View Full Version : Portal (PS3/X360/PC) Trailer

To fuel the recent physics madness Valve is adding a totally new singleplayer game called Portal to Half-Life 2 Episode 2, which seems to have run away from 3D Realms' Prey. As the name indicates, this game is all about portals and its creative use to solve puzzles. The usage is quite simple as all you have to do is make an exit and entrance and walk from one end to the next. From simple obstacles as bypassing a gap in the floor, all the way to creating multiple portals to give chase to enemies and defeating turrets.

Valve has released what might be the first of a series of "Orientation" trailers to make us familiar with Portal.

In an effort to quash the Prey stuff, this is quite a bit older than that game. It was made by the team behind Narbacular drop, which is at least a year old now.

Edit: I can't help but be excited by every upload made to Steam since Valve dropped all this on us. There's something fairly hefty (http://steampowered.com/status/status.html) being placed on the content servers right now, and with this video's release and nothing else we know about upcoming...

Prey is amazing. It has so many cool moments. This short trailer shows promise, but it is hardly a Prey beater. And remember Prey will have a sequel, so they can still introduce alot of portal gameplay in the future.

It would most likely break the gameplay. The HL games are pretty linear (not a bad thing)... having a gun like that would let you completely omit parts of levels and get to places you shouldn't be able to get to.

I doubt it'll be in it.

Oh come on, you know the combine will deploy aperture defense fields over 'sensitive' structures/environments.

If they don't want you using the portal gun in some area it is very easy to script you losing the gun, the gun not working, etc. heck, they did it already with the grav gun on at least two occassions I can think of.

It looks like an interesting idea, but the proof will be in the execution, not in a concept demo.

I particularly liked using it to prevent falling damage. Slap a portal exit near the floor, slap a portal entry beneath you right before you hit. I can already see situations where you'll switch guns in midair, blow the crap out of a turret or something, then switch back to portal to save yourself.

Oh, another idea, remember that room you left way back on the map like 10 minutes ago? Yeah, the place with all the ammo you didn't need at the time but do need now. Good thing you left a portal exit back there. You can drop a portal entry now that you need the ammo and travel instantly back to the armory.

I can actually see that getting old quite quick. How many times is someone actually going to fall for something like that? If I went through a portal and and was jumped by a camper or something on the other side, I probably wouldn't go into too many more portals after that. There's probably something Valve could do to get around this, so I suppose we will have to wait and see.

Well, the trick is to be hidden, and then have the 'out' portal already set, so you fire the 'in' portal at the feet of whoever comes into the room. More of a 'surprise! You're in a portal!' kind of thing.

That's an ignorant statement. Prey is a good game in its own right. We shouldn't be bitching about the fact that Valve is doing a "better job" with this stuff. Embrace the fact that this portal tech is going to be the next big gameplay thing on PC, and stop sounding like such a moron.

Prey, while short lived, is an excellent game with a high amount of polish and quality to it. I've thoroughly enjoyed playing it and if you haven't, you should do yourself a favor and, at the very least, rent it.

I played it over the weekend on the PC.

Prey is a game of the 90's. It succeeds in only providing a post-Quake gloss to the tired genre by adding a limited portal and gravity mechanic; unique gameplay is only really provided by the latter and mostly in the multiplayer environment. For the most part the portal tech. serves as a way to spawn enemies in convinently and to provide a visually attractive teleportation system. Compare the application of the portal system in this two minute video with the entire 8 hours of Prey. Portal demonstrates progressive, thorough and imaginitive application of the idea, Prey uses it badly. Further, Prey's art style is hackneyed, the story science fiction cliche, the characters badly drawn, the gameplay derivative, the AI pedestrian. It feels like a game of yesteryear. It does not feel progressive. It feels like tedious, macho gaming. If I read like a troll then to counter I put to you that this game is seeing such a huge amount of, in my opinion undeserved, hype and publicity while more progressive indie projects (such as Narbacular Drop) go unnoticed. This makes me angry. This is unacceptable.

Prey is at best a 7/10 experience.

Portal looks nice, but I don't really get all the Prey bashing. Yes, both games are first person and use portals, but this looks much more like a puzzler. Why not love them both? :D

The press indicates that Portal is to be set in the Half-life 2 universe. My guess is that this video serves to show off the tech. The application of this in a real world setting may well yet be shown...

This is going to have Coop right? Because this would make amazing hours of gameplay. I noticed as you watch the trailer furthur and furthur down. You can see those two people interacting with each other really quickly and insanely fast.

Man this could open up a whole new genre in the FPS world. Valve can try and get people involved in making Portal maps and get more custom made stuff done for this.

Watched the trailer again, this is fucking sweet. I like that there are no standard "guns" in this and that its treated like an agressive puzzle game.

I love the whole Combine-white-sterilized-hospital facility.

This may be single-player puzzle-solving. I think the people 'interacting' with each other are actually ghost versions of YOU.

Jesus, imagine a TEAM version of this, where you and your friends create portal traps in succession. Giant Rube Goldberg-esque hilarity ensues, making Escher proud.

I thought that was showing multiplayer as well. I'm sure a mod will come along to give multiplayer, if not.

Anyways. At first I thought.. wtf? is this a 2d game in 3d? Ok, I can deal with that. I laughed during the dialog explaining everything. Then it goes 3d and I think.. wow. Ok, but the maps seem a little bland.

I kept getting MORE intrigued as I kept watching. That's how you make a game trailer, damn!

By the end, I wanted this game. Honestly, the guy flies through a portal, places another portal, and goes through it while being pulled down.

That's fucking crazy.

Someone just pointed this out:

Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device > ASHPD > A. SHPD > Adrian Shepard

Hmm Adrian Shepard did have a portal gun. But his wasnt as cool.
Portal isnt actually set in the hl2 universe is it?

Wow, I just watched the first few seconds but I think a lot of people have missed something. Listen to the voice, a new version of the text to speech convertet perhaps? I loved all the funny things you could do with it in HL1.

I noticed in a couple of places he picks up boxes with the portal device, a bit like the grav gun. Maybe they plan to add limited portal technology to the grav gun.

OMG yes! I have a HUGE feeling that Valve will be letting this test out for Episode 2 and we will get some insame MP version of Portal for Episode 3 :D

Does anyone here remember the portal in killer quake pack mod for quake1? The portal gun from that made AWESOME gameplay.

The difference is that portal in KQP was basically a "hole" created between one side of a thin wall and the other.

I think you may have meant:

Portal is single-player only!

Welcome to the techdemo/puzzle solving game that everyone watched the trailer and thought would be counterstrike with portals.

GJ with the prey rant and the segueway into the whole indie developer thing. The furious dick in you is strong.

But... I thought I had all my exits covered. I don't get this flaming lark at all...

I'd pay $29.95 just to get TF2, never mind Ep 2 or Portal!

Holy crap. One of my friends said i should watch this awhile ago..but DAMN.

People are bashing on prey because this is what prey could have been, if the designers had had a little more vision. Hell, just a sequence like this...give us MP with a room with random structures in it and falling damage and we'll see people get pwnd like none-other.

And remember Prey will have a sequel, so they can still introduce alot of portal gameplay in the future.
Let's hope they use something a bit better than the Doom3 engine then. UE3?

Aside from everything defaultly looking plasticy, and the CRAZY amount of aliasing everywhere.. Nothing, really.

The aliasing is definitely a problem in Doom3.. It's nowhere as bad in any other game. One thing I love about the doom3 engine.. plasma effects and color holograms and all of that. Prey was *BEAUTIFUL*.. The gun that can change ammo types, and the alarm holograms on that walls.. looked brilliant to my eyes. Especially the skys and all of that.. near the end when the sky turns purple and blue.. I've never seen an environment look so good, yet so basic.

Also the character animations seem finer than in any other game. I don't know why. But when a creature runs at me in doom3 or quake, or prey.. I feel it's alive. It's quick but very smooth. Hl2 and other engines don't give me the same effect

Maybe it's the dev's fault, but Doom3 runs better on the Xbox than Prey does on the 360. That pisses me off!
