Gadget and technology site Gizmodo is reporting (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/sony/rumor-sony-umd-movies-vanish-from-target-store-shelves-186796.php) on a rumor that UMD movies are no longer being sold at Target stores. We've known (http://evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11155) for a long time that UMD movies were not selling well and that movie studios were pulling support. Can anyone confirm or deny this latest development?

What I can confirm is that i have never knowingly bought one, or ever had the slightest inclination to so. I swear.

The Target here and near my gf's place have stopped selling them alltogether.

This is true. I just spoke with a couple of store managers of Super Targets in my area and they all confirmed that UMDs are no longer being ordered for any stores. As for the stock already in the stores, one manager hinted at a huge UMD sale some time soon.

Yes! I rarely play my PSP anymore, but I might as well use my disposable income to increase my library of games for cheap. Who knows, I might pop something in after a late night at the bar. Especially if I'm too drunk to read the labels.

Maybe this'll teach Sony to stop trying to shove the same god damn films down our throats with a thousand different versions.

I was to understand that they were outselling PSP games? Or is that in Japan?

Yeah, and I sure would like to pay more for a movie that looks crappy on on my PSP and also can't be used on a DVD player for home. Did I mention I'd like to pay MORE for UMD over DVD? I did? Oh, then I guess I got my point across.

Heehee, I snagged a funny quote from that site. Here you go, enjoy:
"It's a console that SCREAMS digital Carpe Diem and will redifine reality as you know it."
HAHAHAHA!!! Did Ken write this crap?

I'll be honest, I want them to do it, and I want them to fail, such is the pain their products have caused me over the years.
But hey, maybe we'll have some mass exec culling and get people who are in touch with reality in charge, make Sony something less then hellspawn.

I only bought one: The Silent Hill Experience. And I only bought it because you can't buy it on regular DVD. And you can't buy that one in stores.

Never really understood UMD. If I had a PSP, I'd just buy the DVD, rip it, then store a PSP-formatted version on a memory stick. A little more work, a lot more value.
I've never been interested in the PSP. It is expensive, sucks batteries, and is basically PS2 ports on a smaller screen. If I wanted to play an EA sports game so bad, I would play it on my Xbox. I am not being a fanboy, but I got a DS Lite around a month or so ago with that free game deal (Brain Age) pretty much making the $129 system fall into the $100 price range.
On the DS I can play games that I cannot get on the bigger systems along with it being MUCH cheaper and having longer battery life. There consistently is no reason that I would give up the DS. Sony has failed.

I have asked it before and I will ask it again....whats the point of paying more money then a DVD to watch a 2 hour movie on a tiny screen? The idea never appealed to me now nor will it ever. Maybe if they changed the name to PCP....

I work at Target, and we pulled the UMD movies from the shelves last week and sent them back.

Oh, and as a teeny side note - the space is being cleared for Wii and PS3 games, so it's not all doom and gloom for Sony here.

When the Suncoast went out a business, I picked some of the better UMD titles for CHEAP. I go on vacation enough and ride the bus to work, so buying Time Bandits for $5 is worth it to me.

Interesting, I know a guy who specifically got a PSP because he wanted the mobile movie playback. I guess he is not in the majority. I personally think it's a stupid idea in the first place, and I guess the market it showing sony that another non-universal media format isn't welcome.

Time Bandits is TOTALLY worth $5. I'd even pay close to $20.

So they're just going to let that shelf space sit empty for the next four months? I somehow doubt that...

They'll fill it with something, silly, but just as a temporary measure.
Of course, there are no cast iron guarantees that the PS3 will launch this year!
Yes, I did!

I stopped by Target tonight to check this out. Sure enough, all UMD mares are gone. what is in their place? Not much. Some accessories, Memory Cards for Cameras. In fact, the entire gave section was mostly empty.I wanted to pick up a copy of Pokémon Emerald, but they had hardly anything in stock.
How much ya wanna bet Sony scraps the whole UMD movie Sham and tries to sell downloadable versions of the movies through the PS3?

I too work for Target, in the electronics department. UMD movies have been pulled, replaced by a new independent film campaign. UMD movies were merchandised in the DVD section, instead of with the games. I personally have merchandised the UMD movies back out onto the salesfloor, in some extra space, in case someone wants any until we send them back to the manufacturers.
Any manager that reported "some huge UMD sale" had no clue what he was talking about. Most music and movie items don't go clearance, they are returned to manufacturers and warehouses.
PSP game sales have actually been decent. UMD movie sales have always, of course, been dismal.
While talking about sales... I might as well state that I haven't sold a 360 in a few weeks, while PS2 sales are still continuous. I don't claim that this will affect the 360vsPS3 battle.

Thats because there are just too few compelling 360 titles out right now. I know, I have one. Oblivion is good, GRAW is good, Condemned is fun...but 2 of those are on the PC. There is no real reason to have a 360 yet. Until their exclusive content comes out, I see few reasons to buy one. Hell, the backwards compatibility makes me not even want to play my old Xbox games. Who wants to check a list before they play a game to see if it works?

I agree that there aren't enough good 360 games available. It is a shame too. I was in Target with money in my pocket. I know the summer months are slow, but I would buy games all Summer long. Instead, they are all waiting for a Fall release, when I won't be able to afford all the games I want. :(
