Valve sends word that DoD: Source is free this weekend.
The second Day of Defeat: Source Free Weekend has begun. This free trial period features all the new content added in the Summer Update to Day of Defeat: Source, including the new gameplay type (Detonation), new missions (Jagd, Colmar) and gameplay and technology enhancements. To join the ranks, visit www.steamgames.com and set up a free account. All Steam users also receive free access to the recently added Media area, which features the DoD movie shorts and a growing collection of game trailers.
I just wasn't that impressed with this when I played it during the last free weekend.

Give it another go, they added a play style and did some balancing.
It is free after all.

I bought the game from the stores, but for some reason the disc does not work on my computer. The disk is fine, as it works on all my other comps, but not my gaming rig.
Does anyone know if I can validate a copy online using the DoD cdkey I bought from the store? or if I validate DoD on another comp (on my steam account) then use the account on my gaming rig and dl DoD will that work? Be really helpful cuz I want to play but just cant get this to work.

Been out for a while, a lot different from battlefield. Their not really comparable, completely different scales.

Ok, if you read what I had up before I misread. All you need to do is go to my games and from the drop downs at the top one should give the option "Activate a product..". Hit that and it'll give you a window where you can enter the key and then it'll be added to your steam account. Although I wonder, what do you mean by the CD doesn't work on your gaming rig? What doesn't work exactly.

Its not that great, but I got the silver packag so it didn't cost that much. The main problem is everyone hangs back like its ocunterstrike or something. All I have to do is rush in suicidally and I get the top score on the server in no time.

Thx I will try that when I get on my other comp tommorow.
And by it doesnt work, I mean I put in the CD/DVD (whatever it is) and it just tells me that the CD/DVD Drive has an error. And then does not boot up, but on this computer and a couple other ones it Autoplays just fine.
No idea why it does not work, never had a problem before. And thx again.

DoD Source makes for some pretty good gaming and the new play style is pretty fun. Give it a try this weekend, couldn't hurt! :)

Agree entirely. It's a huge problem. You need to be aggressive to get anywhere, but the bulk of players aren't smart enough to realise that and just sit and camp...

I've tried it a couple of times and I just haven't had any real fun with it. Of course I'm addicted to BF2 and GRAW X360 currently.

It's the ultimate tug of war game. Far more compelling than the impenetrable CS if you ask me and probably the most immersive WW2 experience you'll find in computer games.

To the person with the CD problem, just install it to your other computer, activate the steam account then file copy the entire folder across. Amazingly Steam makes ZERO use of the registry to you can just copy it over and play.

If I like this I am considering get these games all for $60 in the Valve Pack.
Counter-Strike: Source
Day of Defeat: Source
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
Half-Life 2: Episode One
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
Half-Life Deathmatch: Source

I'd say so, DoD:S and Ep1 are 20$ each standalone. If you could though I'd find a pack with HL1 as well.

What exactly is Half Life: Source? I wasn't sure if that was the first one or not.
I think I have the first one somewhere around my house but I don't know where. If it is with this pack it save me some time.

Well I am having some problems withit. Whenever I try to join a server it goes on loading for about 10 minutes then give me "failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer" error.
Anyone know whats going on? I have had some strange errors with other PC games too. That is why I stick to consoles mostly.

I get an error when changing video card settings, but then it works after that.
Anyway I've been playing this game since it was a Half Life 1 mod, its my favorite first person shooter anything, i'd really recommend it.
Like was mentioned previously though, PUSH! Too many people lay back in this game.

It's HL1 on Source. You don't get the mods, but you do get the HL1. ;)
Amazingly Steam makes ZERO use of the registry to you can just copy it over and play.
It makes plenty of use, it's just smart enough to recreate anything that's missing when it loads up.

Is it essentially DoD, only prettier? Or is it like CS Source, in that it's a completely different game?

DoD but prettier I'd say, but try it for yourself and find out.

You might not have the latest video drivers. I'd go to NVidia's or ATI's site (whichever card you own) and download the latest ones. It might fix the problems with your other games as well.

That's the kind of thing you have to judge for yourself. Personally, I never found CS:Source to be completely different. I liked it right away. But considering how many people play CS 1.6, there's obviously something I don't see.
When people are super hardcore about a game, the slightest change can seem like a mountain to them.
Then again, I liked BF1942 better than the later versions, so I guess I'm not one to judge.

It wasn't that there were slight changes, it was that the fundamentals of the game - especially at the 'professional' level (We'll say clan-match level) - are completely different. I'll list a few of the changes, but there are more:
-Can't shoot through walls (Not everyone enjoys this, but, it would be like taking out RJ's in Quake)
-Instead of boxes to hide behind, there are usually cars. These have a different shape, height, etc, than the old boxes, meaning you cant actually hide there.
-That bullshit that's all over the ground, like bottles and barrels, etc. To this day, walking into a barrel can really bounce you around.
-Weapons were changed in how they function. It's hard to explain this one, but really, using any gun in 1.6 feels totally different in CSS.
-Many levels were changed drastically - see the double doors in Dust2 for example. Often these don't seem like big changes, but when you clan-match a lot, they become huge.
-The game 'feels' laggy. I have a pretty big beast of a machine, and this isn't one of those 'my computer sucks, so the game is bad,' but the game FEELS like you're playing in molasses. You slide around a lot more than you did in 1.6, which has a much more solid feel.
That's just part of it, obviously, but those are big things.

You can shoot through walls just fine. I got headshot by a cheapass AWPwhore today through about a foot of what appeared to be solid concrete. Another example is on cs_militia, if the terrorists megacamp the garage you can just shoot the 2 hostages in the garage through the walls, save the two outside, and just let the T's play with themselves as you walk away. Maybe you meant you couldn't shoot through walls in 1.6?
You also mentioned cars instead of boxes, and on that point, that is entirely a level design choice. I still see plenty of crates in the maps.
The main reason people still play 1.6 is because they have shitty computers, imho. :-)

download that and install it, maybe you have a really old version of directx---since you don't pc game much. I'd expect steam to catch that issue, but you never know.

Would changing the resolution to giant count as changing video card settings?
