Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com) has news of a sequel to Final Fantasy XI (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6154196.html).
According to a Monday report on Nikkei.net, "Square Enix will develop a sequel to Final Fantasy XI ... for three platforms: Sony Computer Entertainment’s next-generation PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, and the Windows Vista PC operating system."
Editor's Note: Thanks to TDiddy for a similar submission.
Is there anyone here still playing FFXI ??

I'd play FFXI-2 if it were a bit more friendly. I played to Level 40 on my PS2 and the lack of the ability to find parties drove me away.

I loved FFXI's world and design art-wise, but the game itself needed a lot of improvements.
I really hope they take notes from not only WoW, but some other fun MMOs. In fact I hope they do so well that they make other companies take notes from FFXI-2 or whatever it's going to be called.
I'm looking forward to what they'll be doing, carefully.

If they don't use that crappy play online er...crap, I'd consider it. Consider.

Yes, my friends younger brother plays the game religiously. Aaaand I do not understand why...take away the stylized overly pretty character models and the mytrha running around in their panties...and you have a very fucking boaring game with basically no PvP and...glacial leveling times....and a few sevearly nerfed and useless classes.
The one redeeming factor of this game- the abality to change class at whem is pretty cool.

Why do they still call things like this sequels?

I still continue to play FFXI here and there when I have time. The new expansion put alot more fun into the game, and they're added chocobo breeding with this update, and soon racing, a monster arena, and it seems like a PvP arena too, since this expansion seems to be more focused on what the fans wanted.

I too really loved the world and the art design of the game. I also enjoyed the class system quite a bit. It also was the first MMO that I played that had auction houses right, WoW copied this feature after a while.
My complaints about FFXI are about the same as everyone elses, parties and combat.
I would definitely play a sequel that combined what I loved from FFXI and WoW.

There is one thing that we must keep in mind here...
I love lamp.
There's nothing like lamps.
Final Fantasy games may come and they will go... but lamps are forever.
Good lamps don't die. They just blow out.

... anyway
I predict that FFXI-2 will do as well as all the other MMO sequals, Like Ashrons Call 2, Everquest 2, Ultima Online 2.

I think FFXI-2 could blow the doors off WoW. It's at the cusp of something special. WoW is so.....n00b.

I think FFXI-2 could blow the doors off WoW. It's at the cusp of something special. WoW is so.....n00b.Anything could blow the doors off WOW, it just has to be better than WOW, better marketed than WOW, cooler than WOW, more addictive than WOW and more fun than WOW. Having it easy to get into means that more people get hooked quickly, which is a good thing.
So yeah, it could happen. But then again Sony could also pull the bluray drive from the PS3. It just ain't gonna happen.

I'd been thinking about how poorly MMO sequels do. I remember EA pulled Ultima Online 2 because they were worried it would hurt there Ultima Online 1 revenue, and I think they might have been right. Unlike the "easy money" of a regular video game sequel, an MMO sequel takes away a big chunk out of the subscribers to the original game, and doesn't seem to attract a lot of new players.
They should build a completely new MMO out of one of their other franchises.

EverQuest 2 was the right idea, it just was slightly too soon, or maybe slightly too late, either way it launched next to WoW.
Making a sequal to a game that is persistint is also a strange concept. As if you keep the mechanics of the first game, then it could be closer to being an expansion, but if you change it too much, it's not really a sequal, so much as using the name of the first game.
The company that manages to figure out how to convince the playerbase to migrate to a sequal, AND get new players in... well they are doing damn awesome at that point.

heh, what WoW had was Blizzard hiring the leaders of the top EQ guilds that was originally planning to go to Vanguard, drawing thousands of thousands of players with them. Not saying that it was the determining factor, but it was at least an important one. Vanguard then faded away...

I played it for awhile, the main problem was finding a group, it was near impossible to level up or quest solo as you got further in.
However the class system really shined. Really awsome. I also liked the idea of timing combo moves with your party members for big effects and damage.
Also what was cooler than summoning Ifrit to help fight for you.
Overall it was a good game but had alot of flaws.

I can't stand Asian MMO's... They are even worse grind fests than their Western counterparts. I think it is because they have this idea that to make an MMO all you have to do is take a JRPG, tear out the story, and put some netcode in it's place.

A new FF MMO will mean several things. First, a reason to get a 360 in Japan. Second, a MMO on a next gen console. And third, it's.... Final Fantasy. A FF MMO that came out within a few months of each other, as opposed to being out years in Japan, and shafting the rest of tha gaming community, would be nice. I wonder if it will be cross platform?

They simply need to change the mechanics slightly on the way combat/grouping is handled, modify the rather large grind that is required, and it'll be simply killer. Sub jobs are far and away superior to the talent point system that is wow, and the AH setup is better as well. Complete with a less "kiddy" art style, it would do pretty damn well I would imagine. They just have to stick with the obviously eastern bent to the artwork, and not fall into Uncanny Valley.

Why did the morons at Square-Enix not call this game Final Fantasy Online instead? Think of all the poor fools who are more casual FF players...the ones that walked into the store to see FFXI, just to be enormously confused/disappointed wondering what the fuck happened to Final Fantasy because the game was not at all what they expected (or wanted for that matter). This game diverted from the existing FF formula in almost every imagineable way, more so than even FFXII (or FFXIII for that matter). Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles...all those games were able create their own niche more effectively. Why not this one?
Terrible marketing move IMO. This is evident by the fact that FFX sold almost 8 million copies and FFXI didn't even break a million. That's 7 million "tricked" customers right there, wondering if you absolutely need an internet connection to play the latest FF game, why the hell it has a monthly fee now and why you have to buy a freaking hard-drive along with it.

SE made a little press release saying it's NOT an FFXI sequel.

They said the same thing at E3 or something, that they were making something else.
I still play FFXI and love it.

I played FFXI for almost 3 years. Loved it, and had my gripes. Overall I thought it was a great game, and I look forward to any kind of sequel. In the meantime, I just simply accomplished all that I wanted to, and moved on to WoW. At least, until something better comes out.

I still play FFXI and love it.Too bad. I was looking forward to seeing a FFXI sequel. Like others were saying, keep the class system, tweak the gameplay to make it a bit more accessible, plop it into a new world with a new next-gen coat of paint and I'd definitely be interested. I think a new & improved version might bring back a number of former XI players, and maybe pull in some new players who were turned off by how dated XI seemed by the time it hit the 360.
I guess if this new MMO is for a franchise I'd be halfways interested in, and it comes to the states, I may be interested.
I still play XI once in a while, just not nearly as much as I used to.

I find it REALLY hard to believe that FFXI sold less than a million copies.

I'd still be playing FF:XI if it weren't for the HNM camping bs you have to do to get certain items.
I camped that one birdman for an entire weekend, always with at least 3-5 other people, beat the other players to the punch 19 times before I actually got the kote instead of the consolation prize knuckles.
Oh, and that is one of the "easy" ones that not everybody wants.

I believe you are fully wrong. VGCharts doesn't have ANY of the FFXI versions in its database. There were 500,000 PC and PS2 subscribers prior to the Aht Urgan expansion and 360 version back in January. I'm almost positive it sold well over a million copies even before this year.
