TeamXbox (http://www.teamxbox.com) is reporting that 2K Sports are implementing some new gameplay features in their upcoming NHL 2K7.

For a list of these new features and what they mean overall, check out the article here (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/11376/2K-Sports-Announces-Unique-New-Features-for-NHL-2K7/).

"Year after year, we've been delivering new and innovative ways to play the exciting game of hockey," stated Greg Thomas, president of Visual Concepts, a 2K Sports studio. "The new skating engine in NHL 2K7 far surpasses anything we've ever produced and the advancements made in Pro ControlTM add the excitement and control our fans have been craving."

Hundreds of new skating animations have been captured to bring an unprecedented level of high quality to all the skating movements in NHL 2K7. Hockey players in NHL 2K7 will glide, turn, stop, and adjust their movement on the ice with astounding realism. Not only will skating look much more natural, players will also experience the true momentum of skating whenever players dig into the ice to accelerate or carve the ice to make sudden stops. The new skating engine adds both remarkable visual excitement and an entertaining gameplay challenge to all hockey fans. In addition to the numerous new skating animations, several new checking, passing, and shooting animations have been added, making all the action in NHL 2K7 flow with amazing detail.
Editor's Note - NHL 2K7 will be released on Xbox, Xbox 360, and PS2 in September 2006, with a PS3 release expected this fall.

Given that the 2K series of sports games is my preferred choice, I'm really looking forward to this year's titles.

It really looks like EA's game is shaping up this year as well. Sounds like a good year for Hockey gamers.

It's about damn time then! EA's been playing second fiddle to 2K Sports since the debut of NFL 2K. I'm talking purely in gameplay terms, of course, which is what really counts.

Tell that to poor MLB2k6. I realise it's the only game in town, but man is it flawed...

Wait, you're calling baseball a sport? I thought it was a fancy drug rehab program. Jaysus!

Bah. Just admit that these games are rarely more than roster updates with a few cosmetic tweaks and be done with it. You'd think that with the online capability of the consoles that they'd let you pay a nominal fee for new rosters and stats.

Of course, then they couldn't milk you for all that money in your pocket.

/end troll rant about sports games...

You bitter little bugger! :) You're mostly right, of course, but that's beside the point.

*gasp* First you call it a 'sport', now you're doubting the rehabilitation aspect of the whole organization? You, sir, at the absolute definition of un-American. :p

Notice that I left it at sports games in general? I still stand by my trollish remarks. I don't use them very often, but in this case, I couldn't stand by and not unleash them!

I tried that, but they weren't hard core enough for me. Mr. Colbert, however, will show me the way.

Me too, by the way!

This new gameplay is exactly the same as EA's NBA 'look the feet move just like on real players' garbage they showed in the PS3 conference at E3.

I have been of the 2k series of hockey for a long time...
That being said.... if the "shrug" move remains on the goalie and still a million bugs.... and with EA's apparent usage of genuine puck physics and no more speed boost.... it's a lot closer a decision for me this year than in years.

This has the makings of an interesting year for next-gen hockey titles. I'm very excited to see what comes out of both camps this year, as opposed to any other time in the past. That is a Good Thing.

I'll retract my earlier comments if the changes to the skating engine are more than cosmetic and that it's more than this year's expansion pack.

I'd love for there to be a good skating engine in a hockey game. I play with the guys at work every so often and have never really found a hockey game in recent years that I enjoyed playing.
