There's racism in Europe, more then people realize, enough so that's just as offensive as it is to American eyes.

I think that Tim had some very strong points that he made. Very good stuff.
His comic has lost some of its original humor. He's better off doing Video Game tie ins than sticking with the story. It just aint funny anymore.

He ran a guild on Dark Iron (WoW), the worst guild on the server by all accounts, long story (a lot of which I've forgotten anyway) he came on one day and kicked everyone he could out of the guild without warning (he was no longer Guildmaster, he'd actually given up that title a week prior having moved on to EVE) and deleted their forum. It was chaos to say the least, granted most of the PAA couldn't stop laughing, it was still an asshole thing to do.
To top it off, this (http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php?d=20051223) appeared a week later.

Wow. Tim comes off like a self righteous asshole with that little diatribe. The ad is offensive because it IS offensive. That's that. While I agree it might not be offensive to European sensibilities, clearly to an American the ad is very inflammatory, and while Tim recognizes this fact he sort of casts it off like we're in the wrong for feeling that way. And then he unilaterally decides that it's time to get over racism in this country. Hey! Great idea Tim! Whew! I'm glad that whole racism thing is done now that you've decided to decree it so.

So ask yourself, honestly, why it's offensive to you. Because the billboard doesn't depict slavery. Not in the slightest. If the black woman was picking cotton, and the white woman was standing over her with a whip, then hell yes it would be offensive. But it's just two people squaring off, and one of them has the upper hand. So why does it matter to you which one that is?
Because if we really want to reach the level of equality in our society that we all say we do, we need to stop dwelling on the past. Slavery is abolished. Has been for a good long time. Not a single one of us Americans owned slaves, or was a slave. It was a horrible period in time, but it's over. Being oversensitive about things like this billboard is what's keeping this racial tension alive. If you ask yourself honestly, you may find that you don't actually think the billboard is offensive, but that you've just been taught it's offensive.
Stop making race a big deal, and race stops being a big deal.
So thats when racism and prejudice against black people stopped, back in the 1800s? Good thing there was no violence against blacks in the 1950's, 60' or 70's. Pheww Its not like we are only one generation removed from Jim Crow when it was legal to treat blacks as 2nd class citizens. Because major social and cultural norms just completely disappear after the genration that believed in them with no lasting effects that carry on for years and years and are propagated by ignorance, stereotypes and hate. I mean I am not racist (I have a black friend and hispanic wife) so naturally everyone must feel like I do, and it is silly for anyone to still be bothered by things like these because race is no longer an issue in America, just 50 short years after it was a major factor.
Hey maybe if we stop making terrorism a big deal, terrorism will stop being a big deal.

You have no idea what you're talking about. You don't know me at all. I understand the noble motivations and all that jazz behind AA. The problem is it screws over the poor whites, especially in comparison to wealthy and middle-class blacks. Ask Knite on this board (Who's family are Ukranian Immigrants) what he thinks about AA. He has a really interesting story (Not kidding, his family is cool :) ).
I can understand something, and not agree with it. Regardless of what you think or say, AA is government sponsored racism. Saying otherwise is ignorant. As a matter of fact, saying I don't understand it without having any idea who I am is ignorant.

Of course I don't know you, but (seemingly) ignorant statements make me presume someone is ignorant about the subject. I sincerely apologize for being a prick.
Yes, poor whites are affected negatively by affirmative action. I've long thought that affirmative action should transition from race-based criteria to economic criteria.
That said, black people are still laboring under a massive amount of historical baggage. That's clear from the prodominance of poverty among blacks as well as the number of blacks residing in jail as compared to other ethnicities. Many young black people are struggling to make it out of woefully underfunded schools and giving them a leg up into a good university is a worthwhile goal for the government to undertake, short of actually fixing the neighborhoods/culture of racism themselves.

But the same argument can be made for irish ghettos, trailer parks, or rural America. I could agree with economic criteria. What I believe matters is removing the line that makes people think of others by race. Give the poor a hand up the chain, if they're willing to work at it (this is key.)
I did it without help from the government. But that's not to say it's easy, or everyone will stumble into the opportunity's I did. The wealth gap needs to be bridged, but focusing on race to solve that problem will only extend racism further. The poor white are given REASON to resent blacks when they get preference at school's over them. I want the best person for any position, not the best (Insert skin color here) person for the position. We're a capitalistic society, and people need to be looked at based on merit. If you're poor, and work hard, you deserve a couple extra shots at raising your status.
As far as black society, MLK Jr. would roll in his grave if he saw what has become of what he fought so hard for. Ever watch Boondocks? That was the most poignant episode ever.

In my 14th Amendment class during this last Fall semester, we discussed affirmative action. A buddy of mine (a black dude) and I both latched onto the fact that affirmative action, at its core, seems to be about a helping hand to the economically disadvantaged. While it may have started as a way to fight racist admissions procedures, I think the economic rationale has taken over as the primary purpose of affirmative action programs. What we need is official implementation along these lines. Still, I think race has a place in affirmative action. Again, blacks have historically been horribly disadvantaged and providing a boost to a segment of the population that, at least in my mind, still needs it, remains a worthy cause.

Interesting point but I'll add: if you are always giving them a helping hand up how will they ever do it themselves? Human nature is to take the easy route to any conclusion. Why would the NAACP want to level the playing field by removing AA when that would mean their "people" would be forced to use their merits to advance instead of their skin color. How are we to move on and heal the issue of race when zealots continually shove in our faces that races are different and need special treatment.
Affirmative Action is reverse racism at its worse. It gives someone of one color of skin an advantage over someone of a different color skin. That is all it does. Why should I be punished for something that was abolished over 100 years ago? Why should a black man, with comparable skills, be given priority treatment over me? It plays off of historical guilt which we should be well over by now. I'm so sick of people trying to guilt trip me (as a white man) into admitting I'm racist simply because I'm white. Fuck that noise.
Racism is racism and you can try to justify it all you want but it is still racism.

I'm an American and I'm not offended by the original PSP ad, nor am I racist. I used this thing called a "brain" and thought about the ad for longer than 2 seconds, understood what they were going for and found it effective.
Just because SOMEONE might be offended is no reason to be a sheep. I think it's a big problem today that we'll sanitize everything so that nobody will be offended, ever. You can't provoke original thought or debate without offending people occasionally.

Quick scenario: 2 people go in for a job interview. The first guy has 15 years of experience and has actually worked with most of the processes the company performs. The other guys has 5 years experience and knows a few of the processes the company uses. The first guy has a 3 figure salary, the other guy has a 2 figure salary. Which one is going to get hired, the one who is 'the best' fitted for the job or the one who has a much cheaper salary? I can tell you from personal experince with a company that they are going to hire the cheaper guy, because even with the cost of training, he is more cost effective than hiring the more experienced more qualified more expensive applicant. That is why the whole 'They should hire the best person' argument against AA never really worked for me. Because as you stated we are a capitalistic society and companies usually opt out for the lowest bidder.
As far as black society, MLK Jr. would roll in his grave if he saw what has become of what he fought so hard for. Ever watch Boondocks? That was the most poignant episode ever.

I consider myself to be pretty desensitized to most things. Violence, foul language, racism, etc. A commercial (and I work in the ad industry) has never made me stop and go "What the fuck was that?". Their ads are not only completely off the deep end in terms of ad branding, they ARE offensive. What you have to understand about someone being offended, is it does NOT matter if YOU are not affected by it. If someone feels as though it is hurtful, then it is to them. Diminishing someone's opinion by telling them they are wrong, is your own opinion, and is baseless for any form of arguement.
They really should have stuck with the company that was doing their original ads where the people were throwing the PSP to eachother. But what you'll come to learn in the ad business, is that when something doesnt sell the way you expect it to, it's always the fault of the ad agency and not the product. Let us not forget that the PSP is an overpriced piece of junk. Maybe if it had some decent games, or hadn't tried to push yet another useless media format on the masses, it might have been worth it, but of course, the sales tanked, so the ad company doing the decent ads got the boot. Of course, Sony's marketing team is pretty fucking retarded right now, so I guess that only makes sense.
Why is it that people are refuting what others believe or think? MSUStud believes or thinks that it is offensive and Bone doesn't. That would just lead to a difference in opinions between individuals. But, this isn't just offensive to MSUStud... its offensive to many other people (me included). Yet, it seems that many posters make it seem as if they are wrong to taking offense to something.... how dumb is that.
I am a black man. I do not find the images racist, but I do believe that they are racially charged. I didn't limit myself to looking at just the aggressive white over black picture... I saw all 3. And believed them to be offensive because they are racially charged.
Affirmative Action
Fact: The recipients of Affiramative Action (AA) who recieve the most assistance, on an individual basis are white females.
Fact: AA was not first applied for black people, but to "level the playing field" for WWII veterans so that they would be able to get employment, buy homes, and gain education.
Please do your research before commenting on such matters, if you don't you are part of the reason why people fight about it now. AA is not limited to just helping black people. Yet, black people have become the poster child for it, which is why it has such a negative image. AA is designed to give people an equal opportunity, not hand outs. How can it be a level playing field if the two candidates aren't equal in skill? I do believe that instead of it being based on color it should be more so categorized in terms of economics.
I was a lecturer in Masters level course in counseling... (long story short) after explaining to the class (which was entirely made up of white people except for 1 black woman about 25) a woman raised her hand and said, "If a black person got a job over me, even if they had the same exact qualifications as me... I'd think the only reason they got the job was because of AA. Because I know I went to better schools than that person." Interesting isn't it?
I have lived an interesting life. One full of many things, racism included and find it so interesting when people, who have not lived my life or come close to it, tell me that I'm not allowed to feel offeneded or to "get over it" or I'm "dumb" for seeing something that they cannont. Somethings should not be up for discussion. If you hit me and I tell you it hurts, you aren't allowed to tell me it doesn't... That is what many on these forums and elsewhere are doing.

And certainly no one should just "get over it", or this kind of stuff will keep appearing in the media. They think they can get away with shoddy advertising, and we need to tell them they cant.

Look man, the ad is, by almost any objective American standard, offensive. You don't have to read anything into it to get a weird vibe from the damn thing. It has a white woman grabbing a black woman's face with the tagline, "White is Coming." What the hell dude? Would you wear a t-shirt with that picture on it in a predominantly black neighborhood?
You're entitled to your opinion, of course. I wasn't trying to pass my opinion off as fact per se, but even if I myself didn't find it offensive, I still think it would be objectively offensive. That is, it would offend normal community standards.

Tabloids are widespread too, but that doesn't mean the bat boy is real, or that santa clause killed bigfoot
People like the dish. Scandal always sells better than good news.
Oh, and thanks for implying that I don't have a brain or that I don't use the one I have. That really helps your points stand out.
Didn't mean to imply you didn't have a brain, although I was sarcastically outlining my thought process when examining the ad. Sorry.
I, personally, did not find the ad offensive, and yes, I can see that other people might. I still think that we Americans in general tend to latch on to any perceived injustice and get irate about it before thinking about the actual content in front of us. In my opinion it affects our perspective on politics, movies, games, racism, sexism, etcetera.
As others have pointed out, the ad's intent is to highlight the color contrast. We should never judge anyone based on color, but is it racist to find beauty in our differences? It seems our efforts to combat racism sometimes homogenize the different cultural and physical traits that make diversity so incredible.

I agree. I think that cultural differences should be celebrated. But skin color is just skin color.
As an artist, to me skin color is not trivial. It's an amazing range of tones, shadow and reflections, so maybe my perspective on this is different.
But it's so widespread...
Where did that come from anyway? I've heard the story numerous times, but where did it originate?
Is there actually any truth behind that allegation?

I really don't know. Of course, like Ashenartist said, controversy sells. I just thought the story was amusing. I dislike ctrl-alt-del for completely seperate reasons.
Now don't get me wrong, I won't begrudge anyone's success, I just simply have not found it funny, and hearing of T. Buckley flexing his ego elsewhere has always kept me away from his work.

Seconded. Tim's suggestion is that we're only offended by it because we're letting the past bother us. What tripe is that? I'm not about to ignore the past just so I won't be offended by something. Hell, if that's the case, maybe we should ignore the past and decide it's ok to fling nukes around again...
Now, it's a valid point that the target audience for this won't be offended by it, but that doesn't mean that the rest of us won't be once we see it.
Hell, are there even black people in Holland? I don't even know (but I don't believe so). And if not, then that's not just grounds to make an ad like this (the people it offends won't be around to see it, so that makes it ok?).
Bah. Though Tim is allowed his own stance on the issue, in this I'd say he's wrong.

Tastefully done. This one should easily get its point across. I've never seen big-boned people portrayed so beautifully. :)

I do not find the images racist, but I do believe that they are racially charged. I didn't limit myself to looking at just the aggressive white over black picture... I saw all 3. And believed them to be offensive because they are racially charged.
Pretty much my feelings. This is a marketing campaign for an overpriced plastic doo-dad, evoking something as complex as race just to make passing pedestrians look at it for an extra second is weak.
Maybe for their PS3 ads, Sony can show clips of average Japanese and American schoolchildren competing in a math tournament, in order to tastefully highlight how much more powerful the PS3 will be than the 360. MS could counter with some early August shots of a single XBox 360 falling onto modern Hiroshima, fading to white on impact.
Isn't it great how we're all totally past this stuff?

But yeah, there were pictures, could of been faked, but still, pictures. Creepiest god damn thing I ever saw.

Obesity is a disease, though.
ROFLMAO!!
Oh the US has made Obesity a 'disease' now to allow people to abdicate responsibility for overeating and not paying attention to thier diet?
LOL LOL!
So all fat people in the US have a 'disease' now?
lol!
And anyways, only someone lacking cognitive ability could not see the correlation between the fat person and the thin person and the actual Black and White PSP ad.
Probably the same lack of cognitive ability as the people calling the PSP ad racist.
I suppose the twin in Matrix depicted racism by fighting with Morpheus. And OMG let's not even get into some of the promotional material for the movie. They were so racist no one realised.*smirk*

LMAO! Dude, that's hilarious.
Hopefully this is my final word on this topic. Thanks for the apology Bone. Sarcasm is hard to pickup on the internets and I'm...sensitive. :p
Anyway, I think the ad is interesting visually and I'd love to be in a world where it didn't engender bad feelings. A world where the skin was just that: color. Unfortunately we don't live in that world, at least not in the United States. I'm sure whoever was behind the ad didn't have any hidden agenda or anything like that. I don't think Sony intended any racist implications, but damn...they should've known better.

No, although Buckley will probably add one soon, just to show the world he's not a racist, just a pedophile.
As much as you guys supposedly "hate" this webcomic, you sure do follow it pretty heavily. ;)
I for one don't think that this ad was racist. I wasn't offended. Call me an idealist, but I wish we could all get past the whole "racism" BS - all sides of it. I'm personally tired of getting shit just for being white. I'm also tired of hearing certain lesser-evolved individuals putting down someone just because he or she happens to be black, Asian, Arabian, etc. It's all BS and it should just fucking stop. Unfortunately it won't anytime soon.

I agree that was a FANTASTIC episode.
-K
Man, I don't know where you have these experiences. I know at my company what matters is your skill and knowledge. We evaluate all of our hires not by comparison to other candidates, but whether or not their right for the job (i.e. if they have 10 years experience, do they act and have the knowledge that someone working that long should). My company alone is a good enough argument against this "it's not merit" argument.
This argument also would negate the NEED for affirmative action, as if this was the case, people would always hire the person that was less wealthy. People from Yale would never get jobs.
This is NOT the case.

For everyone on Dark Iron, the comic was practically forced on us, Alliance couldn't move 10ft without getting a Rapscallion camping your body and yet teaming with them on Horde side was actually worse.
