Congrats to Pirates, although I'm terribly sad to see Superman dropping so quickly. Gosh, though, those summer box office numbers all around (save Pirates) are pretty pathetic. :(

Almost anything by Jerry Bruckheimer is a hit.
I thought Pirates was weird. I liked it, but I found myself sort of going "what?" at certain parts. Davy Jones and his crew were freaking awesome though. Some great CG. The Kraken was also pretty scary.
Still need to see Superman, maybe tonight.

Pirates has broader appeal than Spiderman. Some people just aren't going to go see a comicbook hero movie. They see essentially the same junk in Pirates, but without the comicbook stigma. :-)
PoTC isn't even half the movie Spiderman is, though, sadly(except in duration).

Pirates 2. I liked the special effects, I really loved what they did in terms of special effects and the villian designs. But that was it, the story bored me quite a bit.
So far from the summer films. Superman Returns I have liked better as a whole.

Pirates was disappointing for me. It's like they took the great CG and humorous banter of the first one and forget to come up with a complete story. It's understandable to leave some loose ends to tie into the next movie, but you need to tie up a few at least. It was like watching the first half of a 5-hour movie.
I was still entertained, just a little disappointed.

That's what my girlfriend said. It was the chaotic middle movie in a trilogy. It seemed like a bunch of random events thrown together that left us going, "What just happened?". It was still very entertaining and I will probably buy the DVD. I remember feeling the same about the first movie, but I enjoyed it after repeated viewings. Maybe the same will happen with this one.

I heard that the box office sales for this past weekend went up something like 48% from the same time last year!
Still, if I had to pick one movie that would up end the Superman record, I don't think I would have ever guessed Pirates 2. Guess I'll have to contribute to that total this week, eh?

I'd think most of the people who wouldn't see a movie just cause it's a comic book movie wouldn't see a pirate movie either and/or are evened out by the number of people who will see a comic book movie (often several times) just because it's a comic book movie.

Pirates was pretty good, but it relied HEAVILY on people having seen the first movie and the fact that there's going to be another one after it. It's not bad by any means, it's just a "middle" of a story. It's also a lot more fantasy-oriented than the first, which sort of makes people less likely to suspend their disbelief.

I thought we might have some kind of record when I got to the theater at 7:30 and the 8 and 8:50 shows were sold out and had to get tickets for the 9:45 show. Pretty good over all. It did kind of jump around though. Glad to see the 28th is the wide release for Scanner. Was hoping to catch it today but didn't open here this weekend.

I thought pirates was ok - and like someone else said - it's the middle movie of a trilogy. It's not really intended to do a lot but keep the story moving and not let anyone important die - although the ending was, surprising, in that regard. Also The chest had a special heart shape on it that appeared on Davy Jones' music box and the creepy voodoo lady had a necklace with the same heart on it as well. you could see the locket/thing on the table when Jack was picking up her rings and stealing them. So, perhaps the creepy voodoo lady was the woman tha destroyed Davy Jones?

Were you both equally upset at the end of Empire Strikes Back? Back then we had to wait from 1977 until 1980 to find out WTF was going to happen to Han Solo and the rebel alliance. The ending of Empire was extremely meek with fairly little hope.
I am very happy with intricately connected sequels with cliffhangers. The original Star Wars didn't have as near as high cliffhangers as Empire yet I don't seem to remember people being so upset that they couldn't seem to manage to wait the 3+ years to see what was going to happen. Now people have to wait about 10 months and it's almost as if you are giving them a root canal.
The original Pirates film didn't end with any sort of enigmatic cliff hanger though. It was an action packed pirate romp, and it ended. Now, they made a sequel because it made a fuck ton of money, but the sequel sure as hell could have told a more interesting and easier to follow story. About halfway through the movie, I wasn't really sure what the fuck was going on. I'm not stupid, but damn, I was just having a hard time following everything that was going on, and that isn't a good thing.
/minor spoiler
What the fuck was with the dice game? Maybe I need a crash course in Pirate Yahtzee, but I did not, for the life of me, understand what the fuck was going on with that silly dice game.

The story of Pirates happening right now is not a hard one IF you know about mythology and pirate lore. For example, glaring right in my face about Davy Jones was that he fell in love with a woman and that woman is Calypso. Of course, in her human form she is the Voodoo preistess. Amazing the amount of greek mythology they are throwing around in Pirates. Hell they even threw in the ship wreck just like in the Odyssey.
If you were quick with your eyes on catching things, you have noticed a certain locket located and two different locations which connected two very mysterious persons. All in all, Pirates 2 and 3 is a very complex love story.

1977 was Star Wars, which didn't have a planned sequel until they saw how much money it made. 1980 was Empire followed up by Jedi and both were written in the same plot form that Pirates 2 and 3 are written.

The thing is that Empire actually resolved story lines specific to it. But Pirates 2 resolves absolutely nothing. Therefore it doesn't feel like a stand-alone movie in any sense. I suppose this is ok, except when you're not expecting it (I wasn't), and you have to wait very long (not sure when the next one comes out). Otherwise, it was reasonably well done and I enjoyed it.

What the fuck are you talking about? Hell. Fucking troll. Fine, I take your shitty bait: 1.) While Superman may be considered a failure from the perspective of how much it cost (MAY), it still made a VERY impressive amount of money, and in fact more than Batman Begins, which most everyone adored. 2.) Even IF you're going to exagerate by calling the film a "flop" you cannot assume that just because it hasn't done well the movie sucks. That's a stupid jump in logic. 3.) Pirates doing well has nothing to do with whether or not Superman is good or bad. People aren't going to Pirates because they heard Superman sucks (in fact, it has a higher average rating on Rotten Tomatoes THAN Pirates); they're going because they want to see Pirates.

Like most of the nerderati, he wanted to see Superman fight giant robots (metallo?) and have brainiac using psychic powers to clone aliens and so on and so on.
Almost everyone I've talked to who didn't like SR didn't like it because it was a movie about a world with Superman in it instead of a movie about Superman in the world. It's the -human- angle that brings in the audience, as was amply demonstrated by Spider-Man's (and X-Men's) success, and SR merely capitalized on it. It's exactly that focus on humans and the human world (and NOT Superman) that makes the nerderati finger their EVDO cellphones with excitement at the promise of getting first post in a "worst movie EVAR" thread on Aint-it-Cool. The rest of us loved it, or thought it was merely a good enough movie.

Meek? wha? That film was epic. Vader sliced and diced him. That film was about Luke facing him and well he loses horribly. What's so bad about that? Even on that note, people we're looking forward to the next film. There was more than enough storyline and engaging dialogue there to keep people very interested. Vader alone ruled that whole film.

I was pretty annoyed that A Scanner Darkly was only a limited theatrical release... I guess i'll drive down to santa monica next weekend to see it but I wish I didn't have to. I know it doesn't have Ben Afflek in it (gag) but christ, it's got keanu and it's based on a quality philip k dick story. Whatever.
So I waited in line for like an hour and waited in the theater for another hour to see this damn pirates 2 movie... was I the only one who thought it dragged on for about an hour too long? I really felt like it deserves a place in the "forced epic" category... it has the interesting characters from the first one, and badass CG, but I couldn't give a rat's ass about the story. The ending didn't leave me wanting more (or shocked for that matter), it left me thanking our lord and savior jesus christ that I didn't have to sit there any longer.
The fight sequences were of course quality though, and the movie itself is worth a watch, I just think I'm gonna hold out on pirates 3 until the dvd release heh.

Superman is a total flop. I haven't seen it so I obviously cannot comment on its worth as a movie, but in terms of making money, wow, what a failure. At this rate, Superman probably won't make $200 million domestically. People are gonna lose their jobs.

I'm not going to see Superman, but Pirates definitely has me intrigued a bit. I'm going on a reluctant date later this week and I might see the film. It's either Pirates or wait until the weekend for the new Shyamalan flick.
I rarely go see films because there just isn't much I want to see for a 9 dollar ticket. I used to go all the time, but the last few years have been pretty quiet for me. Dates are the exception, but I usually luck out with women that enjoy the same types of films as I. The last movie I saw in a theater was Munich, and she really liked it, too. After having seen both Supes and Pirates, it's obvious why Pirates is doing so well.
Simply put, it's a hell of a lot of fun. I saw it during a saturday matinee (there were no lines, but by the time the movie started, the theater was packed), and for the first time in a very long time, when the credits rolled, there clapping and cheering.
After supes was over, the audience was sitting there kind of dumfounded. I don't know about the rest of you, but although the movie was expertly filmed, it was all meaning and no fluff. And the meaning was way WAY off base. I'm sorry, but some of the scenes in Superman were truly creepy (and I'm not talking about the scenes with lex). I expect the sequel to be called Superman II The Kryptonite Restraining Order. Add that to the fact that the ending made no sense, there was never a real good conflict between the hero and the villian, and that there were way to many shots of Brandon Routh simply looking pretty. The flying was ok, but the webswinging in spidey crushed it in terms of the thrill. Ugghh... i can't even think about it any more it pisses me off so much. Seriously, how can you guys defend a director that NEVER READ THE COMICS! but claims he grew up with the character? WTF? Oh, and don't even get me started on how stupid the setup to the first action sequence is (I saw the film while in florida to watch a REAL shuttle launch, so it was more than a a little hard to suspend disbelief)
Sigh, i was expecting fun, but in the end it was just expertly filmed blah (my wife could barely stay awake)... and it's earning the money it deserves.

Singer never read the comics? I find that hard to believe. That said, it's obvious that Superman Returns was more strongly based in the "Donnerverse" of the first two Superman films than the comics, though it still stuck to what makes the Superman comics good, in my opinion. And I again point out, it's actually earning (or was before this week) a good chunk of money, just not comparatively to the amount spent on it.

Hmmmm some FPS superman flying would of been "fly", at 800 mph... I would have to say next movie has to up the anti like Superman 2 with Zodd. Doomsday or Brainiac. I think an evil AI from a civilization more advanced than our own is believable as throwing crystals in water. It also opens up the story about being the last of anything from Krypton. I think with the hanging out at the hospital, kinda takes away from stepping up the doomsday dead thing.
With Hollywood though you'd get something like Brainiac is the brains to a creature he created to be his brawn, Doomsday. Couldn't have a world where Dark Seid exists and creates him.

I thought Pirates was entertaining, but highly annoying at the same time. Not resolving anything and then having that ending just screams MONEY WHORE to me. Ick. Still, I wasn't actually offended like I was when I went to the second Matrix film.
Superman Returns was horrible.
Pirates 2 was pretty good, although I felt the dialogue and wit was nowhere near as sharp as the first film. Repetitive and overused jokes seemed forced, and Captain Jack's dialogue was especially dry.
And how Badelt managed to out compose Zimmer is beyond me.
That said, bring on Pirates 3: World's End.
