If you can't find some fellow nerds to try out the pen and paper version, see if you can grab a copy of the megadrive RPG game. One of the best of that generation and really faithful to the material.

It used to be a good RPG game on the Megadrive?

Ok now I can see why people are pissed.

Uhh... it looks like Shadowrun to me.

And BTW, Shadowrun is primarily known for being a P&P game, not a console RPG. This is just a new piece of merchandise for the franchise.

Well, the looks are not like what I remember back from the P&P illustrations. But anyway that would just be subjective taste.

More important to me is why to create a shallow FPS game (and from all the information I read so far it will be a shallow quick-match game) when you have the whole Shadowrun license to use. Sure - new piece of merchandise, but such a pass up of a golden opportunity.

Shadowrun was great. Seriously, if you're not familiar go to any used bookstore and pick an old core up.

Trust me; if you've not familiar w/ Shadowrun, this is perversion 100%.

i'll agree with #2 above... it looks like fun... it will be neat to play with PC people too...

also, I never heard of shadowrun before this past E3, so I could care less what they did/didnt do to the original stuff...

Not sure what Shadowrun you played but this looks nothing like the one I play. Us Shadowrun fans got to make more noise about this game, we can't just let them tear apart such a rich universe to make it into a FPS/Counter-Strike clone. This is an outrage, especially when they have the power of the 360 at their fingertips and they turn around and make a game that looks like it could be on the XBOX or the PS2.

Big disappointment. This game will disappear in a month or two leaving minimal profits for the company publishing it, but destroying a franchise with the most potential to really be next-gen.

The Shadowrun franchise was really what a next-gen game should be.

If you go play the Genesis version you can see how much outrageous content there is and how much potential there is for a huge next-gen world.
Microsoft is just throwing money in the gutter with this move. Stupidity angers me.

I'm a person who had never heard of Shadowrun before this game, and I think the game looks like damn fun. From what I've seen so far, I plan on picking it up. I could see this being the 360's version of Halo 2 online - which I wasted countless hours on.

They raped the license into a bloody pulp of mediocrity.

For anyone who knew and loved Shadowrun, we would've hoped for a Deus Ex type of game in a wide environnement with multiple player characters tackling runs together on Live.

I mean, it would've been awesome to have a decker run to a port and jack in, while sammies protect him until he disables security counter-measures...

Why did it have to be an empty ugly Unreal Tournament ripoff in some god forsaken rocky level.

I wanted to tackle ARES and maybe steal a military prototype...

Now they could've made a multiplayer team-based FPS-style game out of Shadowrun that would have been faithful to the material, if...

1) You created a character offline, which was used online, with a detailed character creation system that allowed you to make all the various classes and races that exist in the P&P RPG game. No leveling up, so everyone starts at the same general skill/power-level, so your choices are what do you specialize in to help your team and what can you do.
2) The online play was very objective-based, and required more than just killing to achieve your team's goals. Using various skills to get past challenges and overcome the other team would be necessary. Imagine a scenario where one team must break into a corporate compound, hack into security to open doors, grab something that's otherwise locked up tight, and escape... while the other team must defend and maintain security in the compound.
3) It wasn't set in some weird Aztec Temple. Have hi-tech near-future urban environments, like dirty city streets and corporate offices, and so forth.

If they did all this, the game would appeal to fans of the setting and not have to be an RPG to do so. Right now? Meh, it looks like Unreal Tournament.

I agree that this is a horrific waste of the license. The world simply does not need another poor looking Unreal tournament clone.

IMO, this game *should* have been done as a content rich game like Oblivion except that it should have allowed for cooperative play for about 4-8 players. THAT could have done the franchise some justice.

Any old crappy franchise (or not franchise at all) could have been used to make the game shown here. This game looks unremarkable in almost EVERY way. I am not offended that they wanted to make an unreal tournament clone, but I AM offended that they think I will buy it if they put the word "Shadowrun" on the box... Shadowrun is a universe, like "X-Men" or "Star Wars". Games with that license should let people experience at least SOME of its uniqueness.

I think that MS realizes that this game is not living up to the hype though. They gave it a pretty muted place in their demonstration of new games at E3. It would not surprise me if they eventually canned it actually. Which is also a shame. Shadowrun should get made, it just should get made into a GOOD game.

When I hit them up at E3 about it they said that it was the 'early' Shadowrun universe, where magic had just returned to the world so some of the familier aspects of the Shadowrun universe might not be in there.

To which I wanted to punch the fucker in the face for ruining my beloved cyber-punk adventure. I think anyone who has played Shadowrun, hell... anyone who has even the slightest knowledge of Shadowrun knows what this game should have been. Free form, Deux-Ex RPG First Person shooter. And multiplayer should be more tactical, with emphsis on classes doing certain jobs. Also big ass co-op levels, runs that a group of people can go on, where the number of AI would be greater then the number of players on another team.

Since most people agree this is a WizKids sized fuckup of the universe I hope that, for what it is, its fun. If it is a casual first person class based shooter, rather then tactical like GRAW, and it doesn't suck like PDZ, then even with the shitty tack on of one of my favorite RPGs it would make a welcome addition to my game library. Then maybe, just maybe, FASA can get their head out their ass and do the real game without shitting it all up.

But yes, I agree that you're a troll.

I dunno, it's at least a renter.

If they have a fairly in-depth skill system as far as being able to pick your hax0r powers that make you jump (did some guy resurrect someone he just killed into a zombie in the video?), it might be enough to nudge it past the mediocre field.

Unfortunately it doesn't look as good as Halo 2. It doesn't even look as good as a top-of-the-line PS2 game. I mean was this written by teenagers?

Well, I never played the Shadowrun CRPG. I'm a big fan of the Shadowrun pnp RPG though. Their premise seems ok. Magic and shooting were a big part of the Shadowrun universe.

However, the environments I saw left me pretty flat. I saw a lot less of the variation and uniqueness that made the pnp game great. Everything was big huge platforms and easy to climb ramps. This is not the future. The characters, like the troll squad or the elf squad, seemed pretty generic to me. The mission screens (what little I saw) didn't look all that great either.

I'll have to reserve judgement, but I won't pick this up on release. I'll wait for the reviews and player opinions, then I'll decide. It might be a fun little shooter once the price drops.

I sure could use a good Shadowrun CRPG though. Or a good Shadowrun MMORPG. But the trolls have to be able to ride a Harley, or it's poop. ;)

#1. This game is a decent Live Arcade or Vista pack in. Fantasy FPS with decent controls and creative powers.
#2 Shadowrun is not present in this product. Except the name.
#3 The free fall gravity in this game is too low it feels floaty. They should increase it by 60% or more. And yes I know the difference between when the Shadowrun guy is using the wings and when he is free falling.

What percentage of the 360 owners have every played Shadowrun? I haven't. I'd guess it's a very small, but vocal percentage who have. And I'd say everyone of the 6,000+ Evil Avatar members who were Shadowrun fans have already posted on the Shadowrun threads about their disgust with the FPS choice for the franchise.

We could put up a poll. If it's 5% then reduce your potential market by 5%. Is it 10%, 20%? There will be 10m +/- Xbox 360's out by Xmas. How many Shadowrun players were there in the world? How many of those own 360's?

I'd say this game should rise or fall based upon how good a game it is... Now if the reviewers happen to be former Shadowrun players it will fail miserably. If they are like me and haven't a clue what the Pen and Paper Shadowrun universe is all about, then it's an FPS, Live Anywhere enabled with play against PC players and will be reviewed without prejudice.

The game sounds just fine to me. It might be horrible, but we'll see when it's out. The license has little effect on gameplay.

Personally, I think they used the Shadowrun franchise, because it is interesting and the combination of magic vs technology is an interesting idea for and FPS. They could have done it without Shadowrun, but they didn't.

My apologies to the Shadowrun fans, but it wasn't my call to use the license for an FPS and I'd say I'm probably part of a silent majority who will buy it if it's a good game.

At the risk of Sparky bustin' out his awesome Encyclopedia Brown, Kid Detective routine on me again, I'm going to stick with my positive comments.

From the videos I've watched, the game looks pretty fun. Is it the best graphically? Doesn't appear to be, but it still looks good. My only qualm would be the price point. If I'm not mistaken, there's no single player, just the online multiplayer stuff. I would have a hard time forking over $60 for that. At $40 or less? As it stands today, I would most likely buy it.

I really don't see the point of this game. Anyone who cares about the Shadowrun name and universe is pissed that MS has obviously missed the point completely. The FPS junkies would buy anything where you point and shoot at others online, so why not just make this game and give it another title? I personally get sick of seeing someone slap a beloved license on a mediocre or shitty product.

The 360 has enough FPS anyway - more than enough IMHO. What it needs are role playing games. HELLO MICROSOFT/FASA - GET A CLUE!

Ok, I gave up on Shadowrun anyway.
Actually, I gave up on any FASA product that WiZKids subverted into clicky form.

Personally, the game looks like fun.

The Genesis version was a blast to play...but did you really think they were going to create a top down version? I think the game will be fun from the videos. By the way, how awesome would a graphically updated, top-down, multiplayer Genesis style version on Live be?! Of course, it wont happen.

We will see how it plays when it releases.
