Next Generation (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3400&Itemid=2) brings us the news that David Jaffe has returned to his online blog after a long break. The return is made especially sweet in that he gives word for the first time that the God of War franchise will likely be a trilogy. From the article:

As the original God of War is one of the most acclaimed titles of the current console generation, the announcement of God of War 2 wasn’t really much of a surprise. This week, Jaffe hinted in his blog, however, that a third entry could be in the cards.

“As Cory [Barlog, GoW2 director] and I have said to the press, [GoW2] is the second act of a bigger story. And when you are making a game, you never really know if the game will turn out good enough to merit another one in the series. But after last week, I can say I am very confident of our chances to be able to complete the GOD OF WAR trilogy. You never know, but that's me just putting it out there.”

So maybe PS3 will be getting a God of War title (eventually) after all.

Mark Rein slammed the idea of episodic games, so that must mean this will suck, or Mark Rein is an idiot.

I haven't played GoW, and it's the only game that has me interested in a PS2 at the moment. If a GoW 3 ends up on the PS3 I might consider buying one to play the whole trilogy. I love games like Ninja Gaiden and Prince of Persia and, correct me if I'm wrong, this should be a game for me.

I loved the game, it had a good amount length to it, but was too easy. Not that it was EASY, but after playing Ninja Gaiden, I look forward to a similar challenge.

Well, Epic continues to release Unreal Tournament games at full price with a lot of stuff recycled (levels, gameplay, weapons etc), so he should STFU

GoW will be as many titles as they can milk it for.

Actually if you read the full article he admits that franchises/sequels are the industry's form of episodic content. He just doesn't like the actual episodic episodic content.

The first certainly is a FANTASTIC game. If you like Ninja Gaiden and PoP, can't imagine how you could go wrong with this.

Not everyone hates themselves that much. :p

Sounds about right for me then. I found Ninja Gaiden a bit on the hard side. I didn't finish NG on normal difficulty because I couldn't beat the boss in chapter 14. I didn't find it too hard until then, but that boss just frustrated me until I got completely insane and sold the game. Picked up the Black edition and I'm playing in Ninja Dog mode now, so I should get through it this time :)

Ohmygosh! You are right! How can the Star Wars movies be Episodes 1-6? Conspiracy!

God of War is one of my top 5 favorite games of all time, so, this is a fucking treat for me. Also a curse though, as I was hoping I wouldnt have to buy a PS3. Ah well, there's always time to start a roth IRA, liquidate my assets, and take out three mortgages on my house.

By the game comes out on PS3, the PS3 will have had several price cuts. The team is still working on PS2 dev kits with an upgraded PS2 engine. For PS3, they will need to start at a very early level, creating an engine, new art assets and everything designed for High Def. Believe me, you have PLENTY of time to save and PLENTY of time to play other things.

lol I was questioning more that the nature of episodic content is to release small chunks over time rather than having a single point of sale product.

Mark Rein does not want people buying $20 used games.

Mark Rein does not want people buying $20 episodes of games.

Mark Rein wants to sell people $60 games on a regular basis.

Of COURSE he considers sequels to be okay. He built his company on selling sequels to Unreal.

Unreal Tournament 2007
Unreal Championship 2
Unreal Tournament 2004

And with this announcement, the PS3 will finally have a worthwhile game on it to merit a purchase... When it (the game) comes out anyway. Which will be awhile. Probably a long while. A long while enough to have a price drop on the console, too.

Hooray!

The pathetic thing is I own all of those games, to the exception of Unreal and Unreal Tournament 2007.

God of War was easily one of the best games on the PS2, and if it's sequel is anything to go by, it will be great too. And the story is amazing. One man trying to defy the gods of Olympus... amazing. A trilogy would be welcome.

Yep. I'm just saying, he points out that sequels are something different, and I think he's right with that, motivations bad or not.

There is a big difference between Pre Planning a trilogy like Dyack with Too Human and going with the flow with God of War. God of War was good and people liked it so they are making another. They didn't pre plan the Trilogy because if the first ones sucks, then what.

GoW is probably my favorite game of the previous console generation. If they keep making 'em, I'll keep buying 'em.

I think the difference would be that one has an overarching story while the other is a series of one-offs. For a total geek-analogy, think about the difference between Babylon 5 and Star Trek.

Well, as a little note, God of War from the get go was planned for sequels. There is a large, over-arching story that they had built into the first game to go 'teasers' to possible extensions to the series. Since it was so well done, they are going for it.

1. One cutscene describes Kratos' younger brother, who was abandoned as a child because he was not strong enough to join the Spartan army. Having fallen to Hades, the unnamed brother vows to seek vengeance on Kratos for having deserted him.

2. Second cutscene shows Kratos visiting his dying mother and attempting to discover the identity of his anonymous father. Kratos' mother reveals that his father is Zeus, and Kratos decides to take his revenge on Zeus for having abandoned him and his mother. (This ending is perhaps the most likely. A painting near the end of Pandora's Temple displays Zeus fighting a mortal, stating it as a future event.)

3. The final cutscene describes the eventual death of Kronus, who had been carrying the Temple of Pandora on his back. The Temple is eventually rediscovered in modern times, still containing many secrets to be discovered.
