BBC News Online are reporting (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5156938.stm) that in his monthly column inside UK gaming rag Edge, Jeff Minter had several less than glowing things to say about Sony and the PS3.
Mr Minter, writing in his regular column for Edge, said: "They seem absolutely certain that even when they say it's going to be considerably more expensive than existing consoles... nevertheless us eager customers will rush out in droves to buy it because it's, hey, a new PlayStation."
Mr Minter, who is famous for his 1980s games Llamatron and Gridrunner, said Sony was "incredibly arrogant".
Interesting. Can I just say I love Edge? They seem to be just about the most in depth magazine out there.

So a column repeating what people have been posting on boards for the last 3-6 months...great.

But we need our daily anti-PS3 news!
I mean, I agree with it all, but it became a dead horse awhile ago.

Jeff Minter is an industry legend, so I thought it was pretty interesting.

Good old Jeff... Please bring a llama game to Live Arcade!
The BBC has taken a fairly chilled out article that discussed the situation in fair terms and made it sound like some massive anti-Sony rant. It was a good 500 word article reduced to like 30 words of quote. Shit stirring of the worst sort.
Edge is credible, Minter is credible, BBC apparently is not.

Why is Jeff Minter and industry legend? I played Tempest 2000 a ton and I guess Llama's are cool but I wouldn't consider him a legend. So whats this guy done to become a legend that everyone quotes?

And how does arrogance effect the games? If this Minter guy is such a legend then why can't he explain how stupid PR leads to bad gameplay? If I remember, Sony has always acted the way they're acting now. That hasn't stopped them from putting out good-to-excellent first party games and attracting third parties to their console.
First of all, Edge is not a 'rag'.
There is no second.

don't you mean shitty-to-excellent? Sony has some good games, but they have also put out complete shit just to say they have a larger library of games.

I would love to read the full article. The annoying thing is that people are going to ignore your comment and continue with the banal "Minter sucks" or "Yeah he's right PS3 will suck" lines of thought.

Absolutely true. No other companies have shitty games. That's why I was so happy they the 360 had Barbie backwards compatible.
REPEAT, the article was fine the BBCs reporting of the article is not.

Lost, actually we'd love them. I wish I could find Edge locally. I'd buy it every month. I tried to subscribe online but the price for U.S. delivery was something like $140 a year.

EDGE is alone in the area of gaming journalism. Gamasutra is second. Everyone else is a distant third. If anyone thinks EDGE is rubbish, then they must also think ALL gaming magazines are rubbish as well.
I get mine every month at the local Borders Bookstore.

Bad news Mr. I'm A Funny Sarcastic Bastard, he was bashing first-party titles, and there are no first-party Barbie titles on any system. If you don't know what "first party" means I'm sure someone here would be more than happy to explain.

I once won an ebay auction for 100 or so EDGE back issuies. It cost me $300 to win that auction. I'm in the U.S. while the seller, of course, was in the UK. It would have cost me another $300 in shipping so I declined. I would love to have those back issues... :/ There seems to be no easy way for us to enjoy EDGE here in the U.S.

The only big book chain by me is a Books-A-Million, and they don't carry Edge, unfortunately, or I'd just pay the $7 a month or whatever for each issue in store, which, for some damn reason, is about half the price of the subscription, the exact opposite of how things are suppose to work. Subscribing to something should make it cheaper (or at the very least the same price) not double the price. And I probably would be willing to pay upwards of $60 or $70 dollars for an Edge subscription because it is at least worth 3 or 4 of the throw-away U.S. magazines I currently get. But $140? That's almost as much for a single issue as I pay for an entire year of any U.S. magazine.
EDIT: Hah shit I feel like an ass now. Wrong issue. Apologies.
Still, once I pick the new issue up I doubt Minter, a fairly chilled out guy will leap into hatred.

Minter is a damn legend and my mind was fairly warped at a very young age by his particular brand bestial gaming.

Yeah, I edited. Apologies again.

I couldn't disagree more. Do you care to show some examples of why you think Edge are a bunch of 'schmucks' or do you just suuport the PS3 so blindly that anyone that posts anything negative about it instantly becomes your enemy?
If that is the case, the only magazine you are reading now is OPM.

You could replace "Edge" and insert any videogame magazine Title instead and still say the same thing.

Have you read gamesTM (http://www.gamestm.co.uk/flashindex.html)? I prefer that to Edge as it's less pretentious. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Edge, but sometimes thy have a tendency to print 100 words when 10 would convey the same message.

Hah, or not. I read gamesTM. It's like Edge, minus the crap. And I while I look forward to the PS3, I am not a Sony 'fanboy'. Impartial has always been my style.

Edge is an industry magazine evaluating the corporate side of gaming in addition to the quality of its product. As such, it isnt the type of magazine to include game demos. In short, it really isn't for people solely interested in games - it is for people interested in the gaming industry. As far as I know, there isn't a better magazine out there although I welcome any suggestions!

I haven't read the article, or ever read Edge, but I did read this:
"In 2002, Jeff began work on a project for the Nintendo GameCube with the name of Unity — the combination of the two main threads of Jeff's work: light synthesis and classic arcade style shooting. Jeff was writing this game for Peter Molyneux's Lionhead Studios but the project was canceled in December 2004.
The version of the VLM to be used within Unity has since been reprogrammed and significantly expanded. Now named Neon, it has been used in the Xbox 360 media visualization."
from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Minter
So he's worked on the GameCube, he was probably paid a tidy sum by Microsoft for his code being used on the Xbox360, and he has done work with a company (Lionhead) now owned by Microsoft.... of course he's going to diss on the PS3! Duh!
That said, I pretty much agree with all the bad press the PS3 has gotten, and I won't be buying one, but lets just say this guy is not exactly impartial in his judgement.

That's a fair point. It does include much more on the idustry as whole, rather than just games. But, it seems to think it's better than other magazines. People rant and rave when Edge gives a 10/10, as if it's a sign from the gods. It says something that only requires a few sentences into a 2 page spread. It also seems to go by analysts predictions, rather than remain impartial at something.
Edge pales to TOTAL! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total%21).
They guided me in my formative years to become the well-rounded, discerning gamer I am today.

Actually he is. Jeff is a pretty laid back guy, just because he has been paid to do something he has always wanted to do (seriously, the guy has been making visualizers since the year dot) does not automatically make him a shill or a drone.
The guy goes with the hardware that does the job in the best possible fashion, he will program simply because he loves to program. If Jeff Minter says something like this, you can bet it's his opinion and not the opinion of anyone he is currently working for.

As I said, I'm not a Sony/PS3 fan, and I do love my 360, but what many are saying about EA becoming rampant with the anti-sony slant to all it's articles is becoming quite true. If this were some guy who programmed a PS3-exclusive game (or the PS3 screensaver!) saying bad things about the 360, or Wii, we'd all be saying how he was just a Sony shill, and throwing insults.
Look at this article - http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14520& and read the comments when the developer is a Sony fan instead of talking against it and our responses. Kinda funny.
Now, Minter may be an honest guy, not in anyones pocket, and frankly, I agree with him, but I bet if he was saying nice things about the PS3 we'd all be ripping him a new one and not praising his great games and how cool he is. Ya think?
So how about we stop putting up news articles every time someone says something bad about the PS3?
