IGN (http://xbox360.ign.com/) has some hands on impressions (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/720/720044p1.html) with a near final build of Dead Rising for the XBox 360. It was only after Case 4 that we realized how valuable it was. While wandering around the mall we discovered a strange group of cult members near the mall's movie theatre. They seemed to be perfectly human, but were wearing some rather strange clothing. Dressed in bright yellow hooded robes, the cult members were even more visually striking for the green goblin-like masks they wore. Instead of shambling aimlessly about and flailing stupidly when we walked by, these members were entirely focused on our destruction. When we accidentally stumbled upon a congregation we found them on the verge of sacrificing a pretty woman. Being a photojournalist, a profession widely revered as the last bastion of Medieval chivalry, we were compelled to rush to her defense.
There are also some new screens and videos.
Release Date: August 9th
Boss battles? That's a pretty cool idea. This game just looks better and better.

Cannot wait for this, it looks great in every way, and most important it's coming out when I can afford it :D

You know, back when they first started showing screenshots of this a year and a half ago, I thought this game would NEVER see the light of day. An original IP, zombie, pseudo-sandbox game just sounded too good but unmarketable. Now it's nearly out and there's heaps of excitement surrounding it. This gives me hope for the future. :D

This sounds too damned cool....
Leveling boosts health, inventory space, attack power, throwing power, and bestows new zombie mashing techniques. These boons aren't granted all at the same time. Generally it seemed two or three of those qualities was bolstered with each level ascension. Should players wish to buff themselves in between levels, the bookstores around the mall are an excellent diversion. By holding a book in an inventory slot, Frank is blessed with abilities like extra skill with certain weapons, allowing them to go longer without breaking. For the batch of HD videos we took, we were equipped with a book that alerted us to when opportunities for photos were most ripe. We'll go into further detail in a feature tomorrow, but the book is what accounts for the floating icons above the zombies' heads.
Leveling up and books for skills in a beat em up game reminds me of River City Ransom, one of my favorite games of all time. God this game cant come fast enough.

The closer this one gets to being released, the more interested I have become.

In the latest promo video (helicopter intro sequence), the game showed incredible amount of facial details. It could literally rival or even surpass the facial animation from MGS4.

Fricking impressive. And is it just me or has IGN started sucking slightly less?

I want to play this game, badly, and I'm happy as heck it's coming out so soon...
But how on Earth are boss battles an 'idea', much less a pretty cool one?
They've been around awhile, you know.

This game is looking really fun, and sounds more polished than I thought it would. I just hope there is going to be a mode where the game doesn't end if you skip one of the cases. A zombie sandbox game without strict objectives seems like a perfect party game: hand the controller off and see what crazy things the next person can do, and for how long.
I also like how the previewer in one paragraph talks about being a weathered, jaded game journalist, but he apparently thinks he's running around with a LEGO character's head as a mask. I haven't played a Megaman game since the SNES and even I get the Capcom reference to Servbots. That's just one more blow to IGN's credibility.

From what I read, after you complete the game you can play it basically indefinitely. If I recall, one of the achievements is to out-survive all the other NPCs (lasting a week).

Nah, they still suck. Even shitty news sources are going to be tolerable from time to time. Well... except EGM that is, they always suck. Oh, and Play magazine.

Yeah, I saw one of the achievements was to last for 7 game days. If you're right, then that's probably the best way for the developers to increase the game's replayability. In my mind, this is money in the bank for Capcom.

That game was so damn fantastic. And I had some of the same thoughts when I heard about the levels. I cannot wait for this game.

I love how the books apparently work. They remind me of the charms in DiabloII where you have to choose between a larger inventory, or buffed skills. The RPG elements of Dead Rising sound like they're going to be a solid aspect of the game, and not just tacked on. I also like how you have to get batteries from a store, and keep yourself fed and watered. It sounds like it'll add to the realism factor without hindering gameplay.
Is anyone else less excited about this after reading the preview? There's some cool stuff there, but the whole time limit and forced missions thing really sucks. I hate it when games shove that kind of stuff down your throat, especially when they're billed as sandbox games.
Oh well, I'll probably still get it either way. I need something different to play on my 360.

I actually don't mind time limits, keeps me focused and increases challenge :)

All you have to do is play through once, and you unlock the indefinite mode. No time limits, just free flowing killing.
The whole time thing is critical to the way they tell the story, from my understanding of it.

Looks so awesome.
If you watch one of the videos they have on there labled "Best picture ever" or something along those lines...
He throws a bouncy ball machine into a crowd of 50 zombies and they all fall down and then takes a picture for MASSIVE DAMAGE... or lots of experience.
Funny to see nevertheless...

This game looks awesome, but the lack of co-op is a crime against humanity. Well, the part of humanity that plays games anyway.

Their recent 360 NCAA 07 review was probably the best review I have seen out of IGN.

Great videos they have posted. The part where he grabs the parasol and mows down like 50 zombies is hilarious. I was on the fence with this game, but its looking better and better to me, especially with the whole survival achievement. So many ways to kill zombies. Amazing :)
