Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net) is reporting that the next title in the Guild Wars series will be Nightfall.

You can read more about it here (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=66111).

Guild Wars Nightfall is the name of the next game in the Guild Wars series, developer ArenaNet revealed today.

What's more, it's already heading into beta-testing, with a worldwide first-look PvP event scheduled between July 28th and 31st.

The PvP Preview Event will give both Guild Wars Prophecies (the original game) and Guild Wars Factions players a chance to try out the two new professions, amongst other things.

Those are the Dervish, a scythe-wielding holy warrior, and the Paragon, a guardian angel of the Elonian people
Start saving your pennies, Guild Wars fans!

That's way too fast. Do they feel like now that they have built a community, they can keep pumping out expansions faster and faster, with exponentially less content each time? Yeah they don't call them expansions because they can be played alone too, but all your friends online will expect you to join them in the new worlds. You don't wanna get left behind, so you gatta keep buying.

At least...thats the way I see it. I skipped Factions, then lost all interest in the original.

It's still cheaper than paying for MMORPGs.

Their plan from the start has been to do new expansion sets every six months. It's the only way they're going to make enough money to stay afloat since they don't charge for any of their server usage. And I don't see how you can say this is exponentially less content -- we don't know about the land size, but it's got two new classes just like Factions did. And Factions was a VERY sizable expansion.

Have there been any one-time world events in Guild Wars that a new person would have missed out on? Also, assuming a person knows what they are doing, what's a good estimate to take a character from new to level cap? I've been putting this game off for a while and I'm think about finally getting into it.

I know the PvE stuff in Guild Wars isn't really designed for me so much as it is designed for hardcore PvE fans that don't mind having to get a full group of real players to advance, but I don't think I can purchase an expansion just for a warrior/preist hybrid and a buffbot build. . . neither of these really appeal to me, and the PvE will undoubtedly give us horribly stupid AI drones that you can't possibly win with and thus require lots of grouping. . . so why would I buy this?

So how do these "expansions" work. If I had the original, could I play with someone that just had Factions if I did not have it? Not in all areas....but in some? Or would we both have to have the same version.

It's a PVP game. If you want to solo in PvE, play Diablo or buy a MMORPG.

I finished the first Guild Wars using Henchies for almost all the quest except for some of the later ones in which you need to have actual players where teamwork is a priority.

Right. Me too. Couldn't do that in Factions though. . . which annoys me because I love the PvP in Guild Wars, but the PvE really made the $50 worthwhile.

My point is that while I love the PvP in Guild Wars, why would I spend $50 on an expansion that only provides me with 2 classes that I'm not that interested in for PvP and, most probably, PvE that I won't really enjoy because the later half of it all requires grouping.

Compared to the original Guild Wars? Not even fucking close. Factions brought about 1/3rd as much actual new "game" as the original gave us.

I'd guess if you really knew what you were doing you could probably hit cap and assenscion pretty fast... 10-15 hours, maybe 20? A more hardcore GW fan should know better than me.

I'm not sure I believe that number, but either way, that's why it's an expansion. That's also why I wouldn't pay full price for it. *shrug*

How can you not believe it? It's just math. Take the ammount of classes, spells, and items that Guild Wars brought us, and divide by the ammount of NEW classes, spells, and items that Factions brought us. Why is Factions $50? Why will this new expansion be $50?

Then again, the same can be argued for many fighting game series.

Doh! I totally forgot to turn in my 250 orbs for a dragon mask after the fourth of July!

..and yeah, after over 2000 hours playing time I can say that Factions really was a PvE expansion tacked on to a PvP game. I was dissapointed. Even parts of the PvE game have PvP elements and almost every mission needs a good PUG.

This third game sounds neat but doesn't warrant my $50.

I did prefer prophecies over factions but the ritualist is definitely my favorite character to play. Ill get the third one for sure and unless it really sucks Ill probably keep buying them.

Really good, succint critique of Factions.

You're right about the PvE PUGs too. You couldn't JUST have humans and a good healer or 2, they actually had to be good and getting 8 good players and 0 bad players is hard to do unless you play with your guild. . . which is a bother since my guild is set up to GvG without making people sit out often (thus we only have about 30 active members and half of them NEVER PvE).

I'll buy it if they say that the PvE game can be beaten solo (with henchies), and/or the new classes are just incredible.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing through the original with just me and my roommate. We managed to get all the way to 20 pretty fast (like two weeks) only using the henchmen. I'll admit that I didn't get too into the PvP, but I did enjoy it when I played.

The best part about Guild Wars is that it doesn't require as much investment to enjoy as regular MMORPGs. And there's no planning a week ahead of time to get a group together for a 2% chance that you might get the phat l00tz!

ArenaNet (http://www.arena.net/) sends along a Press Release announcing the Guild Wars (http://www.guildwars.com/) Nightfall player-vs-player expansion pack and beta test.

ArenaNet, developer of the world’s leading subscription-free online roleplaying games Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions, and NCsoft Corporation, the world’s leading developer and publisher of online computer games, announce today the title of the next game in the award-winning franchise, Guild Wars Nightfall. Further, Guild Wars Nightfall has entered the beta testing stage and Guild Wars players worldwide are invited to participate in an exclusive, first-look player-versus-player (PVP) event, July 28 – 30, 2006.

During the PVP Preview Event, both Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions players will get a first look at Guild Wars Nightfall, and will be able to try out the two new professions being introduced in the game; the Dervish, a scythe-wielding holy warrior, and the Paragon, guardian angel of the Elonian people. In addition to testing out the new professions and arenas, players will also be able to compete for items that will be exchangeable for a variety of rewards throughout the weekend event.

The Guild Wars Nightfall PVP Preview event will kick off on Friday, July 28 at 12:01am PDT and will continue through Sunday, July 30 at 11:59pm PST.

Because they need money. You don't NEED to buy it right away and pay $50 for it. And I don't believe it because I don't know the number of spells and items in each, but also the amount of land and missions/story is important to. Factions has a full-out single player campaign just like GW right?

Kefkataran - It isn't as long as Prophecies. . . it probably is something like a third as big as the original.

However, you are totally right. This is how they pay the bills. The problem I'm having with the business model is that the last expansion didn't really satisfy me. . . but not because of the quantity of content. It had more than enough for me to pay $50 for it. Even the expansion had more content than many WRPGs.

My problem is that it's so hard to access the fun story content from the PvE game (requires getting good PUGs) that I couldn't just get on and have fun with that portion of the game. Instead, I'd really have to change to a guild that is focused on PvE and join them for events or roll the pick-up-group dice.

Most of the PVE missions in Factions can be done with henchmen. I think the AI in the hencies is actually very good.

Fair enough, I'll accept the 1/3rd then. My point, again, though, is that any disattisfaction with it is exactly why I wouldn't pay $50 for it but will instead wait till its cheaper. Maybe (hopefully?) they'll make the PvE content a bit more forgiving too?

I've been playing through the original campaign very slowly with henchmen and I've just reached a point where I'm rather stuck.

It seems to me that they are trying to make it more of a PvP game then a PvE game, which I think sucks but for those that like PvP games it should be awesome.

Oh, it has always been a PvP game, and a great one. Still, I think the PvE story bits are really entertaining. . . at least in Prophecies, before they got extremely difficult.
