NeoGAF is showing off some new magazine scans (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109733) of the upcoming Nintendo DS games, Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl.

Without being able to read a lick of Japanese, this is what I can deduce:

The game appears to use a new pseudo 3D engine without looking too unfamiliar from the GBA games and includes a new group of Team Rocket-like villans (http://img24.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=93869_90061_3064_resize_419lo.jpg).

The Touch Screen (http://img102.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=93856_89939_2064_resize_581lo.jpg) is used to control Pokémon in battle.

New Legendary Pokémon (http://img23.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=93329_89334_10621_resize_473lo.jpg) are COOL!

Battles and trading can take place over WiFi (http://img152.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=93910_90462_6067_resize_395lo.jpg)

It better have some kind of voice recognition for choosing pokemon and activating attacks!

I find it difficult to ascertain whether there's actually a magazine there between the riot of color and confusing layout! I felt like throwing up just looking at it...

Sweetness. All I really wanted was trading and battles over Wifi, I look forward to some trades with the EvAv cronies. And I really really hope you can finally use more than 4 damn attacks.

If the games have both of these features, I'm sold...It's been a long time since I finished the original Red&Blue, and while I own Leaf Green it was just a rehash.

Japan is hilarious that way. For a society known for it's intrisic design sense, they're graphic design is enough to make you laugh out loud most of the time.

Stick to gardens, architechture, and sumi-e, my Japanese friends.

Don't care what the cynics say on this one, I'll be playing the heck out of it.

You do know that was the entire point of Leaf Green/Fire Red?

Still, I'm happy to FINALLY have online trading, a pity that the game is so god damn ugly. I mean, jesus, is their art department running on interns?

I can't wait to shout "I choose you Pikachu!" and "Lightning Bolt! Lightning Bolt! Lightning Bolt!"

Yeah, this could be a great thing for DS and go on to sell a few million copies.

You do know that was the entire point of Leaf Green/Fire Red?Well, 8-bit pokemon (GB pokemon) can not be transfered into 32-bit (GBA) Pokemon games. So unless you'd rather have most Kanto region Pokemon be as scarce as vampires during the day, I think you're going to have to allow Nintendo this one.

Selected Gold/Silver Pokemon were available in Colloseum and XD, but i'm curious how they will allow us to capture the rest.

Still, I'm happy to FINALLY have online trading, a pity that the game is so god damn ugly. I mean, jesus, is their art department running on interns?Uhm.... ok. I'll just leave this one alone.

With their hipping-and-their-hopping and their-bipping-and-their-bopping, they don't know what the jazz is all about! You see, jazz is like yellow pudding.

I know, I own Leaf Green, I'm saying the entire point of them is, as you say, bring Kanto into the newer generation along with adding most of the new stuff like my Pokemon eugenics program. If you expected more, wrong game, should of gotten R/S/E.

And come on, look at the first scan with that fuckwit blond guy in it, those textures look like they've drawn in crayon by a two year old, from this (http://www.rpgamer.com/games/pokemon/emerald/screens/emerald033.gif) to mud, bullshit. And the avatars, what the hell when wrong with them, we've got a female who's going to be fashionable for all of 5 minutes and the guy is in a beret. Few beings on Earth can do a beret, Monty (http://www.wwiivets.com/Curriculum%20Images/images/Field%20Marshal%20Montgomery,%20North%20African%20 Desert%20November%201__A_jpg.jpg) being one and even then it was only through sheer force of will.

Does anyone still do sumi-e or is it all reproductions of Muromachi period stuff?

It's funny how they're still too lazy to animate all those little bastards. I mean, how long will we have to look at static images shaking around and firing particles out of their heads?

well there is over 400 of them now, along with all manner of moves from Attract to Hyper Beam to Surf.

It looks like pretty much the same tile set theyve had since day one.

It would have been nice to see a couple of 3d trees and trainers. I mean the environments arent typically something you could call demanding. However, perhaps it just doesnt need the 3Dness.

I'll probably steal this off my younger brother. I did Ruby "for him".

Maybe, just MAYBE, the game isn't about being fashionable or graphically wizard. It could be (run with me on this one) that Pokémon is about the game: collecting, battling, strategy, breeding, etc.

If I want fashion, I don't look to video games.

You're missing what I'm saying.

She looks like shit, he looks like shit, these are things I have to deal with considering how much you're staring at the guy/girl. And don't start whining about gameplay, it's Pokemon, we know exactly how it's going to play, each new version is for new features, new Pokemon and better graphics, that's it.

Wifi alone means I'm going to rub the cart on my chest and giggle, being online however does not mean it hasn't been graphically butchered.

I was hoping it would use the mic for calling out pokemon and telling them what abilities to use. That would be awesome. And some kick ass legendary's there.

Ummm guys do you really want to be some where yelling at your DS stuff like, "I choose you Snorlax. Noooo I said SNORLAX."

I wouldn't mind the pokemon voices from the show however.

Well no it's not necessary, like in Nintendogs. But the fact that it could be there would awesome.

LOL... How good is the mic commands. I know in ghost recon 2 I was made alot of the time, I'm screaming and it's like the just stand there getting shot. Non attentive AI or bad mic system. Or I talk with marbles in my mouth, i don't know about that though.

Nooooo PysDuck I HATE YOU... "PysDuck PysDuck" I DIDN'T CHOOOOOOSE YOU DAMMIT... >_<

The wifi is best thing in a long time for pokemon... Hell I thought I was good but my competition were cousins who played with stupid emotions and cheats.... You can like your Venussaur, rare candied up, all you want but don't send him out when you see Charizard. I'm sure real players got team builds and crap already. I don't but know my types, playing ruby now to learn abilities and personalities.

Heh, I've been thinking of getting Pokemon Yellow just for old times sake. I have team ready and everything. But it's normally pretty easy to tell what trumps what.

Yeah but on gamefaqs it seems people get serious on team building. I didn't even know folks consider anything a tank in that game. Seems like competition could get serious.

That's one of the strange things about Pokemon, the GB/A/DS games, when you KO an opponent's Pokemon, you can trade out. Anywhere else, you're stuck with what you have, your Raichu takes out a Pidgeot and suddenly a Golem appears and you really have to swap out Pokemon, this gives Golem a free hit on whatever you bring out. This means types become a lot less important and stats rule the day.

Tanks have uses, for instance you use Toxic and Leech Seed, then swap out to a Snorlax with Leftovers, he's gonna be really hard to kill, meanwhile the poison and Leech Seed chew you up, he's gotta swap and if he doesn't have Baton Pass, all the stat buff moves are lost.

When we play, friends bring over their teams and we place them in the GameCube version. Everyone plugs in their GBA and we play on the projector together. You can have 2-on-2 battles and the strategy gets immensely deep.

Last weekend, there was a Pokemon tournament in the Washington DC area. They had 64 players battling for the top spot and the matches were amazing to watch. There are subtleties to the game I hadn't imagined before that I REALLY respect. On top of that: with almost 400 little characters, each with their own customizable moveset, the game remains one of the most balanced games I've ever played.

This is an option you can set in the menu. If you are hardcore, change it.

Try the game on the GameCube. It isn't as long or as RPG-like, but every battle is a 2-on-2 battle, adding another deep later of stragety.

Fuck that, I power lvled the two starters for the first GC game, just went through and trounced the lot. I just wanna catch all the little buggers, when I want a challenge I'll do it against human beings.

Balance? Most of the old Johto Pokemon completey sucked stat wise.

Let me know when you're in the Washington DC area. We'll have to battle!

Every fall we have a LAN party at my place. We usually have a Mario Kart tournament and a Pokemon Tournament and craploads of other games going on. You are more than welcome to join, just prepare to be schooled.

Edit: Or we can battle online when Pearl / Diamond comes out.

I remember back when I first played Blue on a gbc... I had a Alakazam, Snorlax, Blastoise, Gyarados, Dragonite, Arcanine or Flareon as my recking crew. If i wanted to be a dick about it, Mewtwo, the three birds, Alakazam, and Gyarados..
