This is pretty awesome. TheUnknownSoldier emailed me to let me know that twistedsymphony (a moderator over at the Xbox-Scene (http://www.xbox-scene.com/) forums) has come up with a way to use an unmodified SEGA Saturn controller on his Xbox 360.

Check out both the controller and a video showing it's capabilities here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiP0WLx7V7Q).

The V1 Prototype of the Sat-2-360 Controller Adapter is now finished after two and a half months. The intent of the adapter was to be able to use a completely unmodified Sega Saturn controller to play Xbox 360 Games. More specifically I wanted a good 2D gamepad to play upcoming Xbox Live Arcade titles such as Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Thankfully I was able to complete my adapter before either of the game have been release... so I'll be ready. The adapter accomplishes everything I set out to do and then some. Seeing as I used a Wireless Xbox 360 controller the whole adapter is wireless and runs on batteries.
I loved how the Saturn controller performed in fighting games.

Now if we could get the Saturn's music player on the 360. Seriously, that thing was years ahead of it's time.

wasn't the saturn controller universally regarded as a piece of junk? I may hate sony, but give me a ps1 controller for fighting games any day...

I liked it, but only for fighting games.

I just mainly remember it being really rickity and, as someone with big hands, feeling like I was holding something made for a 6 year old girl.

Yeah, it felt like I was playing Chu Chu Rocket with a tiny barbie house on a wire.

You're insane, the Dreamcast Controllers were the worst for fighting games. Give me the Saturn Controller anyday. It was perfect for SF and games like it.

No. The original US saturn controller sucked... it was basically the "Duke" for the Saturn. Then Sega wised up and released the totally awesome Japanese pad in America, which rocks - especially for fighters.

Ok, fine. I should have said arcade stick.

It's pretty cool how Sega used to be better than Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

I just wish the 360 would recognize an X-Arcade stick. I've got the USB adapter......why can't I use it on my XBOX360???

:(

...while I'm here, I'll throw my two cents in too...

The Genesis 6-button pad was great, the US Saturn pad was frail, any pad without 6 face buttons sucks because you can't play any Capcom fighters, the Dreamcast joystick was too clicky, the X-Arcade is the best stick around.....but the best pad was definately the ASCII Dreamcast Fighting Pad (which was a ripoff the japanese saturn pad).

I never knew that. My friend had a Japanese Saturn (and the 4-meg ram cart) so that's what I was used to using.

Sega's consoles wasn't ever really given the opportunity to be better than Sony or Microsoft....or even Nintendo.

I think it might be time for Sega to re-enter the console wars. Sony and Microsoft have some screwed view of video games and Nintendo's console is looking more and more like a gimmick.

They don't have the money or support to launch a new platform. Sure, they still have a lot of fanboys, but they need more than that.

The Japanese Saturn controller and the 6-button Sega controller were some of the best controllers ever made. People could take a lesson or two, when it comes to D-pad implementation.

You're an idiot. I'm sorry, I'm in a bad mood, I shouldn't be mean, but do you really think that would be a good idea? Sega has no money, no backing, a few crappy original IPs, and a horrible track record with game consoles. No one would back them, no one would buy one, they'd go bankrupt for good this time, and their crappy games that they feel the need to continue making would cease to exist.

Wait, maybe I'm on to something there. We wont ever have to see another shitty Sonic game if they go down in flames! Somehow, I doubt that will ever happen though.

You also have to remember that Sega barely makes money producing a few games each year. They dont have the backing that Microsoft, Sony, or even Nintendo do for a console launch, especially not an international one.

6 Buttons and a nice feel in your hands.

Some of you guys are confusing the crappy original U.S. Saturn controller with the Japanese smaller Saturn controller. The Japanese controller was awesome: slim, compact and incredibly responsive. Later in the Saturn's life, Sega ditched the U.S. version altogether and started packaging the Saturn only with the Japanese model (much like MS with the S-controller). No controller beats the J-Saturn pad for Street Fighter 6-face button style games.

I think Sega is amazing, and MS is just picking up where they left off. Look at hardware designs, innovations, and games. Remember, MS is staying afloat and making those risks because they have the financial backing. And Sega did not have that. The scene was becoming mainstream, and unless you went that direction, your console would fail.

The Saturn controller sure was a great gamepad for 2D fighting games. Don't get that confused with the 3D controller(or like Dan said, the earlier version) that was released later. You can now pick up those Street Fighter themed gamepads that are brilliant. I use it for Gradius V on my PS2, and Metal Slug and Guilty Gear on my XBox.

Isn't it amazing how far video games have come, but how much worse d-pads have gotten? The 360 has maybe the worst I've ever used.

C'mon buddy. You've got to relax, I was just having diarrea of the brain there. It was more of an indictment of the Next Gen consoles than an endorsement of Sega.

The ASCII Version of the Jap Saturn Pad is Flimsy and not as solid as the original. The biggest highlight of the Saturn was defiantly Arcade perfect X-men vs Street Fighter. 4-meg cart really made the difference. For some reason to think about how arcade perfect those game were gives me chills

I agree that they had the best dpads for fighting games.

For street fighter, doa and soul calibur however I need a good joystick. Otherwise my fighting game capability is reduced by 40% :(

I had the stick Zeal for fighting games also. It kicked ass.

Cmon MS bring one out. Or let me use my Xbox Joystick on the 360.

Minor point, but the DC arcade stick was actually made by Agetec, not Sega.

Amen! I hate using analog sticks for selections and the like, but trying to use the 360 (or *shudder* dualshock) d-pad makes me want to die.

Isn't it amazing how far video games have come, but how much worse d-pads have gotten? The 360 has maybe the worst I've ever used. The problem is that the D-pad has largely been demoted to use in menu navigation or as an extra 4 "buttons" on the controller.

There is an official DOA4 joystick you could grab. I haven't used it myself, I'm waiting to see if X-arcade can finally get some X360 support soon.
