View Full Version : HP laptop problems, not sure of cause

Ok, so I bought my HP Pavilion dv7 laptop just shy of 2 years ago. For the majority of the time, I only had minor issues, like sometimes it would freeze up on startup, and I wouldn't be able to click any icons, only move the cursor around the screen.

But about a month ago, I was watching a stream on Team Liquid, when suddenly my computer screen went black, and sound cut out. The lights on the keyboard were still on, and the fan was still running. So I just held down the power button to turn it off. I started to do that during any videos online, but it wasn't very consistent about it. I could get through 20 minutes of video one time, and it wouldn't fail on me this one time, for example.

Since then, it has been turning itself off like that during not just videos, but once when it was idle with a browser open, once when I was just browsing, once while I was playing Starcraft 2, once while listening to iTunes. There was one night where I couldn't get it to even boot up after failing, but that seemed to fix itself in the morning.

When it does fail, sometimes it just sits there on a black screen and all lights on, and I have to power it down. But other times, it will go black and just restart on its own!

Sometimes it also gives me an actual error message, but the errors are not all the same ones, and I don't get an error message most of the time, so I don't know what to think of it.

I brought it in to my local computer store (Not Best Buy!) to get some advice. They suspected either some sort of driver/software error, and that I should just use my recovery discs to start over and see if it fixes the problem. They also said that it might be just overheating.

I don't think that overheating is the problem, as it doesn't run very hot at all unless I'm gaming. When I game, it runs really hot, but its only failed once during a game. It isn't like it fails when I'm on it for a long time either, I was just browsing my Google Reader stuff for like 5 minutes, and it shut off on me just today. Not hot at all.

As for doing a recovery, I have not done that yet, since I don't know how, and I didn't listen very well when the computer store guys told me how to. But I really feel that it may be a hardware issue, since rarely anything changes on my computer. I rarely change settings, download anything, or even visit new websites. My computer and my usage habits have stayed mostly the same for about a year.

So this computer issue is finally pissing me off, so I come here to you good folks to try to figure out what is wrong before I spend any amount of money.

Sounds like a faulty / cheap capacitor on your mobo is failing / failed. Been known to happen.

Also, this just came up, I don't remember this happening before.

I was just watching a video in fullscreen, when the computer seemed to freeze, and put out an annoying buzzing sound. I had to just shut it down. Not sure if it is a related problem or not. It doesn't go to black, just freeze.

You bought a laptop, that means someone else put it together for you. The only advice I'll offer friends in that kind of situation is "hope you have a warranty and let them fix it."

laptops are a fickle beast. Unfortunately, lockwoodx is right. There's not much you can do to fix it aside from taking it to a technician, and hopefully you are still under warranty. It's not that you yourself couldn't fix it, I just wouldn't recommend it if you aren't extremely familiar with laptop hardware configs. They do some really odd placement choices due to the space confines.

I just brought it to my local computer store to have them take a stab at it, or at least poke around. It isn't under warranty anymore, so I don't think I have much of a choice. I'm pretty bad at computers in general. I think this will be my last laptop for a while.

Recommend a Toshiba laptop really. Although, I'd never give up my desktop... until probably 'computer on a chip' matures.

Fuck Toshiba. I've known of over 30 people with fucked up unfixable bios and system restore systems gone to hell. Also their cd's are useless.

Nonetheless, consumer reports rates them high on laptops.

I'm typing this on a Fujitsu laptop rn. Some 6 years old, still works fine. Bit slow, but hard to complain because of age, and it wasn't the top of the line kit even then :P

It looks like I will be in the market for a new computer after all. Motherboard is going to hell on this one I guess. So I am probably going to make a new thread soon and try and get people's opinions on this fine website. I just have to figure out exactly what my needs are right now.

Well, before you buy a new machine, let's make sure it's not a software issue!

Backup all your data and files and get ready to do a complete reinstall of your OS, and we will walk you through it. Get your Windows disc ready, or break out the manual if your computer has a reinstall partition instead, find how to access that.

Do some research on reinstalling your OS on that machine, or how to set it back to factory defaults (which will erase all your files and programs, but give you a fresh install on the OS).

What do you have to lose. Could solve your problem entirely.

After some light browsing, I found that HP Pavillions suffer from some sort of black screen of death. From what i can tell, it is some issue to do with the heatsink being improperly mounted by the manufacturer. There are lots of videos on it on Youtube. But.. I would not advise cracking that case open any time soon. Check to see if your warranty is up. And maybe think about reformatting your drive and reinstalling windows.

Could be as simple as some new arctic silver then?

But, on a laptop, that sounds like pain. I've never opened a laptop myself.

It's very easy actually. It usually involves taking the "hinges" off and then you proceed with the keyboard itself.

It is not incredibly difficult. But it is daunting. Someone who is self-supposed to be "pretty bad" at computers should be warned to stay out. Check your warranty -- if you (or a tech) break it open, you run the risk of voiding the warranty.

For the recovery stuff, if you haven't done it yet: Either you'll have discs, or you can check and see if there's a recover option when you boot. HP likes having the factory restore built-in, and it's usually just hitting F11 before Windows loads. Once you get the process started, it's pretty easy. They'll lead you through it step by step and everything is explained. Just have to keep in mind that if you need anything backed up, you'll need to do it before the recovery process.

If you can't boot to get stuff backed up, external enclosures for laptop drives are really cheap, and will let you plug the drive into a PC. Removing a laptop HDD is one of the easiest things you can do on a laptop, shouldn't be more than a screw or two at most. You'll have to check your manual for the step-by-step, if you need it.

That said, it really doesn't sound like a software issue. Those would have to be crazy bad drivers. Better to try the software side before messing with the hardware side on a laptop though. If it's under warranty still (2 years means you prolly would've need an extended option), then don't touch anything and just file the claim. Worst case (or maybe best), you get a free new laptop.

Worse still, it could be a bad capacitor on the graphics card. Modern browser uses the GPU even for browsing the web.

I haven't looked at this thread in a while, which is pretty bad of me. That laptop is on its way to being a bit of an experiment for me now, so I'll be looking at all that has been written in my absence and start messing with my computer. Once I get everything I need off of it. Thanks again guys.
