Thanks to the failures of Final Fantasy XIV (http://www.1up.com/games/pc/final-fantasy-xiv/), Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada feels the Final Fantasy brand has taken a significant hit.
It's now been more than a year since FFXIV was released. The response was quite negative (http://www.1up.com/reviews/final-fantasy-xiv-review) at the time, and with good reason: the game simply was not released in a state where gamers could be reasonably expected to fork over $15 to play each month. Square Enix did what it could, vowing to bring the game up to par and temporarily suspending (http://www.1up.com/news/final-fantasy-xiv-extending-trial) subscription fees -- a move that remains in effect to this day.
Wada apologized for "failing to meet customers' expectations" last year; producer Hiromichi Tanaka did the same but also resigned (http://www.1up.com/news/final-fantasy-xiv-ps3-postponed). A great deal of the game's development staff were replaced at that time and the PlayStation 3 version was indefinitely delayed until the PC version could be fixed -- or, as the new director Naoki Yoshida put it, until "the best adventure and service could be provided" to players.
