Ubisoft has been strangely tight-lipped during Splinter Cell: Double Agent's development cycle, at least when it comes to their well recieved and critically acclaimed multiplayer mode, Spies vs. Mercenaries. Luckily for Splinter Cell fans, two videos have emerged from the Official Double Agent Message Boards (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2771048463/m/3291073564) containing basic run-downs of gameplay for the next-gen leap into stealth-action multiplayer. Credit goes to the original poster there, signb.

Videos for both the spies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9_DreB5AjM) and mercenaries (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4Z2fryqrtQ) have been uploaded to YouTube (www.youtube.com) for those who wish to skip the rapidshare downloads.

Looks good except for the stupid floating outlines showing you what moves can be done.

The only thing I didn't really like... c'mon fucking BULLET TIME? Wasn't that shit deemed dead back in '99?

Other than that, I concur with Bootsy.

Looks really awesome. Still pissed that the spies no longer can kill, they were already really bad at it.

The outlines will be replacing the motion tracking video. They don't appear if the spy is crouched. As for bullet time, I'm 99.999999% sure that it isn't in the game, it was just something they were doing to enhance the video.

What's the point in being that sure, without saying that you're "Absolutely positive...beyond a shadow of a doubt"

Really.

Really.Spoilsport. Seriously though, while Ubisoft has been pretty quiet, a few things have slipped here and there. If something like bullet-time was being added, that would be a HUGE change, and it would be one of the first announcements about it.

Also, I'd like to point out that anyone who is really interested in this game should definitely take a look at the Splinter Cell boards, specifically the thread linked to from this news post. There are several people basically going frame-by-frame through this videos to point out every little new detail.

Spies can wirelessly hack Merc's vision as well, and apparently, according to one of these frame-by-frame anaylists, at one point in the video the spy hacks the mercs visor, DISABLING the proximity detector (the circles at the bottom centre of the screen). The length at which its disabled for we don't know yet. This definitely helps out spies, and I'm glad to see the mercs won't entirely reign over the spies. A game like this requres delicate balancing.

Did anyone else mentally scream "FATALITY!" when the Merc did the head-butt finishing move?

Anyway, the spy's acrobatic moves look awesome... reminds me of the stealth assassins from FEAR, except not quite as scripted.

Got to laugh at that poor Merc trying to aim with a gamepad. It's just painful.

I should never have started this.

It's probably a training level.

I'd say the outline stuff would probably be a tutorial thing. And that looks freaking amazing. Bullet time? Maybe as an option. It could be cool, and it could ruin it.

You can't have one player in bullet time and the other in real time and expect it to work.

Cept for some shiny textures, the game engine looks exactly like SC:CT versus mode.
Plus sound has been reused, and still only used sparsly.
I can tell we'll still get the same problems on the PC, that have been around since Pandora Tomorrow. Blocky shadows, messed up EAX, dodgy movement etc.

Wow, you can tell all of that from a movie of a game that's not even finished yet? How perceptive.

Having played it alot on the previous versions, yes... Not to mention the fact that videos released to showcase multiplayer in PT and CT, are just like this one. Showcasing all the moves, but hiding all the little details.

Also, it was said to be very different from CT Versus mode, but this looks exatcly like it. Just with a predator arm thingy, instead of a gun.

The-Builder, are we watching the same videos here? This looks a hell of a lot better than Chaos Theory's versus mode, which was still running on the Pandora Tomorrow SvM graphics. As for gameplay, it looks pretty different. Mercs have grappling hooks to climb down levels quickly, spies no longer have shocker guns (eliminating sticky cams, I guess), there are outlines around running spies, mercs have drones that follow spies into vents, spies have special escape moves, and the whole game seems to be at a faster pace.

As for people complaining about the outlines, no, its not in a training level. That is your MOTION TRACKING. IT IS IN THE GAME. Personally I think it works well, as the motion tracking in Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory also doubled as night vision (it inverted everything and then just turned it red), and mercs aren't supposed to have night vision. As I've said before it doesn't work when a spy is crouched.

Well, for one thing all light sources can be turned off, which is a big deal. Second, spies no long have a sticky shocker gun, I'm sure you'd agree that this change alone will really affect the dynamics of the game. Plus, the mercs have had a total overhaul: no more sound detector, motion sensor is built into the standard visor, EMF requires you to stand still, and the gun is quite different. Throw in the drone and the rapelling and I'd say that quite a lot has changed.

Spies are even nimbler than before, traversing a ledge while hanging is much faster, and it looks like you auto climb over most obsticles. With the sound detector gone, you've got total freedom to run so long as you're not in the merc's field of view, which will definitely quicken the pace of matches.

The sticky shocker was really annoying, so I'm happy they took it out. The drone on the other hand is very welcome. Let's just hope they make sure you can adjust the right stick sensitivity this time.

I think that the sensitivity has always been set for "balance" purposes. As far as the drone goes, it seems a bit gimpy. Tossing a frag into the vent always worked fine for me.

I think they're talking about the silhouettes showing the spy what he can do at the beginning of the movie, not the motion-tracker for the merc.

It is hard to say from the low resolution, but graphically it doesn't look any better then Chaos Theory to me, which is to say it looks fantastic.

Yeah, I agree that these videos have no grounds from what we'll be actually seeing when we play. This is some good multiplayer action, and I don't see us being let down at all. I'm excited....but, console or PC version?

Food Nipple

Has to be the console version, you can see a "b" button icon above the ghost image of a spy where he needs to crouch.

I have the high-res videos, but Ubisoft pulled the thread on these videos. Putting them on YouTube obviously looks craptastic, but at a higher-res I assure you it looks better then Chaos Theory.
