View Full Version : Oblivion coming to the PS3?

Once again the rumor has emerged from Gamestop (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1&product%5Fid=270036)/Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6154402.html).
The source of the rumors, a poster on the Gaming Age Forums, said the information came from a Bethesda Softworks release schedule that listed both the PS3 and PSP editions of Oblivion and gave a November 6 release date for them. Those rumors are about to get another burst of momentum, as GameStop has updated its retail site with a product page for a PS3 version of Oblivion. GameStop is taking preorders for the game with a very familiar expected shipping date of November 6. Sadly, the retailer's site is still devoid of any mention of Oblivion for the PSP.

You two summed it up. No way I'd play it on the PSP. Although I hope if the PS3 is everything Sony says it is Oblivion will look even better

Let's say they do release it on PS3..I would be curious to know what they will do with the downloadable content? Do they bundle it into the whole game or also make it pay-per-play ala the PC and 360? I know squat about the PS3 online model (will they even have some kind of marketplace?) so am curious.

I thought the PC version's updates were free-per-play.

This is good news for future PS3 owners if it's true. I would expect it to run a little better than the 360 version because of the additional development time but then again who knows how hard it is to convert everything to use the Cell.

Maybe the PSP version will be kind of an Oblivion companion? Not the full game but rather something to run alongside a Single Player experience instead?

This was already addressed, but not fully explained. As an ex EB employee, I can 100% confirm the ability to preorder games that don't exist. The company invents a SKU for the product, and an aribitrary release date. Now, they can take all your money for pre-orders. But what happens if the game does not release? They'll just move your preorder to another game, do some sort of store credit, or (if properly motivated) give you a refund.

No the official mods cost money on the PC as well.

This was debunked a long time ago. 2k may have given retailers a phantom SKU, but Bethesda is most definitely not working on this game.

The PS3 supports microtransations -"Five hundred and ninety-nine US dollars"- so you'll be buying them the same as on PC and 360.

Oblivion for the PSP? Thats the funniest damned thing I've ever heard. Wonder how much money they spent converting the shaders to OpenGl 2.0 and the programming to stuff that would work on the Cell. If this rumor is true I label MS with a giant Dumbass tag for not getting TES to be XBox exclusive.

A friend at Ubisoft tells me they are publishing the PS3 version in Europe. That would seem to suggest that such a version does indeed exist. When it comes out is another question.

Chances are if it's true, I'd most likely pass it up. As much as I enjoyed Oblivion on the 360, unless the orginal problems are fixed by the Cell's magic, and a ton of content is added to justify buying the same game again, um....no thank you.

And The PS3 version will be better probably than the 360 version. And people will hail it as the reason ps3 is better, even though it has more to do with the code being far more stable.

The Cell has as much magic in it as the Emotion Engine has actual emotion in it.
The Cell was named as such because it is a technological prison, for Sony.

*I cannot see why they would not release on the PS3; it cannot be that hard to port, and they will prolly sell quite a few copies. Now, the PSP version, I am guessing, will be more like the Morrowind version for cellphones that came out a couple of years ago, more like a typical lite RPG set in the same world.

That's a fairly naive assessment of the situation. While porting from Xbox 360 to PS3 is easier than a port from Xbox 360 to something less comparable in power, I'd hesitate to say that it's easy. Porting from Xbox 360 to PS3 is a non-trivial amount of work.

When Sony use the four dimensional power of the PS3 to travel back in time and not say all the bullshit that came with the Emotion Engine, then they can stop being called out on it.

I hope that what this means is a GC + GBA combo type game. Oblivion for PSP & PS3 combined would be freakn sweet. As long as Bethesda introduces enhancements and newer gameplay, I'm all for it. THe game (PC/360) is extremely monotonous (dungeon crawl) after a while, so I couldn't see what the point would be to do just a straight port to PS3. Fans of the series has already got their hands on a PC/360 version and the target consumer of the PS3 version is the exact same audience. I for one wouldn't buy it if it was just a straight port....what's the point?

I call you on your BULLSHIT (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/15/xbox-360-dev-ps3-ports-to-be-reasonably-difficult/).
In a recent (and very interesting) Ars Technica interview, Xbox 360 developer Matt Lee points out that porting games between the two systems might be a tad tricky. "I think porting from Xbox 360 to PS3 will be reasonably difficult, since the Xbox 360 has a lot more general purpose processing power that can be flexibly reallocated, and all of the Xbox 360 CPU cores have equal access to all memory. The asymmetric nature of the Cell could easily lead to situations where the game has too little of one type of processing power and too much of another."

Yes, they could use the PSP to show a map or the inventory screen.
As with GC/GBA connectivity, I wouldn't expect to much, especially since there's no need for a rearviewmirror in Oblivion.

I can see Oblivion for the PS3. I mean it's done so well on the 360 and the PC, they may aswell see if the Sony fans want a taste. But for the PSP? Maybe not as a game, but as something. But would anyone really pay £30 for something to do with a game that isn't actually a game? I doubt it. But some connectivity could be used. Something not unlike Crytsal Chronicles with GBA.

I'm really not quite sure what "bullshit" you are calling me on. The article that you link generally agrees with my statement. It's not a trivial amount of work to port between the two as the original post that I quoted implied.
My comment was that at least you have some baseline functionality like memory sizes, general processing equivalencies, and graphics capabilities shared between PS3 and the Xbox 360 as opposed to the implication in the original post that Xbox 360 to PS3 would be really easy but PSP would be hard. They would both be hard. In my opinion, PSP would be harder because not only would you have to rework the engine, but you'd have to rework all the art assets. At least going from Xbox 360 to PS3, you can generally reuse assets.
Apologies if there was confusion.
