Red Orchestra is getting a booster pack (http://www.redorchestragame.com/). But don't despair: unlike the fragmentory Battlefield 2 packs, this one is going to be free, like the birds. The most notable changes include: Brand new map - "Lyes Krovy". This is a brutal close-quarters fight for a German trench-and-bunker position in a forest in northern Russia, in the summer of 1944.
Brand new weapon system - smoke grenades.
Tank reloading: we've listened to the requests and we have changed the tank reloading so that you now choose the next round to load, without having to unload first.
Streamlined and enhanced some interface functionality to make it easier for new players to get into the game.
Loads of other useful fixes and additions! (http://www.redorchestragame.com/forum/showpost.php?p=158659&postcount=3)What's more, the pack will be release on Steam in just one week, on July 27th.

Is the Mod getting an update too or only the pay-to-play version?

This sounds like the retail, I don't think the mod comes on steam(And I'm guessing they've given up on it since the retail release like the Ship people have).

I play way too much DoD:Source, but have wanted to try this ever since I played the mod a while back. It looks like its really worth getting now.

OT: Has Valve improved the map selection any since the update that added the Kalt remake? I haven't played since then and it was fun, but map selection was still the game's weakest point. God, I've wasted so much time on old school DoD since beta 2.0 that it's not even funny. ;-)

On topic, I may need to think about finally picking up a copy of RO. I haven't played it since the mod's early days, but it was fun the few times I did.

I'm still upset at the lack of the old fun maps, like Caen, but the new ones are very good. One is where each side can plant bombs on the other teams targets, the other map makes the Allies defend a few objects while the Germans try to plant bombs on them. Each successfull item blown up(it takes 2 per object)adds 2 minutes to the timer for the Germans to get the rest of the objectives.

For all you thinking about getting RO, do it. It's really fun and much more polished than the mod ever was.

The only downside to RO is the players... or lack of. There are usually only about 13 servers with any one playing (out of 300+) and it can be hard to get into any of the servers with a lot of players.
When it was first released it had plenty of full servers but within a couple months they just dwindled off (much like the mod).

Hopefully this booster pack will bring some people back, or get some new people.
Smoke grenades will be awesome! (and actually really useful).

What sort of question is that?

speaking of mods, does anyone know if forgotten hope 2 ever came out? That's the only reason i'd ever bother getting BF2.

That sort of monetary fixation is exactly what I was trying to get at...

I know what you mean, but the fixation obviously exists on both sides, since you have to pay for the mod now. Who is really fixated on money when you look at it that way?

Doesn't matter to me, I haven't played it and never will. Can't spend money on a mod with so few players.

So its better than the BF2 booster packs because its Free? From what people are saying here, its free because there's no one playing the original, and no one to buy it. (Exageration added for emphasis) Besides, this is 1 map and 1 weapon, where as the BF2 booster packs have been 3 maps, up to 7 weapons, and 4 to 6 vehicles. The up coming (already in public beta) 1.4 BF2 patch adds the 2nd free map (Wake Island and Road to Jalalabad) and also adds a new Infantry Only mode to the game. Other patches have added things like the vehicle drop, etc.

So there's less in this RO booster patch, but hey... Its Free!

A group of people wanting to spend their lives doing what they love require money to live. Charging a measly twenty-five dollars for their work and investment is a practicality, not a fixation. Complaining about it on the other hand very much is.
