Our buddies over at Next Generation (http://www.next-gen.biz/) are reporting that sales of videogames grew a stellar 25% in June, while console sales grew by a massive 85%.

You can read the full details here (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3414&Itemid=2).

NPD Group reports that June videogame sales are actually up a whopping 25 percent compared to June 2005, contrary to multiple analysts’ gloomy predictions for the month.

According to the firm, no videogame-related categories (i.e. software, hardware, accessories) experienced a loss compared to the same period a year ago. Total videogame sales came in at $844.5 million.

Console hardware sales grew a massive 85 percent year-over-year to $158.7 million compared to $85.5 million in June 2005.

During the month, PS2 sold the most pieces of home console gaming hardware at 312,000 units. Xbox 360 sold 277,000 units, slightly above analysts’ predictions, and the Nintendo DS outsold both, coming out as the top-selling piece of portable hardware at over 593,000 units sold. The DS Lite, which launched in June in North America, certainly was a driver in the hardware category.
Very impressive figures!

Editor's Note - Thanks also to CaptStu for alerting me to these figures!

Well, given that the new Madden isn't out yet, I would say no!

It boggles my mind that the PS2 is still selling as strongly as it is. Guess I can see why God of War 2, Guitar Hero 2, etc. are sticking to the PS2 for the immediate future.

That's like one every 10 seconds for the 360. Doesn't sound too shabby. Wait?! Is my math right on that?

By my calculations, there are 2,592,000 seconds in the month of June! That puts it at one sold every 9.35 seconds.

PS2 gets you a lot of gaming for a little cash and arguably the games are just as good.

/sigh

Actually it literally just stopped working one day, to the extent that it would power on, the light on the power button would flash repeatedly, and no image would appear on the screen. To top it off the disc drive wouldn't even open to let me get my game out.

I called MS's tech support and described the situation to them. I was told it was probably corrupt ROM and that I'd have to send it in for service, for which I'd have to pay postage both ways as well as the service fees since it was no longer under warranty. The ball park estimate for repairs that they gave me wasn't much less than buying a new machine at the time, particularly with shipping included.

I ended up selling it to Llama (http://www.llamma.com/xbox/) as they have an entire business devoted to salvaging parts from busted Xboxes. How they manage to stay in said business with such a reliable and well constructed machine on the market, I have no idea.

If he hasn't already, I think Evil should pull a Peter Molyneux and gracefully admit that he was abjectly wrong about the fate of the DS. (Or perhaps he did that already and I missed it? Have no idea.)

You notice almost no one can attack Sir Peter anymore since he has publicly and sincerely lamented the fact that Fable (and to a lesser extent, Black & White) didn't live up to the pre-release hype or his own promises of what the game would be.

Admitting that you're wrong may hurt like hell when you're doing it, but people often respect you immensely for it afterward, especially compared to someone who can never admit a mistake.

But all that's neither here nor there... The important thing about this story is, with the release of the DS Lite, it appears as though Nintendo has all but sewn up yet another generation of handheld domination. I know that I have absolutely zero interest in getting a PSP at this point, whereas before I got my DS Lite and several of the spectacular games for it (NSMB, Mario Kart, Phoenix Wright, Warioware: Touched!, Brain Age, et. al.), I was kind of torn--almost wishing we had the extra money to spend so I could get a PSP and enjoy all the emulation and homebrew goodness it offers.

Does anyone think there's a good chance the PSP will overtake the DS now?

As long as Mr. Evil Av continues making ridiculous statements like that, hell yes. Had he said it once (before or shortly after the system launched), the issue would be dead by now, but he insists on bringing it up again.

Honestly fitbabits: Did you not think his comment is completely ridiculous?

Yes, it is patently ridiculous. But, and this may be key, perhaps there's an element of humor involved with it? Maybe he thought that at the start and is now just going along with it because he knows he'll get a reaction from the people here? You know, like Kelegacy and blowjobs. :)

Granted, I'll still remember his quote... If Evil did decide to fess up, I'd respect him, hell, i'll give him a subscription. I do enjoy coming here and not just to poke Evil in the ribs every time NPD or new Japanese numbers are released.

Does anyone think there's a good chance the PSP will overtake the DS now?Well, if Sony smacked SquareEnix upside the head with enough money for a FFVII PSP remake, maybe... But seeing how badly GTA:LCS flopped which should have been a sure fire success.... you have to wonder.

The DS in Japan alone has 4 titles now (NSMB, Brain Age 1 and 2, and AC:WW) that are well on their way to 3 million units sold each indivudually. And Japan *still* has Pokemon DS and FFIII to weather.... So DS hardware sales are by no means going to be lagging, at all, anytime soon. Edit: Aside from, well, the system being completely sold out country wide again, like last xmas...

MOST wireless routers will do fine. My D-Link DI-614+ was a bitch to get working. Finally figured out that if I slowed the WiFi speed down to 1-2Mbps, it would work. Which sucks, because I do work off of my laptop wirelessly, so I have to constantly switch if back and forth. Guess I need to upgrade my router.

Incidentally, Nintendo has a Wireless Router Compatibility page, although I can't be bothered to find the link at this moment. =)

Nice. Come to the forum for the news story... but stay for the stereotypical racial remarks!!

But I'll just wait for the explanations like the ones for the PSP adds, telling me I'm wrong to be offended and that there was nothing racial/stereotypical about the remarks.

Well, this may sound weird to say, but I think Guitar Hero is part of the reason that PS2's sales are doing so well right now.

I work at Best Buy, and I'm not kidding you when I say we sell 20-25 of those things a week (we have it on display, which helps) and on more than one occasion I've had someone ask me if we had an Xbox version--when I say no, I've seen a couple of them staring longingly at both the PS2 and Guitar Hero...and a couple of them have walked away with that PS2.

If Guitar Hero II ends up building on the success of the first game, I think wherever the third game could end up being an important thing for the console race.

Speaking of which, I will probably buy Guitar Hero II and get one for a buddy of mine so we can play the co-op. Not only is co-op rare these days, but having heard the songs being played on the display about 2,000 times has taken away any enthusiasm I might have had for the first game. So maybe with a clean slate it'll be okay. The PS3 (and the Wii, very likely) will be out by then so we surely won't have GHII on display at that point.
