Medical research company HopeLab has made a game with cancer patients in mind, it's called Re-Mission.
Re-Mission is a third-person shooter in which you actually battle cancer. On example of this is fighting cancer cells that multiply if you don't kill them fast enough. Another is traveling through a patient's bowels and fighting constipation with stool softeners. Yes. You read that right.
Through research, they found that video games act as "pain distractors," and in their studies, when people played Re-Mission, they also learned more about their disease and were more willing to talk about it.

I only read this story because, as it was on the Xbox 360 page of IGN, I was wondering what the achievements were. If they were to port it, I would buy it since I need more achievement points...

Granted any game in which you fight constipation is awesome, I don't think the actual patients will feel too good when the game beats them.

I wonder if the "stool" texture is photo sourced

This thing was up on Fileplanet and I gave it a try. It's actually not terrible, and it's a full free game. It's clear that a heck of a lot of money went into this game. E for effort.
Yeah, the full game was up on Fileplanet for a while now. The game is not disastrous, but it is also not good. The controls are very confusing and not standard. Locking and hitting baddies (cancer cells and infections) is not as intuitive and smooth as it should be. The voice acting is pretty cheesy. The graphics have interesting environment, but the main character is simply nauseating. She looks terrible and quite annoying.
OK, so now I feel bad for saying that about a game that has such a good cause behind it. So play it or whatever because it is really a good cause. I just wish the game was a little better, at least in the art design if nothing else.

Yup..it's all about folding. I've been doing it for 2 years (http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&username=bapenguin).

Yep you're pretty much going straight to hell! :p I have to give them props for actually putting in some attempt at voice acting though -- i could kill the robot companion though.
If this game teaches little kids about the cancer they have in a fun, interractive and easy to understand way, then I applaud the sponsors for embracing modern media and giving something new (that i'm sure cost a fair amount of money) a try. God forbid but if I had a child with cancer then this would be an ok way to teach her about it.

Congrats Uber!
Not sure how many of u know I had Brain Cancer.
I had that talk where they tell u to get your affairs in order and more or less
pack it in.
Since my cancer was in my brain it had a rather devastating effect on my ability to play games.
Almost 4 years later I am cancer free and fully recovered. As part of my recovery
I played games to regain my eye hand. I hated HALO but since I started the game before my cancer I had to finish it as part of my recovery. After I recovered I decided
to make some kind of product that Gamers would enjoy. Right now Boomchairs are in several childrens cancer centers helping kids.
Games are a great way to take you away from the pain!
I'll check this out!!!!!

Wow. This is why the world needs real journalists again, so many weird and wonderful stories out there worth telling.

I know your not calling thefunmachine a real journalist... Anyway, why the hell is this game on the 360 page of IGN? Shouldn't it be on the PC page?
