Strategy Informer (http://www.strategyinformer.com) has added a new free game to their website today which goes by the name of Tremulous. Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans.

Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death.

For the price of free, that game doesn't look that bad. Anyone know hows it play?

This was posted in the free games thread the other week, I gave it a try then.

It's based on Q3, and the artwork's decent for what the engine is capable of. As far as gameplay goes, It seems to be more or less like a stand-alone version of Natural Selection, which I never could get into myself.

I gave it a try for about 20 minutes and just couldn't get into it. Not to say it's a bad game by any stretch, it's just not my style. Gameplay was pretty high paced, which is probably what turned me off to it, to be honest. I've not cared for that kind of super fast gameplay since the original UT.

Definitely give it a try though. I can see the appeal in it, it just wasn't for me.

I'm going to give it a try out later, to me it sounds very much like C&C Renegade but probably with not as many bugs, I hope :) The Early days of Renegade where great let me add!

Isnt this full of spyware/adware? I cant find any info but I remember hearing about it. Ive seen it on Fileplanet for a while now and it looks slightly interesting.

If it is, that's news to me. It's an open-source project based on the (also now open-source) Quake 3 engine. I'd be rather surprised if it had anything like that in it.

I have a very short attention span and I couldn't play it for more than a few rounds. From what I've seen of both games, it is fairly similar to NS.

Complete 100% NS rip.

You mean complete Gloom rip, right? Gloom had the same humans vs. aliens pseudo-rts-fps gameplay idea, though without the commander view that NS offered. Considering that Gloom was Q2, and this is Q3, they look incredibly similar in lighting/mood.

As for the textures... those level textures are free. I forget the name of the artist who made them, but you can download them off his site for use in nearly any unreal-quake-halflife game (And I used them fairly extensively in my NS maps too). They were used by many NS mappers, but you can find them in various Quake 3 and Unreal maps too. I can't blame this team for using those textures too, it's not like NS owns them, and they are very nice.

Complete 100% NS rip.
just read the faqs (http://tremulous.net/index.php?section=faq)

Q: OMG YUO STOLED NS!!!1!

A: No. Development on Tremulous began long before NS was in the public domain. If Tremulous is inspired by anything, it is inspired by Gloom for Quake 2. NS has a similar ancestry (please see Game Developer Magazine February 2001 issue); this is probably where the confusion arises. This answer is not intended to be a sleight against NS in any way, shape, or form, only this "observation" comes up a lot, and it becomes frustrating to answer the same thing over and over again.

And if you worry about this project having spyware, just look at the source and you'll see if it's got any. (and it's licensed under the GPL)

Hey guys,

First off thanks for linking our game.
Second, I worked on Gloom and Tremulous (as well as Vedacon who also was a member of Team Reaction), and if anything NS was inspired by Gloom. We get accused a lot of ripping off NS for some reason when Tremlous' development began in 2001, before NS was even out.

To give you an idea of what Tremulous is, it's a fast paced game of fragging, mixed with deep strategy and RTS elements.

If you haave questions please visit the forum on the Tremulous website, it's full of FAQs and guides. Theres also a great manual that installs in the trem directory once you install the game.

Thanks

I thought that Tremulous had a commander view as well. Whoopsie.

Eh, This game is NOT for me. I don't know how long the game has been in development, but it's really not for me. Everything isn't done so well, and i guess features exist that i don't really agree with.

Also confusing as HELL.

Actually... I don't know. Maybe Tremulous does as well. And if they do, it's not like NS has a patent on that either... Battlefield 2 has it :)
