Neither a Monster House or a wet Lady could drown out Disney's successfull Pirates of the Caribbean, which floated top the top of the Weekend Boxoffice Chart for the third weekend in a row.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $35.0/$321.7

What happened to the M. Knight of Sixth Sense and Unbreakable? I wish Disney would have sucked it up and let him make the other two Unbreakable sequels.

I actually saw quite a few movies this weekend.
Lady in the Water was not bad at all, decent movie though maybe just a bit slow. To be honest, while it was decent, it would have probably made a great rental, though it was only a moderate theatre experience.
My Super Ex-Girlfriend was pretty fun, and had some good gags. Luke Wilson is always fun to watch, and of course Uma is lots of fun as well, especially in this role. Again, and like most movies these days, it would have been better as a rental, but my wife and I had a good time at this one.
Clerks II was freaking awesome. I laughed so hard I was missing dialog, it's a tremendously funny movie, even if you never saw the first one.

Looks like there's not going to be SUperman sequel, since Warner has said if it doesn't break 200 the property is going back in the vault...

I thought Singer announced a sequal for 2009. At least I thought he did at Comic-Con.

You have to realize they are going with rental profits there, and I am willing to bet most folks that haven't seen it yet are going to purchase it out right, in fact. It's by NO means a failure. ;)
Don't be silly. Superman will have a sequel. It's just a matter of how long we have to wait.
Personally I think M. Knigth made some stinker movies these past years. I liked 6th Sense, but I was so mad after watching Signs - 2 hours of my life wasted on nothing at all interesting in any way. ZzZzzz.

Qoz - Well, he still delivers different movie experiences. I don't really feel a need to go to the movies to see his films, but I always rent/watch them.
The fact that "Little Man" is doing so well proves that stupid people are the movie-going audience. If they would just come up with a way to force people who view that film to take cyanide caplets. Let them watch the movie first, of course.

No, he basically said if there is one, and he was careful to state that at this point there isn't, he'd like to do it. He also said of the writing team that he would like ot have them back, "if he could afford them", which puts some validity behind waner brothers statement that it will not get a sequel unless it clears 200 domestically, and even if it does then the sequel will have a budget a fraction of what this films was.

That's what I'm thinking of people who enjoyed Clerks 2. I'm basically 100% the audiance that movie was made for and I thought it was terrible. There's a difference between being a fan of Kevin Smith and being willing to eat anything puts on a plate for you and yell out five star meal.

The last thing I read was that there will be a sequel, but that the budget will be about half what they spent on Superman Returns. (Around 305 Million.)
As a result, I'm not sure if Singer will be back for the sequel.

I traded up Clerks this weekend for Pirates. Pirates showed me the true meaning of good marketing. There's no way in hell that movie deserves the $300 million it's made. It rode solely on the shoulders of its predecessor and delivered far less.

What happenend? M. Knight works in a vacuum, he has no producer or executive that will stand up to him force changes. I think he is excellent at mood and cinematography...its his dialoge, characterization and plot points that suck. With the right producer he could be one of the best. After the Villiage I have no desire to pay money to see his movies untill he gets some help.

I enjoyed Clerks 2 and had quite a few laughs from it, and yes, I'm a Smith fan as well. I'm sure we'll see it make more money next weekend once word of mouth spreads.

Though I fronted certainty about Clerks 2 being awesome to my friends, I have to admit that I was more than a little worried that it wouldn't deliver. I laughed my pants off, and the story, though quite a bit of retread, was probably better than the original. Still, the original was a bit sharper and more original, but compared to most of the movies that have come out this year Clerks 2 stands up pretty well.

I thought Clerks 2 was solid, not as sharp as the original, but still better than most of Smith's movies. I have a love/hate relationship with Smith in that I love the original Clerks and Dogma and hate everything else he has made.
I've never been a big Kevin Smith fan, but I did like Dogma, and I thought Clerks was mildly entertaining.
So, the critics all hated Lady in the Water, which isn't surprising, but I'm such a huge M. Night fan, I'm considering just going anyway. One of my best friends told me it was pretty good, and he and I usually have similar tastes. I'm sad that they're cutting the budget for the next Superman, because it was a really great film. If only more people had seen it... I just dont think it got enough good press. It's an impressive film that is most certainly worth seeing on the big screen (one of the few movies that is this year), and I found myself wanting to go again. I'll probably hit up the Imax this weekend. I know for a fact that every Imax show for the last 3 weeks has been sold out, so maybe people are just slowly making their way into the theater... who knows?

Superman I thought was a lot better than I expected. I'm not a big Superman fan, for the typical reasons, but the movie was wonderfully done. Havn't seen Clerks 2 yet, I'm back from a vacation and need to wait until payday. (Picking up two Fang keypads and a copy of Guild Wars for the wife drained the account)
Now, regarding M. Night, I love his movies to date. Sixth Sense was good..but typical. But it's Unbreakable and Signs that I love. Why? Because both of them are interesting, for different reasons.
Unbreakable is an orgin story without the super-hero. Usually when you watch a super-hero movie..you know his powers, you know what he's going to do. Unbreakable is a very subtle in this way. You get his powers through the movie, but when you start watching it, all that seems so very far away.
Signs is not about aliens. It's not about religious faith, as so many people think, but it is about faith of another type. It's about how a family deals with a world-changing event in a personal manner. It's about people sitting down watching CNN, fascinated and horrified at the same time. That's what the movie is about, and it does a great job of it.
Strangely enough I don't really have high hopes for Lady in the Water. I think it's because the movie seems too detatched from reality. From the personal viewpoint that his movies provide. It seems too busy character-wise, at least to me.

Superman will clear $200 million. Just. But as for a sequel? I'm betting severly reduced budget (at least $100 million slashed), new director and new writing team. Of course these are just guesses, but Superman didn't do nearly aswell as everyone thought. I mean Pirates has grossed double that, and it still can't be beaten. Oh well, we'll have Snakes on a Plane soon enough.

No movies for me this past weekend. I was just a little too busy, though I am interested in seeing Clerks 2, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, and possibly Midnight Shamalamadingdong's latest. I wasn't really impressed enough by Signs or the Village to be really enthusiastic about this movie, though. Maybe a rental.
I've seen Superman twice since it opened and I thought it was quite good, though I'm not surprised it hasn't broken any records.. Going into it for the first time, I wasn't sure what to expect. The trailers I had seen didn't really grab me and they actually made it look more like the Lex Luthor Show as I didn't think showcased how everyone else would handle the reigns of Clark, Lois, or the rest of the gang. I more or less went feeling obligated to check out of the comic book action flicks of the summer. I was glad I did, but if someone who is a big fan of comic book movie adaptations was slightly apprehensive about how things might turn out, I'm not sure how the average Joe Moviegoer is going to be persuaded into the theater for it.
Also, Pie-Rats coming out the following week certainly didn't do it any good. It has a much broader appeal and a solid footing in the general audience's mind after the first movie's success. Though I don't think Superman Returns is a "kid's movie" so much, it definitely doesn't help that the younger audience is going to be much more interested in Jack Sparrow and crew than they will be in Supes, having much more recent experience with the former. Regardless, I enjoyed Pirates a lot.. I'm not a big Johnny Depp fan in general, but he really makes these movies with his character's quirkiness. It's ridiculous action to the eXtreme in this one but Jerry Bruckheimer produces nothing but Grade A over the top action and I love it. I know how unbelievable, improbable, and oftentimes downright impossible it all is, but I'm not going to the theater to see an accurate depiction of events, I'm going to see a fun action movie with a smattering of bad humor.
Maybe I'm getting old and becoming one of the "dumb" movie-going crowd, though. I felt the early blacksmith fight sequence in the first movie was too much.. But the waterwheel in the second one? Not really. I guess I didn't know what to expect out the first, and then they throw that goofy action sequence in.. It kind of threw me for a loop, but once the tone was set I was able to settle into the style. And with this second installment, I was prepared for the wackiness. It certainly delivered in that department.

Hey, Batteries Not Included was a decent movie. Robot-flying saucers from outer space who single-handedly save an apartment building and its tenants from eviction, rebuild the building, cook cheeseburgers all day in the diner, and teach the local ruffian not to fear the unknown makes for damn fine cinema.

Sequals were planned? Where would the series go? Would it be the same Bruce Willis character? I'm one of the few people on this earth that actually liked the movie.

I can definitely recommend Monster House. It's got the type of writing, knowledge of how kids really behave, and horror (think Gremlins) that he's good at. It's the Pixar movie they should have made instead of Cars. Also, see it in 3D if they're playing it that way near you.

Unbreakable sequals?!? Wha WHa Wha?!? I never heard of Unbreakable being a part of a planned trilogy. That would of been well received by me. Like I said it's in my opinoin the best super-hero movie. (I would say comic movie, but there no comic.) The mood, realistic stylized offerings, well written, and good acting. M. Night has since flushed himself down a toilet IMO. Although how the hell is Mr. Glass going to get out of jail. Although without the need to continue looking for Unbreakable, he shouldn't be evil anymore though. Crazy.

I think he would still be evil. That was the point was that he was the master mind villian and he was looking for the hero. Just because he found the hero doesnt mean he will stop being the villian, that would defeat the purpose.
And I'm sad to see that there are so few Signs fans around here. :(

It was almost like he was looking for a justification for being evil. Now that he's found the superhero, it is quite alright for him to indulge in villainy.
I really liked that movie. I'm sick of the way every one of his movies has this wierd plot reversal about 90% of the way through, though. Oh wow, you threw us a curve again. Not like we didn't see one coming. Its almost like I don't give a shit about the movie, I just want to see how he spins it this time.
Hmm, clerks II. Wish they'd picked a different actress. So annoying in 25th Hour and Sin City, don't think I can take anymore.

Superman is a good movie, but it is a great movie if you see it in IMAX. I went to one of the early screenings (10:00 PM the day before it came out, I'm used to midnight, but sure I will see it 2 hours earlier) at an IMAX and it kicked ass. The following weekend I saw it at a regular theater.
The 3-D and awesome sound of the IMAX make a big difference. It's not cheesy 3-D, either. It's the quality of 3-D that you get from Disneyland on Honey, I Shrunk the Audience and at Universal Studios on the Terminator 3-D attraction. High quality stuff.
As for Little Man, I haven't seen it, but everybody I know has the same thing to say about it, "Surprisingly funny." They all have mentioned how it looked stupid in the commercials, but somebody made them go see it, and they are glad they did. I can wait for DVD, but now I might watch it, unlike White Chicks, in which the same people told me to stay away after they saw it.

I know that. I mean the merchandise plan with Superman is huge. What with the game, the toys, the apparel. It's huge. But in terms of domestic box office recipt, it didn't do as well as everyone hoped. $176 million to date is a great figure, but with a budget somewhere in the region of $200-250 million, and the newest Superman movie in 20 years, it underperformed. Worldwide Box Office should cover the cost, but I think Warner Brothers were hoping the domestic would cover most of it.
Of course it will get a sequel, it's fucking Superman. But at the same cost? With Singer? I dunno....

I highly doubt that most of the people who haven't seen Superman (and that's a LOT of people) are just going to buy it outright on DVD. ;)
I was dragged to You, Me, and Dupree last week. I suffered mild brain damage but nothing serious. I also checked out Superman Returns this weekend and enjoyed it. Nothing groundbreaking, but an enjoyable flick nonetheless. Brandon Routh is hot - very much worth the $5 I spent. Parker Posie was very funny as well.
I can't wait to see Monster House - hopefully sometime in the next few weeks.

No. But a bunch of patsies all banded together when a magical, external force came into their lives and made them all realize what a shithole they lived in (as if it didn't occur to them beforehand). So they all banded together to help said external force. The shot just reminds me of them all standing around like a bunch of dopes.
