According to Forbes: (http://www.forbes.com/markets/feeds/afx/2006/07/18/afx2888056.html)

TAIPEI (XFN-ASIA) - Asustek Computer Inc (2357.TW) will deliver PlayStation 3 game consoles to Sony Corp this month as the Japanese firm moves to step up output to meet demand for the Christmas shopping season, the Commercial Times reported, without citing a source.

The first consignment is for 4 mln units, the report said, noting that monthly shipments will start at 200,000 units, rising to 2 mln in October.

Good news to see production is finally rolling. Maybe we'll see more PS3's at launch than expected?

Lol, when there is something positive about the PS3 noone has much to say about it.
Edit: But this is indeed good news mabe they will meet the target numbers they stated at E306.

Hardly full steam ahead....they're starting at 200,000 this month. "Full steam" would be if they were to reach that 2 million per month production in Oct.

Let's not glorify Sony so much so soon, Sirius...you'll run out of catchy praises before any real good news comes out. :)

Glad to see it's finally underway. For a while there it felt like Sony was still trying to figure out exactly what they were gonna put in the system. Now let's just hope they can get close to their predicted quota.

This IS "good news" for Sony fans. Considering all the previous news reports on "oh no, Sony not doing well!", I would say that this is good news, whether or not it's the target they were going for.

Even I can't see how one factory can do 4 million by Christmas. I call bullshit.

Where does the story say 1 factory? It's one supplier firm. Hell it's friggin ASUSTEK, one of the biggest out there. I can see a supplier like ASUS assembling 4 mil PS3's by this Christmas season. It's not like they're making every part of the console.

I'd like to see the PS3 do well, since it just means more gaming love for me, but I'm planning on picking up the Wii in '07 and probably wait until '08 for the PS3, since it isn't super impressive *yet*.

Though, I just picked up the 50" Sony Wega SXRD HDTV, which is capable of 1080p, so just maybe I'll be revising my plans...?

You do realize this TV does not accept true 1080p input eh? It only accepts 1080i and then upconverts to 1080p. The new SXRD models coming this August or Sept will be true 1080p sets. Nevertheless, the SXRD is a fantastic TV with an outstanding pq.

Me and my buddies were thinking of doing the same thing. Well, lining up at Best Buy the night before and picking a few up, and then waiting a few weeks and sell them on eBay near Christmas. Worst case scenario, there's no shortage and I have a PS3 to play.

Even I can't see how one factory can do 4 million by Christmas. I call bullshit.I kinda of expected you would have read the article:

Meanwhile the report noted that, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd (2317.TW), will soon begin making the PS3 consoles for Sony as well.

That isn't a very deep, rich or informative article though. I read it and was left wanting more details that the tiny blurb provided.

Bout time they had some positive news.
How does this jive with the possible cpu speed downgrade or the use of 6 cores only?

I'm so confused.

Shhhhh! Don't ask questions like that. That's how good news can quickly turn into bad news.

I kinda of expected you would have read the article:

Another similar article lists Foxconn Electronics as an additional manufacturer in the future.

Sounds like really good news to me. If they truly can get their 2M launch, 4M year end, and 6M Q1 2007 goals it will put them in a really good position with developers and publishers.

If they truly can get their 2M launch, 4M year end, and 6M Q1 2007 goals it will put them in a really good position with developers and publishers.Well, if they can hit their stated goals than it won't put them in a WORSE position with developers and publishers.

Lets all watch over the next few months and see how it plays out.

Sony has a history of setting expectations higher than reality proves them to be.

200k first month? That's a LOT better than I had anticipated.

200k July
400k August
800k September
1.6mil October
That makes 3 mil. Hmm. Let's do some detective work.

My guess is that they weren't predicting they would ship 2 million PER MONTH, but instead they would have shipped 2 mil total by October.

That means monthly increases of 200k units, which I think is reasonable:
200k July (200k shipped)
400k August (600k shipped)
600k September (1.2mil shipped)
800k October (2.0mil shipped)

Still, that's a good number of units if they can keep it up.

My guess is that they weren't predicting they would ship 2 million PER MONTH, but instead they would have shipped 2 mil total by October.

Their numbers at their press conference were:

2 Million by Nov 17 launch date (11th in Japan)
4 Million by year end
6 Million by end of Q1

The hard one to reach will be the 4 Million by Year end. That gives them 4 months to make 2 Million, then 1.5 months for another 2 Million, and finally 3 Months to make another 2 Million. The first and second are quite possible....the middle one...not sure. We'll see.
