According to ICv2 (http://www.icv2.com/), Star Trek: The Animated Series is coming to DVD (http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/8995.html) in the United States on November 21st.

...All 22 episodes of the cartoon Star Trek series, which appeared on NBC for two seasons (1973-1975), will be included in the 4-disk set, which will retail for $35. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry wrote some of the animated series' episodes and the cast from the original series, which appeared on NBC from 1966-1969, voiced their iconic characters in the animated version.

...Although the series did air on Saturday mornings, it was originally intended for primetime and the themes in the episodes of the animated series echo those in the rest of the Star Trek canon.

David Gerrold wrote the sequel to his classic "The Trouble With Tribbles" episode for the animated series, which boasted a strong writing staff that included D.C. Fontana, Stephen Kandel, Chuck Menville, Len Janson, and Walter Koenig (yes Chekov wrote an episode, "The Infinite Vulcan").
I vaguely remember this as a kid...

I remember seeing these, but don't remember any of the plots. I've heard people say that they were REALLY well-written, though.

But what's the point? It never needed to be a cartoon. I'm sort of interested to see it though.

Cartoons are much cheaper to make than expensive Sci-fi sets. Sci-fi no matter how successful of a show they are, tend to almost cost too much to be made.

But what's the point?

The point is it was well-written, featured the original cast (though I seem to recall a bird-like alien taking up one of the bridge seats at one point), and faithfully continued the legacy of the original series.

Seriously, check it out. It's good.

I wanted to love it, but I found myself wanting to set myself on fire. Burny.

My memory watching these as an eight year old are pretty good. Glad they're finally putting these out. Can't believe they aren't going to try and sell them for $80 though. Oh, the days when Saturday morning cartoons were good!

I remember one of the crew members having 3 arms. That's about it. Oh, also Spock got turned into a giant at one point.

the animation is typical cheapo filmation at the time, but the story, plot, and voice work is very good. Hell, I still have the novelizations of the series as done by alan dean foster lying around somewhere.

They hired science fiction writers to write some of the scripts for the animated series.

Larry Niven, my favorite author, wrote an episode, I think it was called "The Slaver Weapon".
