View Full Version : More Games That Need Sequels

Last month FiringSquad had a feature article on games that we thought need sequels. Now we have a follow up article that looks at even more games that we want follow ups to, this time in genres like shooters, racing games, MMOPGs, RTS titles and more. Check out the article right here (http://www.firingsquad.com/features/more_games_that_need_sequels/). Here is a snip:
Clive Barker’s Undying: When we did our first article looking at first person shooters that we though we needed sequels, we missed one pretty obvious one that we are rectifying now. Clive Barker’s Undying was an excellent Unreal engine based action title from Dreamworks Interactive (later bought and renamed EALA) that used the horror writer’s ideas as a basis for a truly frightening game that had some great gameplay elements (including combining weapons and spells), impressive level design and a solid story.

Ugh. . . Man, I don't think I'll ever go back to FiringSquad. Their site is so riddled with ads that are so enmeshed with the site that I find I have to copy and paste to read any of their content.

I do not want sequels to be made because the first game was good. Sequels should be spurred by ideas, not by previous games. Just because Starcraft exists does not mean a Starcraft 2 will be good. However, if someone has ideas for an innovative RTS (or a bad ass new story line for single player) and believes that the Starcraft name would be fitting, then it's okay.
Kind of like Resident Evil 4 in relation to all RE's before that.

They'll never make a StarCraft 2 as long as StarCraft 1 still sells like crazy in Korea. It's their national sport, for gods sakes.
And they are kinda making a sequal to Undying with Clive Barker's Jericho.

Great article. But they kind of limit themselves to only a few genres.

But...RE4 has nothing to do with RE. The name didn't fit for any storyline or gameplay reasons. They just stuck one of their characters in there, and slapped the RE name on the front to sell copies.

And they also made a very good game to sell copies.

I liked seeing Wing Commander there, but it already had a ton of sequels (none as good as the first I thought, but I played the shit out of it when I was a kid). I thought it was kind of weird seeing Homeworld too, especially because...you know...a sequel was just released not too long ago (although the article does mention this fact). I think a better message to take from the article isn't what games need sequels, because I am in the camp that believes that there are already too many sequels, but what ideas really struck a chord with some people and should be seen in other games in the future, not just sequels. Also, the word sequels sounds kind of weird when you keep saying it in your head (random, I know).

I think thats what gspot was getting at anyways, Mozgus. The game designers had a good idea (as gspot says, "a bad ass new story line for single player") and thought it was worthy of the Resident Evil name, even though it wasnt exactly a sequel of their previous games.

Not really just that, but the over the shoulder view and new interface as well. RE has always been about fixed camera angles and gimpy controls. RE4 isn't true to the series, but the series in a new light.
And I really do think there are too many sequels. Games that were good, but shouldn't be series, such as GT and Halo. I don't count MGS and Splinter cell because it is basically just adding storylines to an interesting character in an interesting setting.
There really shouldn't be a Halo 3.

What's wrong with giving people more of what they like? Clearly, there is a demand for more Halo. You can't just tell a developer to stop producing their biggest money maker for no other reason then because it's a sequal. Yea, it would be nice if every game could be a Shadow of the Colossus but, sadly, they don't sell.

It kills innovation and waters down a franchise until it is worthless.

Supercars II on the Amiga, that would be a great multiplayer game today.

Yeah I agree a 100% on a Psi-Ops sequel. It's implementation of telekenesis was way better than Half-Life 2's gravity gun. Great gameplay hindered by a pedestrian story and characters (and a great argument against the ideat that story isn't important in video games). The developers themselves even said it would work really well with the Wii controller. I'd imagine even the new PS3 controller with it's motion sensors would be a lot of fun with a Psi-Ops type game to. I think a sequel would work if they took the Final Fantasy approach and the sequel used a completely new setting and characters, but kept the gameplay approach.
And Bushido Blade, I'd like to see a next gen Bushido Blade.

I can't think of any games at the moment that need sequels, but I can think of a heckuva lot of games that should have never had them at all...and are on their -nth iteration :(

So, by your logic, Matrix 2 and 3 were good ideas?
I know they make money, but that doesn't make them good ideas.

Well, if Halo 2 and 3 ruin the cool sci-fi premises made in the original game like Matrix 2 and 3 did the original film, then obviously that would suck.
In truth, there are many movie sequels that are great. Just as there are many videogame sequels that are great, and the poster you were contradicting is correct that giving people sequels when they want sequels not only makes fiscal sense, but it is also entertains the majority of people.
Of course, as you pointed out, the sequels have to not ruin the premises that made the original enjoyable. :)

QFT! Freespace 2 was one of the best games I've ever played. I so want a new space flight sim. Another TIE Fighter would be awesome too. TIE Fighter is the game that made me a gamer.

Speaking of space flight sims. X3: Reunion now up on Steam. And the best news is... wait for it... NO STARFORCE!

They were good ideas to the studio that made them. Yes, there are better movies but many great films don't have mass appeal.

I played the demo. . . It controlled like ass. Worst UI I've seen in a decade. They seemed to purposefully make it unfriendly.

MediEvil for the PlayStation! I loved that game, and they made one sequel but I only rented it. I think we need a next-gen sequel to that one :p
I think we do need a Halo 3. The storyline is pretty cool, but a little repetitive in the fact that the Arbiter missions were uncovering the same truths that the Master Chief uncovered in Halo 1. But there was enough other stuff in the story to make the game great. My only real beef with Halo 2 was the n00bification of it (lock-on-and-1-hit-vehicle-killing rockets, the ungodly tracking on the plasma pistol, the terrible balancing of the sword in multiplayer, the shotgun being nerfed completely so that sword whores could run wild, the vehicle health system).
Now that I think of it, it seems like I have more issues with it than I thought, though it's still the game I've played most on Xbox Live.

I said something similar (http://toybane.com/?p=95) back in May, craving more games like Undying. I don't think a sequel would be prudent, but something similar, a spiritual sequel if you will, would be great.

Welcome back, Kelegacy! Where you been?
Hospital and then bed rest. Broken sternum, fractured femur and some internal injuries after a jujutsu championship I was in a week or so back. I placed third because I couldn't fight in the last round, even though I won the match I garnered all those injuries.
I'm getting old, mayhaps. My black belt is getting rust-colored.

I couldn't care less for most of those games, but can you imagine a sequel to Ultima Online?? That would be amazing with something like the Unreal 3 engine. I've played a lot of mmorpg's in my time, and I have to say that UO is still the gameplay winner. I can't even imagine playing that game with a next-gen graphics engine with all the bells and whistles.
