Cubed3.com (http://www.cubed3.com/) brings word (http://www.cubed3.com/news/5492) that Ubisoft's The Settlers, the popular Real Time Strategy franchise with numerous releases on the PC, is coming to the Nintendo DS at the end of the year. The game will feature two campaigns, four civilizations, and a stylus-driven interface. The article seems to suggest the game will retain its RTS roots, and not go turn-based like the recent Age of Empires DS game.

UPDATE: Jeux-France (http://www.jeux-france.com) has some screenshots (http://www.jeux-france.com/news16551_the-settlers-annonce.html). Thanks Stupid Fat Hobbit.

If this ends up reviewing well, I'll probably pick it up. Glad the DS's library isn't lagging. Something else to give my Lite a workout.

I'd prefer if that had done Settlers II instead.

I'm addicted to The Settlers 2 - 10th anniversary demo.

Damn you, 90 minute time limit!!!

Is this game related in any way to the board game Settlers of Catan?

I just spent 30 minutes trying to dig up something on the web even remotely hinting at this. I'd always assumed it did, and was going to make a pithy comment about the true roots of the game being turn-based. I couldn't find any connection, though. I even found computer versions of SoC.

I'm not sure if they're making "a Settlers game", or remaking the first game in the series.

Might be:

Settlers of Catan = German board game.

The Settlers = German strategy game.

Both same concept.

Coincidence?

Screens here (http://www.jeux-france.com/news16551_the-settlers-annonce.html), and if it ain't Settlers II, it sure as hell looks like it.

Edit: at least, I'm assuming those are screenshots, and not mockups.

Settlers of Catan rocks. Have no clue about this, though.

This could be very bad on DS. Not that the game will be bad, only time can tell that, but games like the settlers and handhelds go together entirely too well. I can only imagine the hours of never doing anything, anywhere, because I am constantly playing it wherever I go.

Thanks Stupid Fat Hobbit.
I laughd out loud...

And I'm also addicted to the Settlers demo. It is REALLY cool.

Are those screenshots real? or just a fan-made mockup....
The images are EXACTLY IDENTICAL to the original PC game.

If they're real, I think I'll cry. from joy.

I'm definitely looking forward to this - I always meant to try out the Settlers, and this seems like a great time to jump in!

I still need to pick up Age of Empires for the DS. Unfortunately I haven't seen it in any stores.

I still need to pick up Age of Empires for the DS. Unfortunately I haven't seen it in any stores.I really like Age of Empires. It does a good job of feeling like an AoE-themed game of Civ, which is pretty great in my book. You train peasants and they build buildings / collect resources, and you research upgrades and such to progress through the different ages, as in AoE, but it all takes place in a turn-based fashion and all the combat is very mathematical, this-unit-stronger-against-this-unit-on-this-terrain type of thing, which feels very Civ.

It does a good job of laying out the data you need (which units are stronger against which other units, which ones are good on what terrain, which are good at attacking buildings, etc etc), and the interface works equally well with the stylus or the buttons.

If I have a complaint about it, it's that it can get really cluttered once a lot of units start crowding around attacking each other, and the unit graphics aren't quite clear enough against the background, so you have to scan over everything to make sure you aren't missing something obvious pretty frequently. Aside from that, though, great game with oodles of replay value. In addition to the multiple civs to play, you get bonus points for doing well in the campaigns, and can use those points to buy shiny units and such.

Well, I have been on the fence about Age of Kings, but after your description I now know I must have it.
