Nintendo is preparing to release an official Nintendo DS headset for voice chat. The headset will function both as a pair of stereo headphones as well as a microphone for voice chat in Metroid Prime Hunters and the upcoming Pokémon Diamond / Pokémon Pearl titles. The headset will also work with any other microphone-aware title such as Nintendogs. The headset is expected to cost around $10 when it is released mid-september in Japan.

There's already a third party headset for sale at Best Buy, if you can't wait.

I have to say I've never owned a pokemon game, but after seeing the level of detail in the new games, i.e. genders as well as a day/night cycle and breeding them to create tailor made new pokemon, along with voice chat in worldwide wifi battles, I think now might be a good time to get into it. Plus if someone releases a homebrew skype app I will be all over that like pink on a lolita.

Minus the WiFi, those have been there since Gold/Silver on the Game Boy...

If you can use your GBA collection in the new DS games then I'm gonna go pick up a used Fire Red version. I'll destroy anyone with my Charizard team.
And Savok, you can communicate and trade in Animal Crossing without voice chat. Having VoIP in Pokemon is super cool!

Dear god how? You sit there with an IM program or something?

I can answer that. Animal Crossing has built-in on screen keyboard. You can type out messages to others who are visiting your town. (You can also write letters to them)

Can't have screen names. Can't have a server browser. But we can have voice chat.
Wonderful.

MP: Hunters has VoIP as I recall, though you must have obtained their friend code off-game to use it. Protect the kiddies and all.
I think that's really cool. Of course, Nintendo should be making a Pokemon MMO for DS, but they're not really as smart as I give them credit for.

And yet I still can't tell Pikachu to use Thunder with my voice. Thanks for nothing.

Nooo Noooo... Noooo. The MMO is for Wii or whatever console Nintendo puts out. The being able to transfer those pokes back to you DS for training and single play action and whatever, or mobile battling is where is at.

I haven't played a pokemon game since Gold/Silver, but this is looking very tempting. I'm thinking i'll have to buy this online, to avoid the embarassment of buying it in a store.
Also, I wish someone hadn't already quoted the Bill Cosby "pokeyman" thing, because otherwise i'd totally be all over that.
