uses... and my experience w/ Nvidia has been terrible on the Linux/BSD platforms. ATI on the other hand... no problems... (no im not counting chipsets on that one...).
I agree... nvidia does make a fantastic product... under the proper platform.
I'll stick w/ ATI as I have stock in AMD.
Since it won't be read anymore (thread update)... Im reposting my thing from this morning... (removed link as it's redundant).
Heya fellas...
Sorry if this is a repost...
There was an interview up on FiringSquad about the ATI & AMD merger and they got to talk w/ some of the higher ups.
Most of the article is blah blah blah we are getting bigger and want to move in this direction. blah blah blah blah we are all happy we had sex together. Blech blarf bloooreity this is good for all involved and I hope Intel doesn't hate us.
After re-reading the article... One of the things that I thought about was the ATI integration... such as in thier development of chipsets for console gaming...
In the past, ATI created the Gamecube graphics engine (no name sry...)
And currently the Xenos chipset for the Xbox 360, alongside the Nintendo development of the Wii... I think they are making quite a name for themselves (at least in the console market). Who knows with Sony... but they usually come out ok. Should make for an interesting next couple of years...
