Owner and Lead Game Designer of Splash Damage (http://www.splashdamage.com/), Paul 'Locki' Wedgwood, updated his developer diary (http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/enemy-territory-quake-wars/717741p1.html) today, and in it he reveals the bad news:

It's also been a challenging year, as the team here has given extraordinary effort towards completing the game this year. Unfortunately, sometimes effort isn't all you need -- sometimes you just need more time. To ensure the quality we want, we've decided to push the release out of 2006 to allow for extended testing, feedback and game balancing.
As someone who was really looking forward to this game, I have to say that I'm definitely dissapointed. Looks like the door has been opened for BF2142 however, here's hoping that DICE can deliver.

Well, they just laid out the red carpet for EA to roll right over them... <.<

hmm, rushed BF2142 with poor gameplay... or buy another one of the other games coming out this fall... I am going with no BF2142, it's the Vietnam of tommrow.

Had they attempted to make a 2006 release by Christmas without all the "extended testing, feedback and game balancing", I doubt this game would have lived up to its potential. EA might get their game out first, but I have a feeling Quake Wars will roll all over BF when it's released.

I'm so hard up for a MP centric shooter at this point that isn't either a WW2 setting or a modern Terrorist/Counter-Terrorist title. I'll probably plunk down the cash for 2142 despite every fiber of my being telling me it's the wrong choice.

I completely disagree.

My point of view is that it doesn't matter what EA does with the BF franchise. Any way you cut it, it won't be QW:Enemy Territory. The only thing in the pipeline that might hit before QW:ET is 2142... which is on the same engine as BF2, so it isn't positioned to steal any thunder from whatever is coming with QW:ET, imho.

QW:ET doesn't even have to be as good as BF2. People will play it anway, just in the hopes it'll get better support over time.

Seems kind of silly that they can't test and balance the game between now and the end of the year though.

Yeah, I am very disappointed about this delay, but this is definitly a good thing. There is so much crap being released with loads of bugs these days. Balance would be an issue with Quake Wars if it didn't get special attention during testing.

Good. If the game needs fine tuning then by all means give it that!

There's plenty to play in the meantime. :D

Yeah, that sucks. I'm jonesing for a new large-scale multiplayer game. The videos of this reminded me of the glory days of Tribes.

Dang I hate delays.. UT2007 comes out this fall tho, that ought to be enough to hold me over until then I am sure. BF 2142 is still iffy for right now, when the time comes I would really love a demo. I have BF2 installed at home, but I hardly ever play it now days... is it worth it for the expansion?

Hello BF2142 for christmas. But, you can't rule this out. But which one to get?

Is this coming out for the 360? Some of us do not have high-end PCs, or we simply do not care to get one.

What this game was going to run on some of your computers?

PC and PS3 are both confirmed, I believe.

QW being delayed doesn't increase my interest in BF2142 one little bit. That game looks liks shit.

BF2142: It does not matter what it looks like, just look at the endless number of patches the game needed to still be a dumb FPS. I can only hope that the additional time for QW is spent on balance, balance and, not to forget, balance. Make it a real team-oriented game with no hopping and grenade-orgies and nobody with a sound mind will talk BF2142!

Considering most of us have already played games based on the same engine, I would think the obvious answer is YES. You forget your sarcasm tag? :p

Rather than buying another game to tide me over, I'm thinking I may read books. Or go outside. Or spend some time with my GF.

I can't wait for BF2142. BF2 is the best multiplayer game ever made even with its few flaws and if BF2142 is remotely similar (which it will be), I can look forward to some solid gameplay and a lot of fun this fall/winter.

One thing to remember guys. A LOT of people are still complaining they don't have the hardware to run BF2, how in the hell will these people be able to enjoy a next gen shooter like Quake Wars that requires a much more capable machine?

Why do you think Counterstrike 1.6 is still so popular? You don't need a uber computer to run it. It's that simple.

The gameplay in BF2 is garbage. The technology they use to simulate gun physics is so floaty and piss-poor it is unplayable. Also EA is the devil. I want a crunchy, physical mass FPS, and I think only a Quake or Unreal engine game can give that. BF2 is not the best multiplayer game ever. Tribes I is better than BF2.

Wow, that sucks. This game was partly why I finished my upgrade. I was hoping for a fall release.

This is good news. I don't even think DICE or EA know the meaning of 'delay'. They always rush the BF games, and they always have unforgivable bugs for a full priced game.

I'd rather wait for the BLT than settle for the turd sandwhich.

On the contrary, BF2 is in my opinion the worst multiplayer game I have ever played. The load times are horrific even on my higher end computer (AMD4000, 7900GT@580/1580, 2GB RAM) and the menu system and the way you set up controls is horrible. Not to mention the fact that the game is full of bugs and after reinstalling and patching and reinstalling and patching and reformatting and reinstalling and patching the game just doesn't like to WORK. Not to mention all the whore type players who just use the same damn gun or the damn plane.

I can wait until 2007 for Quake Wars.

The "whore type players" thing is not an issue if you can find a good private server. BF2 gameplay shines when people are playing the game seriously. I think it's a diamond in the rough, personally.

With 2 GB ram though you should be seeing decent performance - I upgraded to that recently and performance is pretty good on my machine (similar specs as yours except I have an AMD 2600+).

The bugs of course are very annoying and I hope QW turns out good and steals some market share from EA.

I've got the same machine as well....2600+, 1.5 gigs of ram, x850xt card with an xfi..and bf2 runs awesome on high settings. I honestly have no interest in the new battlefield, I'll keep playing the 2nd one and be happy. I know not everyone is a fan of future wars and robots, there will still be a lot of players on bf2 for a long time to come. I will give quake wars a try though when it comes out.

PC and PS3 are both confirmed, I believe.PC only, the way it should be.

The delay sucks, but I was planning on building a high end PC in early 2007 anyway, so I'm not crying too hard. It takes a while to get that much mega into your textures.

Ah, you're right. A PS3 version is in development, it's just not been confirmed. Kinda like how Assassin's Creed hasn't been confirmed for Xbox 360.

If I had gotten a hold of QW at the end of the year, I wouldn't be able to play with the Wii or any other game. I suppose this is a good thing in that retrospect. BF2142 isn't even on my radar.

Because I can spend 5 minutes and find a dozen stories that talk about AC and its inevitable PC and Xbox 360 versions, and I'm willing to bet you won't have nearly as easy a time of it.

Guys, I'm not complaining about the delay. I'm not even saying that I am going to buy BF2142 (if I did, it would be the first BF game that I'd ever bought). I'm just saying that a lot of people are going to be looking at these two games in the same light, and only one of them is going to be out in the prime shopping season.

I'm honestly looking forward to Quake Wars, no I don't hate BF but I know I'm not the only one that feel that BF2142 its the same shit as BF2 just in a futuristic way, I feel that is more like a expansion.
Anyway I think both games will be great.

Splash Damage take this bit of good advice please.

I'm not bothered about 2142. EA have lost me as a customer when it comes to big online shooters. 2142 will be a buggy shit fest.

Quake Wars all the way for me ;)
