View Full Version : Possible Good News for Sony & Blu-ray?

With all the bad news coming Sony's way lately, it's no wonder that this little bit of information fell through the cracks - Blu-ray could very well be the dominant format because of the same reason VHS won back in the day: the porn industry.
Wagner said that while attending last year’s National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) annual conference in Las Vegas, more than one panel discussed “several major players in the porn industry going the Blu-ray route.” He said the Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD rivalry was also the buzz around NAB 2006 last month.

Funny how in the end, it all comes down to porn. (No pun intended.)

Perhaps, but quite frankly I think the internet has already taken that area of the economy over.

Didn't porn go out on UMD for the PSP? (I seem to remember reading about that)...if so, it certainly hasn't saved that format, which is dying off pretty substantially.

You would think it would take off....because right there is the definition of 'hand-held'.

I believe that was only in Japan though. Tombofsoldier has a good point though. This definitely won't hurt Sony, but it won't help it as much as porn helped VHS.

I don't think it'll play a significant role, hasn't the porn industry moved past physical formats and towards download on demand?

What? Porn? I don't know, nowadays if people want to get porn they just need to download some tens of thousands floating freely in some bittorrent sites.

Last time I checked, VHS was the only choice for porn, now the internet is number one of 5,374 choices.

Tell that to the people with shelves full of multi-angle DVDs. And your local DVD rental store.

uh I dont think the porn industry is ready to go HD, a lot of major porn companies are still dealing in VHS only. Its gonna be 5 years till porn is standardly released in HD (either HD-DVD or Blue)

Dude, have you ever been to a video place that has a porn section? EVERYTHING is available in DVD these days.
Not that I'd necessarily want to see some of these porn stars' naughty bits in high definition... in fact, it makes me kind of queasy.

Funny thought, and although true in the past I really don't think it's going to push Blu-ray very far. It might help it a little bit in the beginning, but then I think it'll die off after a little while (a year?).

I doubt there ever will be HD porn, (heck, most DVDs are nothing but quick and sloppy VHS rips) if anything you'll have a 20 hour compilation of VHS quality porn on one handy disc.

At least with a compilation of a few standard DVD's, there's the chance you can keep one or two of them... not sticky..

I think that the question of which format will win is the wrong question. The right question is: do we NEED higher def porn? What is the market for HD-porn? Is there really a demand for this?
The last time I checked, an progressively scanned DVD was not that different looking than HD.
<looks>
Nope.
Still almost no difference....

What benefits of Blu-ray could possibly help the porn industry? That's where I'm confused.

Actually, apparently hi-def porn looks worse (http://hardware.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=189590&cid=15610796).
I've seen a few other postings with similar reports to this: high-definition porn is not a good thing.
I imagine a number of HD-DVD and Bluray players are going to returned (with "there's something 'wrong' with the picture" if asked why) after the first time they are used. :p

Digital Underground has been shooting all their stuff in HD since 2004. They've released a couple of titles as DVD/WMV-HD hybrids (in other words, there's an HD version on the DVD you can view on a PC or one of the tiny handful of set-top players that support WMV-HD). Vivid's shot some HD productions as well. It'll be at least a few years before the smaller guys switch to HD, but the majors have been HD-ready for awhile now.

Porn is good no matter what formats it's on, but 50GB of porn is awesome. More porn, the better!

Maybe your TV sucks big time?!?! When I watch lets say Spiderman 2 on a pay tv channel in HD and compare it to the upscaled picture of my Denon DVD 3910 I say there is a huge difference. HD looks a lot crsiper.

You do realize that the picture is likely coming from the same source, right? A DVD?
Just that the upscalers that TV studios have are pretty superior to the ones in your standard TVs or upscaling players. Sad part is, a lot of Blue Ray disks are going to be upscaled DVDs, and not true HD anyway.
In general for me, I still run 480p for my DVDs, and the upscaling done by my TV looks very similar to the same thing on my HD channels.
Now Football and Hockey on the other hand.... different ballpark. =-) True HD source, True HD signal = True HD goodness.

Two comments:
1) No TV network outside the occasional underfunded local station uses DVD masters, not even for standard-def content. It's not a broadcast format.
2) There's no reason to doubt the Spider-Man 2 airing he saw was HD-sourced -- Sony's been doing native HD masters for every new film they've released since the late '90s. Upconverted stuff is still all-too-common on the "HD" channels (which are heavily compressed to boot, meaning even true HD programming will typically look worse than an HD DVD or Blu-ray disc), but Spider-Man 2 has most definitely been aired in a "true HD" version. Unfortunately it's been changed from 2.35:1 to a "16x9-friendly" 1.78:1, which is really an even bigger problem right now than the use of upconverted masters -- it's nothing less than the HD equivalent of pan-and-scan, and it needs to be stopped before it affects Blu-ray and HD DVD as well (it hasn't so far, but it's only a matter of time).

I don't see how Blu-Ray will be helped by porn:
-The VHS was helped by porn because people could easily get it into their home, before it was nearly impossible and way too expensive.
-The dvd made a huge difference in picture quality. The other huge boost of dvd was the fact it allowed you to jump to any scene at anytime. Plus there was no rewinding.
The advantages of Blu-Ray:
-Larger capacity
-A slight upgrade in picture quality
Since the costs will be more than a dvd I don't see a huge advantage to move formats. A content provider will have to cram a lot more into a Blu-Ray to take advantage of the space, but that will cost them extra money as well. Would it make sense to compile a series onto one disk instead of selling multiple disks to make more money. Time will tell.
But, porn wont make this such a huge seller. Porn is now much easier to access via a pc. Back when a physical format was the only way to get porn, it had a huge impact on VHS and DVD. But I'm not so sure it will be a major player in this format war. Blu-Ray will have to give regular movies something special to get me to buy it. The only reason for me to buy a PS3 in the next year would be to Ebay it.
